Hepatoprotective, Antioxidant, and Anti-Hyperlipidemic Effects of Kefir Milk in High-Fat Diet-Induced Obesity: Insights from Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry Profiling, Molecular Docking of Kefiran, and Liver Function Restoration.

The prevalence of chronic diseases, including obesity and related endocrine disorders, has risen significantly in recent decades. As a result, there has been growing interest in fermented foods with probiotic properties, such as kefir, which have potential health benefits. This study aimed to evaluate the hepatoprotective and antioxidant effects of kefir milk (KM) in a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity rat model, complemented by in silico molecular docking studies with antioxidant enzymes. Twenty-four adult rats were divided into four groups: control (1 mL/100 g bw semi-skimmed cow milk), KM

Interaction of B0AT1 Deficiency and Diet on Metabolic Function and Diabetes Incidence in Male Nonobese Diabetic Mice.

CONTEXT: The obesity epidemic parallels an increasing type 1 diabetes incidence, such that westernized diets, containing high fat, sugar, and/or protein, through inducing nutrient-induced islet β-cell stress, have been proposed as contributing factors. The broad-spectrum neutral amino acid transporter (B0AT1), encoded by Slc6a19, is the major neutral amino acids transporter in intestine and kidney. B0AT1 deficiency in C567Bl/6J mice causes aminoaciduria, lowers insulinemia, and improves glucose tolerance. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the effects of standard rodent chow (chow), high-fat high-suc

Low-Protein Diet Inhibits the Synovial Tissue Macrophage Pro-Inflammatory Polarization Via NRF2/SIRT3/SOD2/ROS Pathway in K/BxN Rheumatoid Arthritis Mice.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disorder characterized by pain, swelling, stiffness, and impaired function. Attenuating inflammation is a crucial objective in RA management. Diet and nutrition are believed to influence RA symptomatology, with a low-protein diet being one potential nutritional strategy, although its underlying mechanisms remain to be fully elucidated. In this research, serum derived from arthritic transgenic K/BxN mice was administered to naive mice to establish a K/BxN rheumatoid arthritis model. Physiological assessments and histological staining were perf

Postprandial plasma amino acid and metabolite kinetics of adult and growing pigs fed a diet with a balanced or unbalanced amino acid profile.

Feeding diets with an unbalanced amino acid (AA) profile can reduce the postprandial AA utilization for protein synthesis. Growing pigs use dietary AA mainly for protein accretion, whereas non-lactating and non-pregnant adult pigs use AA mainly for maintenance. The requirement for AA for growth is much larger than that for maintenance and growing pigs may therefore be more affected by a diet with an unbalanced AA profile than adult pigs. This study aimed to compare the postprandial plasma AA and metabolite concentrations of adult and growing pigs after feeding a diet with either an unbalanced

Apparent and standardised ileal amino acid digestibilities in heat-stressed pigs fed wheat-soybean meal diets supplemented with l-arginine and dl-methionine.

Heat stress (HS) exposure may damage the small intestine epithelia of pigs affecting the digestibility and absorption of amino acids (AA). Arg and Met can enhance antioxidant and intestinal cell proliferation activity, thus supplementing them in diets might alleviate epithelial damage and correct the reduced AA digestibility. The effect of adding extra l-Arg and dl-Met to diets on the apparent (AID) and standardised ileal digestibility (SID) of AA was analysed in a 10-day experiment conducted with 10 ileal-cannulated HS pigs (25.3 ± 2.4 kg body weight). The pigs were divided into two treatment

Protein-Energy Malnutrition Causes Deficits in Motor Function in Adult Male Rats.

BACKGROUND: Adult protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) often occurs in combination with neurological disorders affecting hand use and walking ability. The independent effects of PEM on motor function are not well characterized and may be obscured by these comorbidities. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to undertake a comprehensive evaluation of sensorimotor function with the onset and progression of PEM in an adult male rat model. METHODS: In Expt. 1 and Expt. 2, male Sprague-Dawley rats (14-15 wk old) were assigned ad libitum access for 4 wk to normal-protein (NP) or low-protein (LP) diets containing 1

Comparative effects of n-3, n-6 and n-9 unsaturated fatty acid-rich diet consumption on lupus nephritis, autoantibody production and CD4+ T cell-related gene responses in the autoimmune NZBWF1 mouse.

Mortality from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a prototypical autoimmune disease, correlates with the onset and severity of kidney glomerulonephritis. There are both preclinical and clinical evidence that SLE patients may benefit from consumption of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) found in fish oil, but the mechanisms remain unclear. Here we employed the NZBWF1 SLE mouse model to compare the effects of dietary lipids on the onset and severity of autoimmune glomerulonephritis after consuming: 1) n-3 PUFA-rich diet containing docosahexaenoic acid-enriched fish oil (DFO), 2) n-6 PUFA-r

Avocado consumption is associated with better diet quality and nutrient intake, and lower metabolic syndrome risk in US adults: results from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001-2008.

BACKGROUND: Avocados contain monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) dietary fiber, essential nutrients and phytochemicals. However, no epidemiologic data exist on their effects on diet quality, weight management and other metabolic disease risk factors. The objective of this research was to investigate the relationships between avocado consumption and overall diet quality, energy and nutrient intakes, physiological indicators of health, and risk of metabolic syndrome. METHODS: Avocado consumption and nutrition data were based on 24-hour dietary recalls collected by trained NHANES interviewers usi

Vitamin D deficiency induces high blood pressure and accelerates atherosclerosis in mice.

Multiple epidemiological studies link vitamin D deficiency to increased cardiovascular disease (CVD), but causality and possible mechanisms underlying these associations are not established. To clarify the role of vitamin D-deficiency in CVD in vivo, we generated mouse models of diet-induced vitamin D deficiency in two backgrounds (LDL receptor- and ApoE-null mice) that resemble humans with diet-induced hypertension and atherosclerosis. Mice were fed vitamin D-deficient or -sufficient chow for 6 weeks and then switched to high fat (HF) vitamin D-deficient or -sufficient diet for 8-10 weeks. Mi

B-vitamin status and concentrations of homocysteine in Austrian omnivores, vegetarians and vegans.

BACKGROUND: A vegetarian diet is considered to promote health and longevity and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and cancer. However, a vegetarian diet may be deficient in some nutrients. Exclusion of animal products in vegetarian diets may affect the status of certain B-vitamins, and further cause the rise of plasma homocysteine concentration. OBJECTIVE: The nutritional status of various B-vitamins (B(1), B(2), B(6), B(12), folic acid) and the concentration of homocysteine in blood plasma of omnivores (n = 40), vegetarians (n = 36) and vegans (n = 42) in Austria was evaluated. Dihydrosterculic acid induces hepatic PPARα target gene expression in mice.

Cottonseed oil (CSO) is a seed oil with a unique fatty acid composition and the ability to reduce lipid levels in humans and mice. The present study aimed to characterize the effects of dihydrosterculic acid (DHSA), a cyclopropyl fatty acid found in CSO, on lipid metabolism. First, male wild-type mice were fed CSO- or isocaloric oil-enriched diets (lacking DHSA) for 6 weeks. Tissues were analyzed via RNA-sequencing which identified 45 differentially expressed genes within the CSO group, the majority of which are associated with lipid metabolic processes. Despite being a moderate-fat diet, no c
