Mirror movements and callosal dysgenesis in a family with a DCC mutation: Neuropsychological and neuroimaging outcomes.

Corpus callosum dysgenesis is a congenital abnormality whereby the corpus callosum fails to develop normally, and has been associated with a range of neuropsychological outcomes. One specific finding in some individuals with corpus callosum dysgenesis is "congenital mirror movement disorder", which is the presence of involuntary movements on one side of the body that mimic voluntary movements of the other side. Mirror movements have also been associated with mutations in the deleted in colorectal carcinoma (DCC) gene. The current study aims to comprehensively document the neuropsychological ou

The application of cerebellar repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on aphasia after stroke: A randomized controlled trial protocol.

OBJECTIVES: Non-invasive brain stimulation has emerged as a safe, pain-free, and cost-effective method for post-stroke aphasia (PSA) rehabilitation. However, the ideal site for stimulation is yet to be determined. The cerebellum has demonstrated its role in language function though the application of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) targeting the cerebellum for PSA has not been well-documented. This study aims to assess the short- and long-term efficacy of rTMS on the right cerebellum in enhancing language recovery in patients with PSA in the subacute phase, and to explore i

Blood-brain barrier biomarkers modulate the associations of peripheral immunity with Alzheimer's disease.

The association between peripheral immunity and Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been increasingly recognized, but the underlying mechanisms are still unclear. We used multiple linear regression models to explore the association between peripheral immune biomarkers / blood-brain barrier (BBB)-related biomarkers and AD biomarkers. And we used causal mediation analysis with 10,000 bootstrapped iterations to investigate the functions of BBB-related biomarkers in mediating the associations between peripheral immune biomarkers and AD pathology, cerebral atrophy degree, as well as cognitive function. A

Individualised mapping of living human brain mitochondria by MRI reveals signatures of bioenergetic defects.

Mitochondria power brain function and cognition, yet no label-free, non-invasive method has existed to explore their relationship to ageing, disease, and cognition in humans. The MitoBrainMap framework predicts mitochondrial features from magnetic resonance data alone, potentially bridging cellular biology with macroscale brain organization. Here we tested whether it captures meaningful age- and disease-related variation across individuals. MR-predicted mitochondrial density and tissue respiratory capacity declined with age, whereas intrinsic mitochondrial respiratory capacity was relatively p

Glymphatic clearance as revealed by diffusion tensor imaging along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) is associated with Alzheimer's disease neuropathology and periodic rsEEG alpha rhythms in mild cognitive impairment participants.

INTRODUCTION: We evaluated whether the brain glymphatic drainage function estimated by the diffusion tensor imaging along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) index relates to white matter (WM) integrity, Alzheimer's disease (AD) neuropathology, resting-state electroencephalogram (rsEEG) alpha rhythms underpinning quiet vigilance, and cognitive decline in mild cognitive impairment (MCI). METHODS: Clinical, neuroimaging, and rsEEG data were analyzed in matched mild cognitive impairment due to AD (ADMCI) and MCI not due to AD (noADMCI) participants. DTI-ALPS index and aperiodic and periodic compon

Intracranial calcifications in DEGS1-Related Leukodystrophy: a potentially under-recognised neuroimaging feature.

Pathogenic variants in DEGS1, encoding a sphingolipid desaturase critical for ceramide biosynthesis, disrupt sphingolipid homeostasis and oligodendrocyte function, leading to abnormal myelination. We report an infant with genetically confirmed DEGS1-related leukodystrophy (homozygous c.337A > C, p.Asn113His) who presented with abnormal eye movements and early-onset developmental arrest. This was accompanied by axial hypotonia, severe feeding difficulties, and refractory epilepsy, including epileptic spasms with modified hypsarrhythmia. Brain MRI demonstrated diffuse abnormal myelination per ag

Genome-wide association study of delay discounting identifies 11 loci and reveals transdiagnostic associations across mental and physical health.

Delay discounting (DD), a person's preference for smaller immediate rewards over larger delayed rewards, is a heritable trait that is associated with psychiatric and physical outcomes, yet the biological mechanisms underlying these links are not known. We performed a GWAS of DD using 134,935 23andMe research participants and identified 11 genome-wide significant loci. We did not replicate our previously reported association with rs6528024 (chrXq13.3, GPM6B; P = 5.30 × 10-02). The SNP-heritability of DD was 9.85 ± 0.57%. We observed genetic correlations between DD and 73 behavioral, physical, a

Glioblastoma and new-onset criminal behaviors in a geriatric patient: a forensic-psychiatric case report from Switzerland.

Organic brain disorders (OBD), including rapid-growth cancerous tumors, can have significant neuropsychiatric effects and in some circumstances have led to the manifestation of deviant behaviors that conflict with societal norms. This report describes the case of a geriatric male patient in Switzerland with no prior history of delinquency who in later life repeatedly committed stalking offences and aggressive acts. An initial forensic-psychiatric evaluation diagnosed this individual with persistent delusional disorder based on pronounced symptoms and rigid personality traits; during this asses

White matter differences between younger and older adults revealed by fixel-based analysis.

The process of healthy aging involves complex alterations in neural structures, with white matter (WM) changes significantly impacting cognitive and motor functions. Conventional methods such as diffusion tensor imaging provide valuable insights, but their limitations in capturing complex WM geometry advocate for more advanced approaches. In this study involving 120 healthy volunteers, we investigated whole-brain WM differences between young and old individuals using a novel technique called fixel-based analysis (FBA). This approach revealed that older adults exhibited reduced FBA-derived metr

P-Wave Duration Is Associated With Aging Patterns in Structural Brain Networks.

BACKGROUND: Impaired cardiac function is associated with cognitive impairment and brain imaging features of aging. Cardiac arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation, are implicated in clinical and subclinical brain injuries. Even in the absence of a clinical diagnosis, subclinical or prodromal substrates of arrhythmias, including an abnormally long or short P-wave duration (PWD), a measure associated with atrial abnormalities, have been associated with stroke and cognitive decline. However, the extent to which PWD has subclinical influences on overall aging patterns of the brain is not clearl

Macroscopic changes in aquaporin-4 underlie blast traumatic brain injury-related impairment in glymphatic function.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) has emerged as a potential risk factor for the development of neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Blast mTBI, caused by exposure to a pressure wave from an explosion, is predominantly experienced by military personnel and has increased in prevalence and severity in recent decades. Yet the underlying pathology of blast mTBI is largely unknown. We examined the expression and localization of AQP4 in human post-mortem frontal cortex and observed distinct laminar differences in AQP4 expression following bl

The Genetics of Primary Familial Brain Calcification: A Literature Review.

Primary familial brain calcification (PFBC), also known as Fahr's disease, is a rare inherited disorder characterized by bilateral calcification in the basal ganglia according to neuroimaging. Other brain regions, such as the thalamus, cerebellum, and subcortical white matter, can also be affected. Among the diverse clinical phenotypes, the most common manifestations are movement disorders, cognitive deficits, and psychiatric disturbances. Although patients with PFBC always exhibit brain calcification, nearly one-third of cases remain clinically asymptomatic. Due to advances in the genetics of

Genetic patterning for child psychopathology is distinct from that for adults and implicates fetal cerebellar development.

Childhood psychiatric symptoms are often diffuse but can coalesce into discrete mental illnesses during late adolescence. We leveraged polygenic scores (PGSs) to parse genomic risk for childhood symptoms and to uncover related neurodevelopmental mechanisms with transcriptomic and neuroimaging data. In independent samples (Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development, Generation R) a narrow cross-disorder neurodevelopmental PGS, reflecting risk for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, depression and Tourette syndrome, predicted psychiatric symptoms through early adolescence with greater

Executive functions and personality traits of juvenile myoclonic epilepsy patients: a single-center experience of 23 cases.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME), which is a fairly common form of generalized epilepsy syndrome has attracted attention by providing focal findings in some electrophysiological, neuropsychological, and neuroimaging studies. These findings are considered to be based on frontal lobe dysfunction. Furthermore, it is known that Cluster B personality disorders that are related to impulsive behavior are frequently seen in JME patients. METHODS: In this study, 23 JME patients and 20 healthy control subjects were included. All subjects were assessed using neuropsychological tests for exe

Deconstructing the functional neuroanatomy of the choroid plexus: an ontogenetic perspective for studying neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders.

The choroid plexus (CP) is a delicate and highly vascularized structure in the brain comprised of a dense network of fenestrated capillary loops that help in the synthesis, secretion and circulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). This unique neuroanatomical structure is comprised of arachnoid villi stemming from frond-like surface projections-that protrude into the lumen of the four cerebral ventricles-providing a key source of nutrients to the brain parenchyma in addition to serving as a 'sink' for central nervous system metabolic waste. In fact, the functions of the CP are often described as
