The effect of vitamin A deficiency on iron status was investigated in rats. After 28 d of feeding either low or high vitamin A diets (0 vs 4000 IU of vitamin A per kg feed), the final body weight was slightly but significantly lowered by the low vitamin A diet. Plasma retinol concentrations were decreased in rats fed diets low in vitamin A. Marginal vitamin A deficiency produced slightly, but significantly lower blood hemoglobin concentrations; it did not clearly affect hematocrit. The concentration of iron in liver was significantly higher when diets low in vitamin A were fed while significan

Background and Clinical Significance: Scurvy, caused by chronic vitamin C deficiency, is re-emerging in Western countries, particularly among pediatric patients with highly selective diets. While its musculoskeletal and mucocutaneous manifestations are well-known, its association with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is rare and poorly understood. Ascorbic acid and iron are essential cofactors for prolyl hydroxylases (PHD), which regulate Hypoxia-Inducible Factors. Their combined deficiency may trigger a "pseudohypoxic" state, leading to pulmonary vascular remodeling and vasoconstriction.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative anaemia is a risk factor for adverse postoperative outcomes after cardiac surgery. Iron deficiency is a frequent cause of low preoperative haemoglobin. An effective treatment for preoperative anaemia associated with iron deficiency has not been determined.
METHODS: We conducted a single-centre, open-label, pragmatic randomised trial, enrolling 156 elective cardiac surgery patients who had low preoperative haemoglobin (100-130 g L-1) with iron deficiency (serum ferritin <100 μg L-1 or transferrin saturation <30%) to compare intravenous ferric derisomaltose 1000 mg and

Using a case-control design, we determined risk factors associated with hypertension in a disadvantaged rural population in southern India. Three hundred adults with hypertension and 300 age- and sex-matched controls were extensively phenotyped. Underweight (29%, body mass index < 18.0 kg m-2), chronic kidney disease (25%, estimated glomerular filtration rate <60 ml min-1 1.73 m-2) and anemia (82%) were highly prevalent. The ratio of sodium to potassium excretion was high (8.2). In multivariable conditional logistic regression of continuous variables dichotomized by their median value, hyperte

Iron deficiency and cardiac sympathetic impairment play a role in the worsening of heart failure, and these two conditions may be linked. The present study aimed to clarify the relationship between myocardial iron deficiency, cardiac sympathetic activity, and major adverse cardiac events (MACE) in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Cardiac T2* MRI for iron deficiency and (123)I-Metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) imaging for cardiac sympathetic activity were performed in 46 patients with DCM. Myocardial T2* value (M-T2*) was calculated by fitting signal intensity data for mid-left ventricu

Previous short-term supplementation studies showed no additional hematologic benefit of multiple micronutrients (MMN) compared with iron + folic acid (IFA) in adolescent girls. This study examines whether long-term once- or twice-weekly supplementation of MMN can improve hemoglobin (Hb) and micronutrient status more than twice-weekly IFA supplementation in anemic adolescent girls in Bangladesh. Anemic girls (n = 324) aged 11-17 y attending rural schools were given once- or twice-weekly MMN or twice-weekly IFA, containing 60 mg iron/dose in both supplements, for 52 wk in a randomized double-bli

As a quantitative test of iron storage the six-hour urinary excretion of iron was measured after the intravenous infusion of the iron-chelating agent diethylenetriamine penta-acetic acid (D.T.P.A.). The value of this test in determining the presence and magnitude of the total body iron stores was assessed in patients with diseases of iron storage. In patients with idiopathic haemochromatosis and in their first-degree relatives with increased iron stores as measured by hepatic biopsy, the result of the D.T.P.A. test fell progressively as iron stores were reduced by venesection therapy. There wa

In a trial with 18 sows of the German landrace in three groups the dietary copper supply was varied in gravidity and lactation. Iron, copper, zinc, nickel and manganese concentration of milk was measured on 11 different days during the five weeks' lactation period in response to alimentary copper supply. Copper supply did not influence iron, zinc, and manganese concentration even if it was deficient during gravidity and lactation. Mature sow's milk contained 1.2 micrograms Fe, 1.5 micrograms Cu, 6-8 micrograms Zn, 0.16-0.23 microgram Ni and 0.07-0.13 microgram Mn per g fresh milk. First colost

Hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is a genetic disorder characterised by epistaxis, mucocutaneous telangiectasias and arteriovenous malformations. Iron deficiency due to chronic bleeding events is a common manifestation that produces a range of nonspecific symptoms. We report on a patient with HHT with longstanding fatigue and exercise intolerance, which was persistently attributed to iron deficiency, who was revealed to have glycogen storage disease type V, an autosomal recessive metabolic myopathy caused by deficiency of myophosphorylase due to PYGM variants. Genetic testing revea

Anemia is the most common hematologic complication of pregnancy and is associated with increased rates of premature birth, low birth weight and perinatal mortality. Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anemia, and most pregnant women benefit from daily supplementation of 30 to 60 mg of elemental iron. Folic acid deficiency, the most common cause of megaloblastic anemia in pregnancy, is associated with open neural tube defects and other complications. It is recommended that daily supplementation with 4 mg of folic acid be started at least one month before conception and continued through

Two physicochemically and metabolically separate pools of ferritin, namely cytosolic ferritin and lipid-associated ferritin, are present in the livers of guinea pigs. In this paper we establish that the iron content of cytosolic ferritin is dependent on and linearly related to ascorbic acid concentration, whereas changes in concentration of this vitamin do not affect the iron content of lipid-associated ferritin. In livers of ascorbic acid-deficient guinea pigs both synthesis and degradation of cytosolic ferritin are diminished equally. Consequently cytosolic ferritin is metabolized more slowl

BACKGROUND: The serum transferrin receptor (TfR) presents certain advantages over other parameters of cellular iron status because it does not vary in acute or chronic diseases.
OBJECTIVE: To establish reference ranges of TfR in healthy children for our laboratory, to define the distribution of this variable in children with acute illness and in those with iron deficiency, and to evaluate the diagnostic yield of TfR, the transferrin-receptor/ferritin ratio (TfR/F) and the transferrin-receptor-ferritin index (TfR-F) in distinguishing ferropenic from infectious anemia.

After a young female patient received an intravenous iron infusion for severe symptomatic iron-deficiency-anemia, a severe hypophosphatemia was diagnosed with associated mild muscle weakness. With renal phosphate loss and elevated serum FGF23 (Fibroblast Growth Factor 23), the diagnosis of a hypophosphatemia caused by ferric carboxymaltose was made. Upregulation of FGF23 inhibits renal phosphate reabsorption and also the activation of vitamin D, which additionally reduces intestinal phosphate absorption. The symptoms of hypophosphatemia may be masked after iron replacement.

Hereditary hyperferritinemia-cataract syndrome (HHCS) is a rare genetic condition characterized by persistent hyperferritinemia (usually ferritin >1,000 ng/mL) without tissue iron overload, with or without early-onset slow-progressing bilateral nuclear cataract. It was first identified as a new genetic disorder in 1995, and since then genetic sequencing studies have been carried out to identify associated mutations in affected families. New mutations around the world are still being reported in the iron-responsive element (IRE) of the L-ferritin gene (FTL) to this day. Many clinicians remain u

BACKGROUND: Young adults form the majority of first-time blood donors to Australian Red Cross Lifeblood. However, these donors pose unique challenges for donor safety. Young blood donors, who are still undergoing neurological and physical development, have been found to have lower iron stores, and have higher risks of iron deficiency anaemia when compared to older adults and non-donors. Identifying young donors with higher iron stores may improve donor health and experience, increase donor retention, and reduce the burden on product donation. In addition, these measures could be used to indivi
