A patient with a long history of celiac sprue developed a pleomorphic intestinal lymphoma. Cell suspensions of tumor cells and immunoperoxidase labeling of cell surface antigens in frozen tissue sections clearly showed the lymphoma to be of T-cell origin, despite the presence of other nontumor cells bearing enzyme markers of histiocytes. These findings may have important implications on the cellular origin of lymphomas developing in patients with celiac sprue.

A retrospective study was made of 20 horses with severe and extensive chronic disease of the small intestine. Many of the animals had clinical evidence of malabsorption, with progressive loss of weight, hypoalbuminaemia and sometimes anaemia. All but two of the horses were Thoroughbreds. The pathology was diverse. A study of mast cell content of the small intestinal mucosa in children with celiac disease is presented. Twenty patients with true celiac disease were studied and compared with 7 patients with transient gluten intolerance and 20 normal control patients. In healthy children we found (mean +/- SE) 142.5 +/- 16.4 mast cells/mm2. In children with active celiac disease, only 40.1 +/- 19.5 cells were found. Mesenteric lymphoblasts have a predilection to localize selectively in the murine small intestine within 24 hr after adoptive transfer. In this report, we quantify the localization and intraintestinal distribution of radiolabelled mesenteric lymph node (MLN) T and B blasts in relation to the in situ distribution of intestinal T and B cells which were detected immunohistochemically. The clinical and urodynamic results of enterocystoplasty were compared in 3 groups of patients in which the intact ileocecal segment (10 patients), tubular sigmoid segment (16) or sigmoid cup-patch segment (8) was used. This study was initiated to determine if raised (carcinoid) plasma concentrations of substance P induced jejunal secretion of water and electrolytes. Five dogs had isolated and cannulated 25 cm jejunal segments perfused at 2 ml/min with a neutral, isotonic perfusate. Four patients with total aganglionosis of the intestine had renal abnormalities. Two patients had cortical subcapsular cysts, one had unilateral renal agenesis and one other had unilateral renal dysplasia. Six parasitic helminths detected were Ancylostoma sp., Opisthorchis felineus, Toxocara mystrax, Hepaticola hepatica, Taenia sp. and Hydatigera taeniaeformis. A young woman with acute myelocytic leukemia developed acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding immediately after a first remission induction of her leukemia.
