Orthodontic and orthopaedic treatment for anterior open bite in children.

BACKGROUND: Anterior open bite occurs when there is a lack of vertical overlap of the upper and lower incisors. The aetiology is multifactorial including: oral habits, unfavourable growth patterns, enlarged lymphatic tissue with mouth breathing. Several treatments have been proposed to correct this malocclusion, but interventions are not supported by strong scientific evidence. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate orthodontic and orthopaedic treatments to correct anterior open bite in children. SEARCH METHODS: The following databases were searched: the Cochrane Oral

Development and Testing of a Mobile App for Management of Gestational Diabetes in Nepal: Protocol for a User-Centered Design Study and Exploratory Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is increasing, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) like Nepal. GDM self-management, including intensive dietary and lifestyle modifications and blood glucose monitoring, is critical to maintain glycemic control and prevent adverse outcomes. However, in resource-limited settings, several barriers hinder optimal self-management. Mobile health (mHealth) technology holds promise as a strategy to augment GDM treatment by promoting healthy behaviors and supporting self-management, but this approach has not yet bee

A Mobile Health Intervention for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (Families Moving Forward Connect): Development and Qualitative Evaluation of Design and Functionalities.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) affect approximately 2% to 5% of the US population. However, most families are unable to access FASD-informed interventions. Barriers to care include the lack of a knowledgeable and skilled workforce and family-level barriers such as limited financial resources, inability to access childcare, and stigma. As a result, families often try peer-to-peer and self-help support strategies. However, they often take these strategies from disparate sources, which have quite variable intervention quality and empirical support. OBJECTIVE: This study aime

Dog rabies control in West and Central Africa: A review.

Rabies is a neglected but preventable zoonotic disease that predominantly affects the most vulnerable populations living in remote rural areas of resource-limited countries. To date, every country on the African mainland is considered endemic for dog-mediated rabies with an estimated 21'500 human rabies deaths occurring each year. In 2018, the United Against Rabies collaboration launched the Global Strategic Plan to end human deaths from dog-mediated rabies by 2030. The epidemiology of rabies from most Western and Central African countries remains poorly defined, making it difficult to assess

[Multiple Myeloma - Current Status in Diagnostic Testing and Therapy].

Background Multiple myeloma is a haematological blood cancer of the bone marrow and is classified by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a plasma cell neoplasm. In multiple myeloma, normal plasma cells transform into malignant myeloma cells and produce large quantities of an abnormal immunoglobulin called monoclonal protein or M protein. This ultimately causes multiple myeloma symptoms such as bone damage or kidney problems. The annual worldwide incidence of multiple myeloma is estimated to be 6 - 7/100,000 and accounts for 1% of all cancer. In Germany, there are about 6,000 cases of newly

Optimising gravimetric method interpretation using population-specific blood densities among Indonesian pregnant women: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) depends heavily on accurate and timely blood loss assessment, yet no gold standard assessment method is available. Gravimetric methods are recommended for low-resource settings, but they require an accurate blood density value for interpretation. Currently, there are no data on the blood density of pregnant or labour women. OBJECTIVE: This study measured the blood density of Indonesian pregnant women to improve the reliability of the gravimetric results in estimating postpartum blood loss. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was condu

Immediate oral versus immediate topical versus delayed oral antibiotics for children with acute otitis media with discharge: the REST three-arm non-inferiority electronic platform-supported RCT.

BACKGROUND: Acute otitis media is a painful infection of the middle ear that is commonly seen in children. In some children, the eardrum spontaneously bursts, discharging visible pus (otorrhoea) into the outer ear. OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical effectiveness of immediate topical antibiotics or delayed oral antibiotics with the clinical effectiveness of immediate oral antibiotics in reducing symptom duration in children presenting to primary care with acute otitis media with discharge and the economic impact of the alternative strategies. DESIGN: This was a pragmatic, three-arm, individu

A game-based intervention for adolescent pregnancy prevention: Protocol for a multi-site randomized controlled trial evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Existing adolescent pregnancy prevention programs have demonstrated modest effects. Evaluation is needed for interventions aimed at improving intermediary outcomes linked to behaviors associated with adolescent pregnancy prevention, including intentions, communication skills, decision-making skills, access to information, and supportive adult relationships. These intermediary outcomes often serve as mechanisms that decrease sexual behaviors associated with unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection risk and enhance understanding of how interventions influence behavior.

Nursing care of a child with cerebral palsy and multidrug-resistant bacterial pneumonia treated with bacteriophage therapy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Children with cerebral palsy (CP) are at high risk of pulmonary infection with multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) owing to recurrent infections, prolonged hospitalization, and repeated antibiotic exposure. Bacteriophage (phage) therapy has emerged as a promising alternative for infections refractory to conventional antibiotics; however, its application in children with CP complicated by multidrug-resistant pneumonia has rarely been reported, and corresponding nursing experience remains scarce. CASE PRESENTATION: This report describes the nursing care of a 2-year-and-4-month-old

Clinical profiles, referral patterns and low vision aid prescribing across four rehabilitation centres in Ghana: protocol for a multicentre retrospective record review.

BACKGROUND: Low vision, defined as best-corrected visual acuity of less than 6/18 in the better eye or a visual field constriction of 20° or less, is a condition in which residual vision may be optimized through optical and non-optical aids. Despite the importance of low vision services in maximizing residual vision and supporting rehabilitation and quality of life, evidence on patient profiles and service delivery in Ghana remains limited. The HM KNUST Low Vision Project aims to address this service gap through a multicentre retrospective medical record review across four centres, characteriz

Clinical Correlations Between Diagnostic Assessment Methods and Functional Outcomes in Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders are major contributors to pain, disability, reduced participation, and health-care utilisation. Structural and digital diagnostic tools can characterise pathology, but their ability to explain functional limitations and rehabilitation prognosis is often incomplete. This narrative review aimed to synthesise representative evidence on the relationship between diagnostic and screening methods and functional outcomes in musculoskeletal rehabilitation, with emphasis on clinical interpretation and practical use in care pathways. METHODS: Peer-reviewed literatur

Balancing Trade-Offs in Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement in Rapid Evaluation: Reflections and Lessons.

BACKGROUND: Patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) is recognised as essential to high-quality health and care research. However, there is limited guidance on how to sustain meaningful involvement in rapid evaluations characterised by compressed timelines and shifting priorities. OBJECTIVE: To reflect on how PPIE developed within the NIHR Rapid Service Evaluation Team (RSET) and to identify practical lessons for navigating tensions between influence, feasibility, and equity in time-pressured contexts. METHODS: This practice-based critical reflection draws on internal documentati

Overview of findings from the UK and Ireland National Advanced Heart Failure Audit 2024.

BACKGROUND: Approximately one million individuals live with heart failure in the UK, and clinicians diagnose around 200 000 new cases each year. Although lifesaving treatments such as heart transplantation (HTx) and left ventricular assist device (LVAD) therapy exist, healthcare providers perform only about 325 of these procedures annually across the UK and Ireland. This gap suggests that many eligible patients do not receive appropriate referrals for HTx or LVAD. AIMS: The Transplant Cardiology Working Group conducted the inaugural UK and Ireland National Advanced Heart Failure Audit Report

Microplastic-associated gut microbial profile and antibiotic resistance in preschool children: a multicentre cross-sectional study in China.

BACKGROUND: Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous in ecosystems and present in the human body, causing a worldwide environmental issue. However, the extent of human exposure to MPs remains largely unknown. Although mice exposed to MPs exhibit gut microbiota dysbiosis, the impact of MPs on the human intestinal microbiota remains unclear. Furthermore, MPs can carry and spread antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, their potential influence on ARG abundance is underexplored. METHODS: A multicentre cross-sectional study was conducted in Xiamen, Shanghai, and Nanjing in China from October 2022
