Immune History Modifies Disease Severity to HPAI H5N1 Clade 2.3.4.4b Viral Challenge.

The most recent outbreak of highly pathogenic avian H5 influenza (HPAI) virus in cattle is now widespread across the U.S. with spillover events happening to other mammals, including humans. Several human cases have been reported with clinical signs ranging from conjunctivitis to respiratory illness. However, most of those infected report mild to moderate symptoms, while previously reported HPAI H5Nx infections in humans have had mortality rates upwards of 50%. We recently reported that mice with pre-existing immunity to A/Puerto Rico/08/1934 H1N1 virus were protected from lethal challenge from

History of dental caries in Inuit populations: genetic implications and 'distance effect'.

Dental caries is considered the third most important scourge in the world. In North America, Inuit populations are the population the most severely affected by dental caries. It is often assumed that this situation can be explained by a combination of factors classical for Indigenous populations: remoteness (geographical distance), low economic status and low health literacy (cultural distance). Using a bibliographic approach, we tested this hypothesis of the "distance effect" by exploring the caries prevalence in other Indigenous populations living in high-income countries. Next, we tested wh

A Deep Learning Framework for Anesthesia Depth Prediction from Drug Infusion History.

In the target-controlled infusion (TCI) of propofol and remifentanil intravenous anesthesia, accurate prediction of the depth of anesthesia (DOA) is very challenging. Patients with different physiological characteristics have inconsistent pharmacodynamic responses during different stages of anesthesia. For example, in TCI, older adults transition smoothly from the induction period to the maintenance period, while younger adults are more prone to anesthetic awareness, resulting in different DOA data distributions among patients. To address these problems, a deep learning framework that incorpor

From contact lens to 'Dream Lens' - Cultural History of Vision Correction Technology.

This paper traces how medical technologies to correct vision were introduced and changed in Korean society until the introduction of Orthokeratology called 'Dream Lens' in the late 1990s. First of all, I outlines the historical background of the introduction and spread of the relatively unfamiliar and expensive Orthokeratology, which is said to "cure" myopia and astigmatism by pressing the cornea. 'Dream Lens', a 'lens for correcting corneal refractive error', was a popular vision correction technology in terms of its name, treatment method, and effect. Not only was it introduced with a name s

Diagnosing Functional Neurological Disorder through History and Physical Examination: A Case Report.

Differentiating between stroke and stroke mimics (i.e., non-vascular conditions) is a major challenge, as they often involve similar presenting symptoms. A common type of stroke mimic is functional neurological disorder (FND), a somatic disorder caused by severe stress, emotional conflict, or a psychiatric disorder usually presenting with one or more neurologic symptoms. This condition is associated with voluntary motor and sensory symptoms that are internally inconsistent with identifiable neurological diseases and lack structural lesions. We describe a 54-year-old female with a history of tr…

Natural history and surgical outcome of incidentally discovered clinically nonfunctioning pituitary macroadenomas.

OBJECTIVES: The incidental diagnosis of nonfunctioning pituitary macroadenomas (NFPMAs) is becoming more prevalent with the spread of modern brain imaging techniques. We sought to uncover new data about their natural history and surgical outcome. DESIGN: This is a retrospective single-center observational study. METHODS: Among 210 patients seen for a NFPMA between 2010 and 2019, 70 (33%) were discovered incidentally (i-NFPMA). We analyzed outcomes in a total of 65 patients with available follow-up data. RESULTS: Mean age at diagnosis (± s.d.) was 60 ± 14 years and mean maximal diameter was …

Delay discounting and family history of psychopathology in children ages 9-11.

Delay discounting is a tendency to devalue delayed rewards compared to immediate rewards. Evidence suggests that steeper delay discounting is associated with psychiatric disorders across diagnostic categories, but it is unclear whether steeper delay discounting is a risk factor for these disorders. We examined whether children at higher risk for psychiatric disorders, based on family history, would demonstrate steeper delay discounting behavior using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, a nationally representative sample of 11,878 children. We looked at associatio…

Genotype-Phenotype Correlations in TMPRSS3 (DFNB10/DFNB8) with Emphasis on Natural History.

BACKGROUND: Mutations in TMPRSS3 are an important cause of autosomal recessive non-syndromic hearing loss. The hearing loss associated with mutations in TMPRSS3 is characterized by phenotypic heterogeneity, ranging from mild to profound hearing loss, and is generally progressive. Clinical presentation and natural history of TMPRSS3 mutations vary significantly based on the location and type of mutation in the gene. Understanding these genotype-phenotype relationships and associated natural disease histories is necessary for the successful development and application of gene-based therapies and…

Cerebrospinal fluid proteomics define the natural history of autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology develops many years before the onset of cognitive symptoms. Two pathological processes-aggregation of the amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide into plaques and the microtubule protein tau into neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs)-are hallmarks of the disease. However, other pathological brain processes are thought to be key disease mediators of Aβ plaque and NFT pathology. How these additional pathologies evolve over the course of the disease is currently unknown. Here we show that proteomic measurements in autosomal dominant AD cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) linked to brain protein

Relationship between Serum Selenium Level and Self-Reported History of Kidney Stone.

A relationship may exist between selenium and kidney calculi, but there is a lack of research in this field at present. Our study explored the relationship between the serum selenium level and a medical history of adult kidney calculi. We utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted between 2011 and 2016. Participants self-reported their history of kidney stones, while serum selenium levels were measured using inductively coupled plasma dynamic reaction cell mass spectrometry. Our findings indicate a negative correlation between serum selenium levels and th…

History of primary-series and booster vaccination and protection against Omicron reinfection.

Laboratory evidence suggests a possibility of immune imprinting for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. We investigated the differences in the incidence of SARS-CoV-2 reinfection in a cohort of persons who had a primary Omicron infection, but different vaccination histories using matched, national, retrospective, cohort studies. Adjusted hazard ratio for reinfection incidence, factoring adjustment for differences in testing rate, was 0.43 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.39 to 0.49] comparing history of two-dose vaccination to no vaccination, 1.47 (95% CI: 1…

Migraine: A Review on Its History, Global Epidemiology, Risk Factors, and Comorbidities.

Migraine affects more than one billion individuals each year across the world, and is one of the most common neurologic disorders, with a high prevalence and morbidity, especially among young adults and females. Migraine is associated with a wide range of comorbidities, which range from stress and sleep disturbances to suicide. The complex and largely unclear mechanisms of migraine development have resulted in the proposal of various social and biological risk factors, such as hormonal imbalances, genetic and epigenetic influences, as well as cardiovascular, neurological, and autoimmune diseas
