INTRODUCTION: Spinal cord injury after manual manipulation of the cervical spine is rare and has never been described resulting from a patient performing a manual manipulation on their own cervical spine. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first well-documented case of this association.
CASE PRESENTATION: A healthy 29-year-old man developed Brown-Sequard syndrome immediately after performing a manipulation on his own cervical spine. Imaging showed large disc herniations at the levels of C4-C5 and C5-C6 with severe cord compression, so the patient underwent emergent surgical decompressi

Meningiomas are the most common intradural extramedullary tumors, followed by nerve sheath tumors that can also grow extradurally. Metastases are the most frequent extradural tumors and most commonly affect the thoracic vertebrae. Spinal fractures with column dislocation and/or instability require surgical fixation. Spine surgery for an extramedullary tumor or fracture usually involves decompression of neural elements and instrumentation for stabilization. These procedures risk spinal cord and nerve root injury. The incidence of nerve root deficits after resection of nerve sheath tumors is par

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous mechanical thrombectomy combined with catheter-directed thrombolysis is one of the most important methods for deep venous thrombosis treatment. Spontaneous spinal subdural hematoma is a remarkably rare complication in the thrombolysis process with catastrophic consequences, as shown in this case report.
METHODS: Percutaneous mechanical thrombectomy, percutaneous angioplasty, and catheter-directed thrombolysis were performed for the patient. Postoperatively, the patient was diagnosed with spontaneous spinal subdural hematoma and received a series of medical treatments

Compartment syndrome is a surgical emergency requiring immediate intervention. Majority of compartment syndromes are associated with trauma or surgery. Spontaneous compartment syndrome in multiple limbs is rare and alternative diagnosis should be sought. We report a young adult man who developed compartment syndrome in all four limbs sequentially over 4 years. On further evaluation, he was found to have a gene mutation in exon 3 of GYG1 gene. Spontaneous compartment syndrome in patients with GYG1 gene mutation does not appear to have been previously recognised. Although a direct causality cann

Widespread spinal metastases can obscure bone landmarks and severely hinder surgical safety during pedicle screw insertion. Robot-assisted spinal surgery has demonstrated an excellent safety profile for pedicle screw insertion. Moreover, spinal surgery robotic systems can facilitate pedicle screw insertion with high-accuracy. We present a patient who had breast cancer with widespread spinal metastases, pathological vertebral fracture, and spinal cord compression with a challenge of intraoperative image recognition. To overcome this problem, she received surgical decompression and stabilization

The goal of this study was to evaluate the outcome of our surgical approach aimed at preventing complications following surgery for De Quervain tendinopathy. Our stepwise surgical procedure is described in detail. We reviewed 56 cases operated by a senior surgeon over 5years, and re-evaluated them with a minimum 15months' follow-up. Complications mentioned in the literature (poor wound healing, adhesions, nerve injury, incomplete decompression, tendon subluxation) were not present in any of the cases; the satisfaction rate was very high. Slight residual discomfort was noted in 16 cases. Among

Facial pain is a rare and often misdiagnosed condition. The most common facial pain syndrome is trigeminal neuralgia (TG), which is characterized by paroxysms of excruciating, sharp, burning or lancinating pain. Most cases are caused by a vascular compression of the trigeminal nerve at its entry zone to the pons. Treatment strategies comprise medical treatment and surgical procedures. Anticonvulsants like carbamazepin or gabapentin are widely used for the treatment of TG. The decision on the individual drug therapy may depend on factors like pharmacokinetic properties and individual drug toler

PURPOSE: Surgical removal of orbital lymphangiomas is often difficult because the capsule of these lesions is fragile, and, once violated, it tends to collapse, making identification of residual tumor difficult and dissection often incomplete. A surgical technique combining partial controlled decompression of the lesion with intralesional injection of Tisseel fibrin glue is evaluated to determine its effectiveness in resecting the lesion and preventing recurrences.
METHODS: This is a retrospective interventional case series. Three young patients, two with lymphangiomas and one with congenital

A 69-year-old woman presented with acute type A aortic dissection complicated by extensive hemorrhagic cerebral infarction due to brain malperfusion. Emergency decompressive craniectomy was initially performed, with an initial diagnosis of hemorrhagic cerebral infarction. The patient was referred for surgical management following a diagnosis of acute type A aortic dissection. After stabilizing the neurological condition with medical treatment for nine weeks, hemiarch replacement was performed electively. The postoperative course was uneventful, with no new neurological disorders. Subsequently,

Traumatic cervical epidural hematoma is a rare disease in the pediatric population. It requires a high level of suspicion in children who presents with acute neurological deficit after trauma. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is required to confirm the diagnosis. Early surgical intervention is recommended to have the best neurological outcome. We report a case of a traumatic cervical epidural hematoma in a toddler with complete paraplegia, which partially recovered after decompressive surgery. We would like to emphasize the importance of high suspicion for this condition and the need for an ur

Spondylolisthesis is a common cause of lower back pain in people of all ages. When nonsurgical management is unsuccessful in treatment for lumbar spondylolisthesis, surgical treatment algorithms can be used. This article focuses on lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF). It represents a minimally invasive approach that affords surgeons an increased ability to restore disc height, indirectly decompress the neural elements, and affect global spinal alignment. As the role for circumferential minimally invasive spine surgery continues to expand, the use of LLIF in the setting of spondylolisthesis-

The glossopharyngeal neuralgia (GPN) constitutes approximately 0.2-1.3% of all facial pain syndromes. The GPN is a syndrome of neuropathic pain characterized by paroxysmal pain episodes localized in the posterior tongue, tonsil, throat, or external ear canal. The first-line treatment is pharmacological. Patients who are refractory to medical therapy can be treated surgically with microvascular decompression (MVD) or sectioning the IX nerve and the upper rootlets of the X nerve. We aim to describe the technical nuances of MVD of the IX cranial nerve with a targeted inferior mini-craniotomy in a

Congenital tracheobiliary or bronchobiliary fistula is a rare developmental anomaly with a persistent communication between the biliary system and the trachea or bronchus. We report a case of a congenital tracheobiliary fistula and hypoplastic common hepatic duct associated with hypoplastic left heart syndrome in a 5-day old boy presenting with bilious endotracheal-tube secretions. The tracheobiliary fistula was treated by surgical resection. Subsequent cholangiography demonstrated dilated intrahepatic bile ducts and a residual fistulous tract with cystic proximal stump that were successfully

A 4-year-old girl presented with retching and abdominal colic and was initially diagnosed with gastroenteritis. However, progressive pain and epigastric distension led to a surgical review and she was discovered on CT scanning to have a gastric volvulus. She required urgent laparotomy to decompress the stomach and repair a perforation on the lesser curvature. Her recovery was complicated by sepsis and reperforation necessitating further laparotomy, at which time she also underwent gastropexy. The patient required long-term jejunal feeding in the hospital and at home before finally returning to

U-shaped sacral fracture is a very rare injury. This injury is easily missed and the diagnosis is often delayed as it is difficult to detect on the anteroposterior view of the pelvic radiograph. It is highly unstable and neurological injury is common. Two cases of U-shaped sacral fractures are reported here in which the diagnosis was delayed resulting in the late development of cauda equina syndrome. In these two cases, full recoveries were achieved following surgical decompression. A high index of suspicion with proper clinical and radiographic assessments will decrease the incidence of misse

Fifty-two cases of inveterate cervical spine injury have been presented. Nearly all the injury types are represented. Neurological complications were present in sixty-nine percent of the cases. Specific surgical treatment aimed at restoration of anatomical relations within the spine, decompressing neural elements and stabilization of the injured segment. Good results have been achieved with neurological improvement, especially in the group of patients with paresis or root symptoms. Several paraplegic patients also benefited from the treatment. The authors conclude, that management employed off

Percutaneous rhizotomy, microvascular decompression or rhizotomy by suboccipital craniotomy often cures medically untreatable trigeminal neuralgia with an acceptable complication rate. However, pain involving the same trigeminal distribution persists in a few patients despite both rhizotomies. For 7 patients with such surgically 'Ошибка' trigeminal neuralgia, we performed descending trigeminal tractotomy. In all patients, neuralgia ceased immediately postoperatively and has not recurred during 9 months to 15 years follow-up. Descending trigeminal tractotomy provides a satisfactory solution to
