Since many end stage renal disease (ESRD) patients experi inflammation, malnutrition, and anemia, the interplay of these processes should be considered in the approach to patients treated with erythropoietin (EPO). This article reviews the interrelationship between these factors. Cortical sinovenous thrombosis in a child with nephrotic syndrome and iron deficiency anaemia is described. The most probable mechanism for the hypercoagulable state was thrombocytosis associated with iron deficiency anaemia. The other possible contributing factor might have been the diuretic therapy during the phase of relapse.

OBJECTIVE: This study was aimed at determining the diagnostic value of conventional laboratory tests regarding the iron status and serum transferrin receptor in hospitalized patients.
METHODS: Patients who had to undergo bone marrow aspirate examination were included in this 8-month prospective study. Iron deficiency was defined as the absence of stainable iron on bone marrow examination. Patients with stainable iron were included in the control group. Diets high in fermentable carbohydrates are known to be highly cariogenic, particularly when contained in very sticky food such as dates. This medium allows food to remain in contact with the teeth, thereby resisting the normal flushing action of the saliva.
