Effects of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) on the cochlear nucleus in cats deafened as neonates.

Many previous studies have shown significant neurotrophic effects of intracochlear delivery of BDNF in preventing degeneration of cochlear spiral ganglion (SG) neurons after deafness in rodents and our laboratory has shown similar results in developing cats deafened prior to hearing onset. This study examined the morphology of the cochlear nucleus (CN) in a group of neonatally deafened cats from a previous study in which infusion of BDNF elicited a significant improvement in survival of the SG neurons. Five cats were deafened by systemic injections of neomycin sulfate (60 mg/kg, SQ, SID) start…

Analysis of the thyroid phenotype in 42 patients with Pendred syndrome and nonsyndromic enlargement of the vestibular aqueduct.

BACKGROUND: Pendred syndrome (PS), a recessive disorder caused by mutations in the SLC26A4 (PDS) gene, is associated with deafness and goiter. SLC26A4 mutations have also been identified in patients exhibiting isolated sensorineural hearing loss without apparent thyroid abnormality (nonsyndromic enlargement of the vestibular aqueduct; nonsyndromic EVA). Our aim was to describe systematically the thyroidal phenotypes and the SLC26A4 genotypes of patients presenting with PS or nonsyndromic EVA. METHODS: Nineteen patients with PS and 23 patients with nonsyndromic EVA, aged 5-53 years, were inclu…

LEOPARD syndrome: clinical diagnosis in the first year of life.

LEOPARD syndrome (LS) is an autosomal dominant syndrome characterized by multiple lentigines and café-au-lait spots, electrocardiographic-conduction abnormalities, ocular hypertelorism/obstructive cardiomyopathy, pulmonary stenosis, abnormalities of the genitalia in males, retardation of growth, and deafness. LS shares many features with Noonan syndrome (NS), in which lentigines and deafness are usually not present. Molecular studies have shown that LS and NS are allelic disorders, caused by different missense mutations in PTPN11, a gene encoding the protein tyrosine phosphatase SHP-2 located …

A dual-stream deep learning framework for continuous sign language recognition to enhance communication accessibility in the Ha'il region.

Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) depends critically on hand gesture recognition, which also provides the basis of sign language communication for those with hearing problems. In automatic sign language identification systems, however, the contribution of non-manual elements like head posture and facial emotions has sometimes been disregarded. In order to fully capture the diversity of sign language modalities and to enhance the quality of life of deaf people in the region of Ha'il, we present in this study a dual-stream convolutional neural network (TS-CNN) that separately models hand motions

Further delineation of KIDAR syndrome: Two new cases with novel variants, functional analysis of the variants and a comprehensive review.

The syndrome known as KIDAR (keratitis, ichthyosis, deafness, autosomal recessive) is extremely rare. It is caused by biallelic mutations in AP1B1, encoding adaptor-related protein complex, beta-1 subunit. AP1 complex takes part in the formation of vesicles and the selection of cargo proteins in the trans-golgi network. It also contributes to vesicular transport of ATP7A and ATP7B. Accordingly, KIDAR has been defined as both an adaptinopathy and a copper metabolism disorder. Eleven cases have been reported to date. We report two new KIDAR cases with novel splice site variants-c.1796+1 G > T an…

Signatures of adaptive memory search: How early linguistic input shapes strategic use of lexical information.

Producing words during the semantic fluency task (e.g., "name all the animals you can in a minute") involves not only activating the relevant semantic representations but also being able to flexibly utilize phonological information to facilitate retrieval. However, the mechanisms by which individuals effectively use phonology as a latent cue during memory search remain understudied. In this study, we used a computational approach to examine the use of different lexical sources during memory search in two categorical domains (Animals and Foods) within the semantic fluency task. We captured the

Amplitude Compression for Preventing Rollover at Above-Conversational Speech Levels.

Hearing aids provide nonlinear amplification to improve speech audibility and loudness perception. While more audibility typically increases speech intelligibility at low levels, the same is not true for above-conversational levels, where decreases in intelligibility ("rollover") can occur. In a previous study, we found rollover in speech intelligibility measurements made in quiet for 35 out of 74 test ears with a hearing loss. Furthermore, we found rollover occurrence in quiet to be associated with poorer speech intelligibility in noise as measured with linear amplification. Here, we retested

Sensitivity of Methods for Diagnosing Noise-Induced Hearing Loss in Cases of Exposures Including Intense Low-Frequency Noise.

Exposure to intense low-frequency sounds, for example inside tanks and armoured vehicles, can lead to noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) with a variable audiometric pattern, including low- and mid-frequency hearing loss. It is not known how well existing methods for diagnosing NIHL apply in such cases. Here, the audiograms of 68 military personnel (mostly veterans) who had been exposed to intense low-frequency noise (together with other types of noise) and who had low-frequency hearing loss (defined as a pure-tone average loss at 0.25, 0.5 and 1 kHz ≥20 dB) were used to assess the sensitivity o

Cognitive potential of children and adolescents with CHARGE syndrome and deafblindness.

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to test the hypothesis stating that the cognitive potential of individuals with deafblindness is equal to those without a deafblind condition, an assumption that until now has been empirically unsubstantiated within the field of deafblindness. METHODS: To explore the assumption, 15 children and adolescents with CHARGE underwent cognitive assessment with WISC-V using a sequential two-level assessment design. The 1st level involved standardized test conditions. The 2nd level was designed as a continuation of the performances obtained from the 1st level and in

Anaesthetic management of an infant with MEGD(H)EL syndrome undergoing cochlear implant.

BACKGROUND: The syndrome has these features: 3-methylglutaconic aciduria (MEG), deafness(D), encephalopathy (E), Leigh-like syndrome (L). This disorder is caused by biallelic mutations in serine active site-containing protein 1 (SERAC1) gene. When these patients experience hepatopathy (H) in addition to the above manifestations, the syndrome is referred to as MEGD(H)EL. The pathology of this syndrome shares features with diverse types of inborn errors of metabolism. CASE PRESENTATION: We discussed the anaesthetic management of an infant 2-year-old suffering from MEGD(H)EL syndrome undergoing …
