BACKGROUND: Pediatric lumbar spondylolysis, a stress fracture of the lumbar spine, frequently affects young athletes, and nonoperative treatment is often the first choice of management. Because the union rate in lumbar spondylolysis is lower than that in general fatigue fractures, identifying risk factors for nonunion is essential for optimizing treatment.
PURPOSE: To determine the risk factors for nonunion after nonoperative treatment of acute pediatric lumbar spondylolysis through multivariate analysis.
STUDY DESIGN: Case-control study; Level of evidence, 3.
METHODS: We analyzed 574 pedia

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric proximal humerus fractures (PHFx) are uncommon and makeup ~2% of all pediatric fractures. Traditionally, most cases are treated nonoperatively with closed reduction (CR) or immobilization with no reduction (INR) with excellent outcomes. Indications for CR without fixation remain unclear as immobilization in the position of reduction (shoulder abduction and external rotation) is not practical. We aim to determine the need for CR among adolescents with displaced PHFx treated nonoperatively.
METHODS: We conducted an IRB-approved prospective multicenter study involving 42 ado

In low-income countries (LIC), the management of bone infections is a huge challenge. A high number of patients are in the pediatric age group. Children and adolescents exhibit good bone healing potential offering treatment options that mainly rely on the biological response of the infected bone. The purpose of this article is to highlight treatment options for these patients in LIC, which is based on clinical cases that illustrate the principles of the treatment, focusing on bone reaction and healing potential. First, identification of emergency cases is of importance. Sepsis of the patient d

The single-bone forearm is a salvage technique for massive loss of bone due to serious trauma, malignant tumors, infections or congenital deformity. It is also described to treat the sequelae of hereditary multiple exostoses disease that affects the distal end of the ulna. We present the case of a 29-year-old patient, operated for sequelae of hereditary multiple exostoses disease of the left forearm by a modified single-bone forearm technique. The patient, right-handed, operated on twice in childhood for a hereditary multiple exostoses disease of the left forearm: incomplete excision of the ex

BACKGROUND: Deltoid ligament injury occurs often with supination-external rotation (SER) ankle trauma. SER fibula fractures with concomitant deltoid ligament injury are considered unstable-requiring operative fixation. Recent studies have questioned this general practice with emphasis on better defining the medial side ankle ligamentous injury. The function of the individual bands of the deltoid ligament, and the interplay between them, are not fully understood. We undertook this study to develop a better understanding of these complex ligamentous structures and ultimately aid assessment and t

Two case reports and an updated critical review on bilateral fractures of the femoral neck are presented. Bilateral fractures of the femoral neck have been investigated for at least 80 years and are treated as rare cases. The primary cause is usually considered an external shock; however, aside from high energy shocks (e.g., falling and impact with hard, rigid surfaces, traffic accidents, etc.) the underlying causes of femoral neck frailty have not yet been fully understood. Although not exhaustive, the review spans cases reported as early as 1944 and compares their conclusions in line with me

SIGNIFICANCE: Anterior eye shape measurements are important for clinical contact lens fitting. The detailed assessment of measurement repeatability using the Eye Surface Profiler (ESP; Eaglet Eye B.V., AP Houten, the Netherlands) allows for more reliable interpretation of eye surface topography measurements.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the repeatability of the ESP for anterior central corneal power and anterior eye surface height measurements.
METHODS: A Badal optometer was mounted on the ESP to provide an external fixation target with appropriate accommodation control and refract

INTRODUCTION: Giant cell tumor (GCT) is a rare, locally aggressive tumor of bone characterised by the presence of abundant giant cells. GCT has a tendency for recurrence, occurring in approximately a quarter of cases. GCT very rarely metastasize, with metastasis to lungs being reported in approximately 1% of GCTs.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 48 year -year-old gentleman noticed a swelling around his left wrist. Radiograph showed a lytic lesion in the distal radius having typical soap bubble appearance. He underwent left distal radius curettage and bone cement placement. The histopathological examinat

BACKGROUND: Shoulder arthroplasty incidence is increasing as is the volume of revision surgeries. Revision surgery is easier if humeral bone stock is preserved with minimal bone defects and osteolysis. This has led to an increased focus on the development of various short stemmed and stemless implants which provides stable fixation whilst preserving humeral bone stock.
PURPOSE: To review the medium to long term clinical and radiological outcomes, complications and survival rates of a stemless reverse shoulder prosthesis.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: Patients with a minimum follow-up of 60 months fol

STUDY DESIGN: Clinical case series.
OBJECTIVE: To assess objective outcomes of surgical correction of post-external beam radiation therapy (ERBT) kyphosis in a series of five adults.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: EBRT is a well-established treatment for many cancers in children and adults. One complication associated with EBRT is postirradiation spine deformity. Scoliosis is the most common deformity, but kyphosis also occurs frequently. Differences in deformity patterns are likely related to the location and intensity of radiation. To our knowledge, no studies have addressed treatment of thes

INTRODUCTION: Suitable handheld dynamometer (HHD)-techniques to test hip abduction strength in individuals with a lower extremity amputation, irrespective of their amputation level are absent. The aim of this study was to optimise a HHD-technique and to test its reproducibility and validity.
METHODS: This study involved three phases, in which two techniques were evaluated. Both HHD-techniques used a lever-arm of 22 centimetre. HHD-technique 1 used a break-technique. After obtaining within-session test-retest reproducibility (phase 1) we optimised the HHD-technique by adding a fixation-belt an

INTRODUCTION: The management of highly comminuted distal radius fractures still remains a major treatment challenge. Articular comminution and compromised bone quality are the culprits. One novel approach is the technique of Internal Distraction Plating which involves "bridging" the fracture with the use of a standard 3.5mm plate applied dorsally in distraction from the radius, proximal to the fracture, to the long finger metacarpal distally, bypassing the comminuted segment. The plate is removed once fracture union has been achieved.
AIM: The present study was conducted with the aim to evalu
