Sialodacryoadenitis virus (SDAV) is known to be an etiological agent, causing infections in laboratory rats. Until now, its role has only been considered in studies on respiratory and salivary gland infections. The scant literature data, consisting mainly of papers from the last century, do not sufficiently address the topic of SDAV infections. The ongoing pandemic has demonstrated, once again, the role of the Coronaviridae family as extremely dangerous etiological agents of human zoonoses. The ability of coronaviruses to cross the species barrier and change to hosts commonly found in close pr

Intrauterine infections are an urgent problem of modern neonatology. One of the causes of intrauterine infective foetal lesions is physiological immunosuppression. The purpose of this study is to investigate the cytokine status in newborns infected with perinatal infections, depending on their body weight. The study examined 145 newborns. Taking into account their body weight, they were divided into 2 groups: main and secondary. The study was conducted in the immunological laboratory of the Medical Centre of Marat Ospanov West Kazakhstan Medical University in the city of Aktobe, with the deter

Orbital and preseptal cellulitis are most commonly caused by organisms that originate in the upper respiratory tract or from the skin. There is significant variation in antibiotics used, but ampicillin-sulbactam, ceftriaxone, metronidazole, clindamycin, amoxicillin, amoxicillin-clavulanate, cefuroxime, and vancomycin are often used in the treatment of these infections. The choice of antibiotic, however, is only one consideration. It is also important that antibiotics are dosed to optimize their pharmacodynamic target attainment. Like other serious infections, therapy can be transitioned from i

Foodborne diseases represent a major health problem in the United States. The Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) of CDC's Emerging Infections Program monitors cases of laboratory-diagnosed infection caused by eight pathogens transmitted commonly through food in 10 U.S. sites.* This report summarizes preliminary 2018 data and changes since 2015. During 2018, FoodNet identified 25,606 infections, 5,893 hospitalizations, and 120 deaths. The incidence of most infections is increasing, including those caused by Campylobacter and Salmonella, which might be partially attributabl

Foodborne diseases are an important public health problem in the United States. The Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network* (FoodNet) conducts surveillance in 10 U.S. sites for all laboratory-confirmed infections caused by selected pathogens transmitted commonly through food to quantify them and monitor their incidence. This report summarizes 2012 preliminary surveillance data and describes trends since 1996. A total of 19,531 infections, 4,563 hospitalizations, and 68 deaths associated with foodborne diseases were reported in 2012. For most infections, incidence was highest among chil

This report describes the clinical laboratory findings in golden hamsters experimentally infected with yellow fever (YF) virus. An accompanying paper describes the pathologic findings. Following intraperitoneal inoculation of a virulent strain of YF virus, hamsters developed a high-titered viremia (up to 109/mL) lasting 5--6 days and abnormal liver function tests. YF hemagglutination-inhibiting antibodies appeared 4 or 5 days after infection, often while viremia was still present. The mortality rate in YF-infected hamsters was variable, depending on the virus strain and the age of the animals.

Cutaneous mycobacterial infections present an ongoing challenge in terms of diagnosis and treatment options. Accurate diagnosis of cutaneous mycobacterial infections can take eight weeks, and they often provide few medication options. Increasing antibiotic resistance limits treatment options, especially by mouth. Negative diagnostic tests such as biopsies, serology, and cultures in the presence of a cutaneous mycobacterial infection are common and could prolong the diagnosis. This report highlights key features, including the atypical appearance of discharge, the eruption of an adjacent absces

Infection-related glomerulonephritis (IRGN) is a rare but severe complication of bacterial infections, including subacute bacterial endocarditis (SBE). We present a case of a 15-year-old male with bilateral lower limb swelling, facial puffiness, frothy urine, and dyspnea. Laboratory investigations revealed abnormal kidney function tests and imaging studies confirmed infective endocarditis. Blood cultures isolated Burkholderia cepacia and methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative Staphylococcus. Kidney biopsy confirmed immune complex-mediated glomerulonephritis. The patient received multidiscipl

Pasteurella multocida is a common cause of cutaneous and soft-tissue infections. Cases of primary diseases in the lung result from the inhalation of airborne contaminants from infected nasopharyngeal secretions from pets such as cats and dogs. Clinical presentations due to P. multocida vary from a cough with or without hemoptysis or chest pain to severe debility. This is common in elderly populations with existing pulmonary diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchiectasis. The present case highlights P. multocida pneumonia in an Indian zookeeper with a pet dog who had

We report the clinical and neuroimaging findings of an immunocompetent patient with concurrent pneumococcal and West Nile virus meningoencephalitis with relapsing clinical course despite a full course of antibiotic treatment. The patient developed acute oculomotor nerve palsy with pupillary involvement and bilateral hearing loss, and delayed right leg monoparesis. We speculate that coexisting bacterial and viral neuroinvasive infections contributed to the unusual clinical and imaging manifestations, and that overwhelming laboratory and clinical features of bacterial meningitis masked the typic

With the evolution of the AIDS epidemic into a relatively chronic disease, practitioners will continue to see an increase in the number of patients infected with HIV for the diagnosis and management of podiatric pathology. A thorough history and physical examination, taken with a complete knowledge base of HIV implications, will enhance the ability to form the strategies required to treat the manifestations of this disease and to request appropriate referrals. Laboratory studies and other diagnostic techniques have been developed and increased in specificity to allow for earlier and more preci

Defective interfering RNAs have long been thought to be a causal factor of persistent RNA virus infections. Here we describe a novel type of defective genome of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus and the unique mechanism by which these RNAs appear to contribute to the establishment and maintenance of persistent infection. The defective genomes have short deletions in the untranslated regions at their termini and additional nontemplated terminal nucleotides. This and previous work from our laboratory suggested that the RNAs were competent for replication but not for transcription. From experime

An analysis using case reports, laboratory records of tests for C. trachomatis, and Hospital Discharge Summary data shows that, following implementation of a chlamydia prevention program in Wisconsin in 1985, statewide declines were observed in prevalence, incidence and complications of infection. In 1990, prevalence rates among teenage women peaked at 2,794 infections per 100,000 15-19-year-old females. Between 1987 and 1991 (a period of stable testing volume), the proportion of positive tests decreased in all age-groups for females (by 29-41%) and males (by 10-14%), and the incidence of new

Intestinal protozoa like Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia have been proposed as vectors or cofactors in the development of AIDS. To determine whether these protozoa could transmit HIV, laboratory strains of protozoa were cocultured with cells chronically infected by a highly replicative strain of HIV-1. Entamoeba histolytica, but not Giardia lamblia, took up virus. Immunologically detectable HIV-1 was present in the amebae up to 48 h after exposure to infected cells, but this virus could not be transferred to uninfected human cells. Amebae isolated directly from two HIV-infected indiv

Diagnosis of immunoglobulin deficiency with increased IgM (hyper-IgM syndrome) was made in three siblings (two girls and a boy) on the basis of history, physical findings, and laboratory data. The prominent clinical findings were recurrent viral and bacterial infections of the respiratory tract. The most severe infections affected the male patient, who died at the age of 8 years. Family history and the lack of clinical signs in the parents and relatives indicated no immunodeficiency which, together with the occurrence of the disease in both sexes, indicated an autosomal recessive inheritance.

Detection of IgG antibodies to Strongyloides stercoralis in sera of 29 patients with strongyloidiasis was attempted by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using an extract of filariform larvae of S. stercoralis. The antibodies were found with a high degree of sensitivity in almost all patients. The ELISA values, however, did not correlate with the intensity of the infection or with differences in clinical and laboratory parameters. When the ELISA values of persons with Strongyloides were compared with those showing no S. stercoralis by faecal examinations, a significant difference wa

The cytopathic changes of herpes simplex virus, varicella-zoster virus, the human polyomaviruses, and the trachoma agent can be recognised in smears prepared from a wide variety of specimens. The morphology of virus-infected cells is described, and the clinical value of these observations is discussed. Cytological diagnosis offers a rapid and convenient method of detecting infection with these viruses which can be confirmed by conventional virological method while the patient is still in the acute stages of the disease. Confirmation can also be made retrospectively by reprocessing cells, ident

BACKGROUND: Infective endocarditis (IE) is a potentially life-threatening infection that affects the inner lining of the heart, particularly the heart valves. Patients with preexisting heart conditions, damaged heart valves, or a history of intravenous drug use are at a higher risk of acquiring IE.
LOCAL PROBLEM: A rural acute care facility reported that 68.75% of patients who had a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection were diagnosed with IE. Review of medical records showed that 65% of patients with IE did not have antibiotic start/stop dates and 51% were discharged before t
