Experimental Study on Hydrogen-Induced Crack Propagation of X80 Steel Under Alternating Pressure Fluctuations.

When hydrogen is transported in a pipeline, the fatigue loading in the pipeline will enhance hydrogen accumulation and diffusion, thus increasing the risk of hydrogen-induced fracture. In this study, specimens are subjected to cyclic loading within an autoclave, where hydrogen gas pressure is varied to examine its impact on fatigue crack growth. The influence of hydrogen pressure and stress variations on the fatigue crack growth rate is investigated. The findings show that as hydrogen pressure increases, the crack growth rate also rises, and at 3 MPa hydrogen pressure the rate is elevated by o…

Influence of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation and Exercise on Physical Capacity and Gait in Multiple Sclerosis: A Cross-Over Pilot Study.

Physical capacity provides a link between disease or impairment and limitations in activity; in multiple sclerosis (MS), it is limited and decreased. The aim of this study was to study the effects of exercise and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex area in MS patients with fatigue and an impaired gait ability. A cross-over design was carried out on fifteen patients with two disability associations, but three were excluded. Before and after each intervention, the 6 min walk test (6MWT) and the 2 min walk test (2MWT) were used to assess walki…

Microscopic Ophthalmic Surgery Using a Freely Movable Arm Support Robot: Basic Experiment and Clinical Experience.

INTRODUCTION: The disadvantage of conventional armrests is the difficulty to adjust their height and position during surgery. OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether a freely movable armrest (FMA) that follows the surgeon's arm is useful for reducing surgeon fatigue and arm tremors and for improving surgical accuracy. METHODS: In the basic study, a corneal suture was placed in porcine eyes with FMA (FMA group) or without FMA (non-FMA group). The suture was intended to pass through two points. Tremor was quantified using motion-tracking software when the needle was held. Subjective symptoms of ar…

Measuring the Impact of Tinnitus on Aided Listening Effort Using Pupillary Response.

Tinnitus can have serious impact on a person's life and is a common auditory symptom that is especially comorbid with hearing loss. This study investigated processing effort required for speech recognition in a group of hearing-impaired people with tinnitus and a control group (CG) of hearing-impaired people without tinnitus by means of pupillary response. Furthermore, the relationship between the pupillary response, self-rating measures of tinnitus severity, and fatigue was examined. Participants performed a speech-in-noise task with a competing four-talker babble at two speech intelligibilit…

Movement timing and reach to reach variability during a repetitive reaching task in persons with chronic neck/shoulder pain and healthy subjects.

Neck/shoulder pain is linked to movement repetition, awkward postures, and muscular fatigue. Studies have examined the influence of pain and fatigue on movement characteristics, but few report spatial and temporal characteristics within- and between-dynamic movements. The combined influences of fatigue and pain on these parameters are examined here. A shoulder-injured group (PAIN) (intensity >3/10, duration >3 consecutive months) and an age-sex-matched control group (CTRL) (n = 16 in each) performed a repetitive reaching task to voluntary termination. Kinematics, heart rate, and muscle activit…

Abnormal vibration-induced illusion of movement in idiopathic focal dystonia: an endophenotypic marker?

The frequency of symptomatic dystonia in relatives of patients with idiopathic focal dystonia (IFD) is higher than expected from epidemiologic studies implying that genetic factors may be involved. Perception of the vibration-induced illusion of movement (VIIM) is subnormal in patients with IFD compared with healthy volunteers and the abnormality corrects with volitional fatigue of the vibrated arm. The aim of the study was to establish the heritability of the abnormality of VIIM. The perception of illusion of movement elicited by vibration of the biceps brachii tendon before and after fatigue…

Transcutaneous PCO2 monitoring in the evaluation of hyperventilation of patients with recurrent nerve paralysis.

Hyperventilation during phonation is one of the causes of fatigue in patients with vocal cord disorders. Transcutaneous (TC) PCO2 and PO2 were analyzed during phonation in patients with known recurrent nerve paralyses (RNP). There was no significant change in TCPCO2 in eight normal subjects. In cases with unilateral RNP and incomplete glottic closure, TCPCO2 decreased during phonation. This decrease in TCPCO2 resulted from hyperventilation during phonation. The TCPCO2 did not decrease in one case with RNP and complete glottic closure. In one case with incomplete glottic closure, the decrease i…

Effects of a Passive Back-Support Exosuit on Objective and Subjective Measures of Human Performance During a Simulated Bush-Crop Harvesting Task.

OBJECTIVE: Interest in wearable passive back-supports (exoskeletons/suits) has grown rapidly as a tool to reduce the risk of low back injury by reducing lumbar extensor muscle loading. Previous studies have shown the effectiveness of passive back-support exoskeleton/suit at reducing low back muscle activity/fatigue in a variety of tasks, but it is unclear whether an exoskeleton/exosuit intervention would be effective in agricultural harvesting tasks that require complex three-dimensional dynamic motions, long duration stooped postures, and variable engagement of the lower extremities. The obje…

Muscle Shear Moduli Changes and Frequency of Alternate Muscle Activity of Plantar Flexor Synergists Induced by Prolonged Low-Level Contraction.

During prolonged low-level contractions, synergist muscles are activated in an alternating pattern of activity and silence called as alternate muscle activity. Resting muscle stiffness is considered to increase due to muscle fatigue. Thus, we investigated whether the difference in the extent of fatigue of each plantar flexor synergist corresponded to the difference in the frequency of alternate muscle activity between the synergists using muscle shear modulus as an index of muscle stiffness. Nineteen young men voluntarily participated in this study. The shear moduli of the resting medial and l…

Somatic symptom disorders without known physical causes: one disease with many names?

Patients complaining of pain or fatigue in the absence of known physical diseases constitute a high percentage of those seeking general medical care. Depending upon the type of physician/specialist consulted, those individuals may receive disease labels that range from an implied psychological origin such as somatoform or psychosomatic disease, or to a presumed physical disease such as fibromyalgia. Although all these conditions are regularly associated with fatigue, we have provided a new label suggesting another disease category, "systemic exertion intolerance disease," which replaces the pr…

Does a subgroup of postpolio patients need different management?

Throughout the 30 years of postpolio syndrome (PPS) research, there have been many puzzling anomalies in the data and not enough information to make sense of them. It is therefore welcome that Winberg et al have examined physical activity in relation to life satisfaction, sex and age. They hypothesized that activity would decrease with age and found the opposite. This result is not so surprising as Ostlund et al found that vitality was associated with older age and that younger age was associated with more pain, increasing physical fatigue, decreasing sleep quality and reducing activity. This …

An explorative cross-sectional study on the association between immunological biomarkers in patients with chronic pain.

BACKGROUND: Studies indicate an association between pain perception and inflammatory response. However, the expression of inflammatory cytokines in the regulation of the interaction between pain and other coexisting symptoms related to pain, such as fatigue, remains largely unknown. AIM: This study utilizes a comprehensive screening method for inflammatory biomarkers to objectively study their relation to fatigue and other patient reported outcomes, such as depression and sleep disturbances, in a cohort entailing patients with chronic pain and controls reporting no pain. MATERIAL AND METHODS…

Effects of Upper Trapezius Myofascial Trigger Points on Scapular Kinematics and Muscle Activation in Overhead Athletes.

Prolonged overactivity of the upper trapezius muscle with myofascial trigger points might cause muscle fatigue and subsequently change scapular kinematics and associated muscular activities. Scapular kinematics and associated muscular activities were investigated in 17 overhead athletes with upper trapezius myofascial trigger points and 17 controls before and after a fatigue task. Participants performed a fatigue task requiring sustained isometric scapular elevation. The outcomes included scapular kinematics (upward/downward rotation, external/internal rotation, posterior/anterior tilt) that w…

Clinical characterization of dysautonomia in long COVID-19 patients.

Increasing numbers of COVID-19 patients, continue to experience symptoms months after recovering from mild cases of COVID-19. Amongst these symptoms, several are related to neurological manifestations, including fatigue, anosmia, hypogeusia, headaches and hypoxia. However, the involvement of the autonomic nervous system, expressed by a dysautonomia, which can aggregate all these neurological symptoms has not been prominently reported. Here, we hypothesize that dysautonomia, could occur in secondary COVID-19 infection, also referred to as "long COVID" infection. 39 participants were included fr…

Ocular symptoms associated with digital device use in contact lens and non-contact lens groups.

PURPOSE: Previous reports indicate that "eye fatigue" occurs in roughly 60 % of the adult population using digital devices and may negatively impact quality of life. However, the construct of eye fatigue remains poorly understood. The goal of this study was to quantify the relationship among symptoms most frequently associated with eye fatigue in those using digital devices. METHODS: Six hundred and two soft contact lens (SCL) wearers and 127 non-contact lens (non-CL) wearers who reported using digital devices at least 4 hours per day completed a questionnaire assessing the frequency and seve…
