Environmental pollutants can result in a variant of acne called 'chloracne'. Chloracne is caused by systemic exposure to certain halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons 'chloracnegens', and is considered to be one of the most sensitive indicators of systemic poisoning by these compounds. Dioxin is the most potent environmental chloracnegen. Most cases of chloracne have resulted from occupational and non-occupational exposures, non-occupational chloracne mainly resulted from contaminated industrial wastes and contaminated food products. Non-inflammatory comedones and straw-colored cysts are the prima

Enteroviruses belong to the Picornaviridae family and are the smallest, nonenveloped viruses known to infect both humans and animals. The spread of enteroviral infections is mainly by the faecal-oral and oral-oral route, but also through direct contact with secretions from ophthalmic and dermal lesions. Water, food and soil contaminated by infected faeces are an exogenous infection source which creates many opportunities for the transfer of the infection, and cause an epidemic outbreak in a short period of time. Enteroviruses are being isolated from all types of water: ground, sea, sewage and

Cyanide or metal cyanide contaminations have become serious environmental and food-health problems. A fungal mutant of Trichoderma koningii, TkA8, constructed by restriction enzyme-mediated integration, has been verified to have a high cyanide degradation ability in our previous study. In this study, the mutant cells were entrapped in sodium-alginate (Na-alginate) immobilization beads to degrade cyanide and ferrocyanide in a liquid mineral medium. The results showed that the fungus in immobilization beads consisting of 3% Na-alginate and 3% CaCl2 could degrade cyanide more efficiently than a n

Between 1085 and 1927, epidemics of "convulsive ergotism" were widespread east of the Rhine in Europe due to consumption of grain contaminated with ergot, which is produced by the fungus Claviceps purpurea. West of the Rhine, consumption of ergot-contaminated food caused epidemics of gangrenous ergotism. The clinical features of convulsive ergotism--muscle twitching and spasms, changes in mental state, hallucinations, sweating, and fever lasting for several weeks--suggest serotonergic overstimulation of the CNS (ie, the serotonin syndrome). The ergot alkaloids are serotonin agonists. Dihydroer

The increase of listeriosis outbreaks in recent years has mainly been due to the consumption of contaminated dairy products. This prompted a revision of prevention and control measures. Cheese and other foods (meat, poultry meat) were investigated. For isolation, samples were prepared and investigated according to the recommendations of the FDA with some modifications including, in particular, sub-enrichment. Suspicious colonies were tested biochemically followed by serological identification with factor sera. Out of 100 chicken (95 broilers, 5 layers) Listeria monocytogenes was isolated from

Tapeworms of the genus Echinococcus cause parasitic disease in humans through the ingestion of eggs in contaminated food and water. Rupture of slowly enlarging cysts in the liver, lungs, and other organs can be life-threatening and many deaths are recorded yearly worldwide. Surgery and removal of such cysts remain the most effective treatment. Veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) routinely placed in the ICU in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), may provide time and adequate oxygenation for the completion of surgery in echinococcosis cases. In this artic

Cystic echinococcosis is a zoonotic infection that occurs worldwide. Humans are infected through ingestion of parasite eggs in contaminated food, water or through direct contact with infected dogs, which are the definite host. Humans serve accidentally as intermediate host, and occurrences are common in children and young adults. Cystic echinococcosis is endemic in Mediterranean, South American, Middle Eastern, Central Asia, East Africa countries and Australia. The liver is the most frequently involved organ, followed by lungs. Hydatid cysts have been reported only in 2% of cases in the brain.

Listeria is commonly found in processed and prepared foods and listeriosis is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Preventative measures are well prescribed and monitoring and voluntary recall of contaminated products has resulted in a 44% reduction in the prevalence of perinatal listeriosis in the USA. Pregnant women are at high risk for listeriosis, but symptoms are non-specific and diagnosis is difficult. The intracellular life-cycle of Listeria protects the bacterium from host innate and adaptive immune responses. Antibiotic treatment requires agents able to penetrate, distribute,

An unusual type of food poisoning, mad-honey intoxication, can be observed in the Black Sea region of Turkey and various other parts of the world. It can occur after ingestion of grayanotoxin-contaminated honey produced from the nectar of Rhododendron ponticum and other plant species, chiefly of the Ericaceae and Sapindaceae families. Mad-honey intoxication can result in severe cardiac complications, such as complete atrioventricular block. The diagnosis is generally reached on the basis of the patient's history of honey intake. In this report, we describe the case of a patient who had mad-hon

Cysticercosis is the most common parasitic disease of the nervous system. The disease occurs when humans become the intermediate host in the life cycle of Taenia solium by ingesting its eggs from contaminated food. The most common sites of involvement of cysticerci are soft tissue, eye and central nervous system. Unusual location of the cysts may result in uncommon manifestations. Ocular cysticercosis can involve both the intraocular and extra ocular muscle. Extra ocular muscle cysticercosis is rare. We are reporting the unusual manifestation of ptosis, proptosis, diminution of vision and medi

The case reported here concerns an alcoholic pork-butcher who presented with severe colitis with peritonitis, caused by the only ciliate protozoan capable of infecting humans, Balantidium coli. This parasite is common in a variety of domestic and wild mammals, mainly pigs; however, its prevalence rate in humans is very low--particularly in industrialised, northern countries, including France. The infection is most frequently acquired by ingesting food or water contaminated by pig faeces, and it may be asymptomatic or may cause acute diarrhoea. Specific antibiotic treatment is efficacious, and

In the United States, Norwalk-like viruses (NLVs) cause an estimated 23 million episodes of illness, 50,000 hospitalizations, and 300 deaths each year. NLVs can be transmitted by fecally contaminated food and water and by direct person-to-person contact or through droplets of infected persons. Outbreaks of NLV-associated gastrointestinal illness are common in military settings. During May 13-19, 2002, a total of 29 British soldiers and staff of a field hospital in Afghanistan became acutely ill after a short incubation period with vomiting, diarrhea, and fever. This report summarizes the inves

INTRODUCTION: Distomatosis is a parasite infection following ingestion of food contaminated by Fasciola hépatica, the tropism of which is essentially hepatic. The mechanism of this exceptional complication is discussed in two cases of pneumothorax.
OBSERVATIONS: Two 35 and 60 year-old patients presenting spontaneous pneumothorax during distomatosis, the first revealing the disease, the second suggesting the evolution of a severe form of the disease. The surgical biopsy in the first patient revealed a granulomatous pleuro-pneumopathy rich in giant cells.
DISCUSSION: Pulmonary manifestations o

The production of plastics is steadily increasing and raises major environmental and public health concerns. Those used every day, including in the medical sector, lead to the formation of microplastics (MP). These can then contaminate water, air, soil and our food. Through inhalation or ingestion, MP can enter the bloodstream and reach various organs. The presence of MP has also been demonstrated in the kidneys and urine. In vitro and animal studies suggest potential nephrotoxicity of MP. Patients with kidney diseases may be at increased risk due to higher exposure through medical procedures

Enteric fever is a multisystem febrile illness caused by Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serovar Typhi, Paratyphi A, B and C. It is usually transmitted through contaminated food and water. The disease usually manifests as a febrile illness with bacteraemia after the initial entry through the gastrointestinal tract. However, extraintestinal seeding of this pathogen can occur in rare instances. Here, we report a case of chocolate cysts of the ovaries which was infected with Salmonella Paratyphi A in a sexually active woman with a previous history of enteric fever that was neglected. We r

Listeriosis is a foodborne infection in humans caused by Listeria monocytogenes. Consumption of contaminated food can lead to severe infection in vulnerable patients, that can be fatal. Clinical manifestations include sepsis and meningitis, and in pregnancy-associated infection, miscarriage and stillbirth. Diagnosis is confirmed by culture and identification of the pathogen from blood, cerebrospinal fluid, vaginal swab, placenta or amniotic fluid. Treatment regimens recommend amoxicillin, ampicillin or an aminoglycoside. Virulence factors mediate bacterial adhesion and invasion of gut epitheli

Cryptosporidiosis is an infectious disease caused by the Cryptosporidium parasite, primarily affecting the gastrointestinal tract of both humans and animals. Transmission occurs via fecal-oral route, mainly through ingestion of water or food contaminated with oocysts, the parasite's infectious form. Immunocompromised individuals are particularly susceptible to severe and prolonged symptoms. Current treatment strategies involve supportive measures and antiparasitic medications such as nitazoxanide and paromomycin, although patients with predisposing factors have an elevated risk of recurrence.

Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato, a dog tapeworm is a species complex causing cystic echinococcosis or hydatid disease in a great variety of mammalian intermediate hosts, including humans. This complex comprises five species including Echinococcus ortleppi (G5 genotype or cattle strain). In the present paper, we report the first case of infection with the larval stage of latter cestode in a captive crested porcupine (Hystrix cristata), molecularly confirmed by PCR and sequencing of the cox1 and nad1 genes. The food contaminated with the parasite's eggs is the most likely source of the infect

Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune enteropathy triggered by gluten. Gluten-free diets can be challenging because of their restrictive nature, inadvertent cross-contaminations, and the high cost of gluten-free food. Novel nondietary therapies are at the preclinical stage, clinical trial phase, or have already been developed for other indications and are now being applied to CD. These therapies include enzymatic gluten degradation, binding and sequestration of gluten, restoration of epithelial tight junction barrier function, inhibition of tissue transglutaminase-mediated potentiation of gliad

Scombroid poisoning is a common cause of food poisoning worldwide. It is caused by ingestion of oily fish contaminated with bacteria that trigger the formation of high concentrations of histamine. Scombroid poisoning manifests mainly as a skin complaint (flushing that spreads downward and/or an erythematous urticarial rash affecting the face and upper trunk). Although the clinical course is usually self-limiting and benign, vascular compromise, bronchospasm, and arrhythmias have been described. It is important to establish a differential diagnosis that includes conditions such as fish allergy.
