Fall-related injuries in nursing homes for the aged are frequent and cost-intensive. Their iatrogenic causes are well known and avoided in modern geriatric institutions. We examined all falls in an institution during the period of 19 months. Patients who carry out daily tasks on a semi-independent level were most at risk. The main risk-factor was dementia. This study assesses the morale and its salient predictors among Korean immigrant elderly living alone or with a spouse only. Face-to-face interviews with 131 Korean immigrant elderly reveal relatively low morale, as measured by the modified Philadelphia Geriatric Center Morale Scale. Geriatric research clinicians were readily trained to use three scales initially developed for rating neuroleptic-induced movement disorders in mixed-age patients: the Abnormal Involuntary Movements Scale (AIMS), Simpson Extra Pyramidal Side Effect Scale (SEPSE), and Barnes Akathisia Scale (BAS). Geriatric wards using individualized care (nursing process) were compared with task allocation wards in three hospitals. Patient dependency was measured using the CAPE scales.
