This experiment tested the hypothesis that opioid antagonists could influence the timing of the onset and progress of parturition in the pig. Primiparous pigs (gilts) received a jugular catheter on Days 104 to 106 of pregnancy. At 1400 h on Day 112 the gilts received 10 mg PGF2alpha, i.m. to induce parturition. At 1000 h on Day 113 (i.e., 20 h later) gilts received either saline (n=6), 1 mg/kg, i.v. naltrexone (n=4) or 1 mg/kg, i.v. naloxone (n=5). Blood samples were taken daily from Days 108 to 116. Leiomyomatosis peritonealis disseminata (LPD), a multifocal proliferation of smooth muscle like cells, has so far been described in 48 cases. Most of them were pregnant women or women taking the oral contraceptives, which supported the hypothesis that LPD is associated with hyperestrogenism. We report a 65-year-old women, without history of taking exogenous estrogens, which suggests that factors other than hormonal influences may contribute to pathogenesis of LPD.

A 36-yr-old woman was referred to the endocrine clinic for investigation of oligomenorrhea, hirsutism, and acne. She was plethoric and overweight with central fat distribution. Adrenal insufficiency following unilateral radical nephrectomy has not been previously described in medical literature. We present a 78-year-old male patient who experienced a difficult postoperative course with vague findings, and was ultimately diagnosed with acute adrenal insufficiency. Treatment with glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids resulted in prompt control of the disease.

We measured the cortisol response to the 5-HT precursor, 5-hydroxytryptophan, (5-HTP) in seven patients with major depression before and after 8 weeks treatment with the tricyclic antidepressant, clomipramine. The cortisol response to 5-HTP was significantly increased following clomipramine treatment, suggesting that clomipramine, like selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs), enhances this 5-HT2 receptor mediated response. Studied children with mild to moderate juvenile rheumatoid arthritis who were massaged by their parents 15 minutes a day for 30 days (and a control group engaged in relaxation therapy). The children's anxiety and stress hormone (cortisol) levels were immediately decreased by the massage, and over the 30-day period their pain decreased on self-reports, parent reports, and their physician's assessment of pain (both the incidence and severity) and pain-limiting activities.

Three experiments examined how norms characteristic of a "culture of honor" manifest themselves in the cognitions, emotions, behaviors, and physiological reactions of southern White males. Rifampicin(R) is a potent enzyme inducer which is now widely used to treat many conditions. We have investigated its effect on adrenal function tests in 18 adults with tuberculosis on rifampicin (R) and isoniazid (INH) as in-patients. Midnight cortisol was above 250 nmol/l in 11 patients with a mean +/- (SD) of 340 +/- 193 nmol/l. The morning serum cortisol following 1 and 4 mg dexamethasone overnight was abnormal in 88.9 per cent and 83.3 per cent respectively.
