Preoperative neutrophil lymphocyte ratio but not platelet lymphocyte ratio predicts survival and early relapse in patients with oral, pharyngeal, and lip cancer.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the prognostic value of preoperative neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in oral, pharyngeal, and lip cancer for survival and relapse. METHODS: Clinic-pathologic and hematological records were retrospectively retrieved. Patients completed follow-up period were included for survival and relapse analysis. RESULTS: The preoperative NLR value was a prognostic factor for both overall survival and relapse-free survival. The high NLR group demonstrated higher total relapse rate, higher local relapse rate, and higher relapse rate within 12 mo…

Combined Irradiation by Gamma Rays and Carbon Nuclei Increases the C/EBP-β LIP Isoform Content in the Pituitary Gland of Rats.

C/EBP-β, a basic leucine zipper transcription factor, has important roles in the regulation of the body immune and inflammatory responses. Wistar rats subjected to combined irradiation were characterized by an increase in the content of the C/EBP-β LIP isoform in the pituitary gland. The obtained data indicate that moderate doses of ionizing radiation to initiate the endoplasmic reticulum stress response and are likely to initiate C/EBP-β-mediated cell death according to the apoptotic scenario. This study also confirms the earlier hypothesis about the alterations of the hypothalamic-pituitary-…

Surgical, speech, and hearing outcomes at five years of age in internationally adopted children and Swedish-born children with cleft lip and/or palate.

Internationally adopted children (IAC) with a cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) tend to arrive with un-operated palates at an age at which their Swedish-born peers have completed their primary palate surgery. Our aim of the present study was to analyze surgical, speech and hearing outcomes of IAC at age 5 and compare with those of a matched group of Swedish-born children. Fifty children with CL/P born in 1994-2005 participated in the study. Twenty-five IAC were matched according to age, sex and cleft type with 25 Swedish-born children. Audio recordings were perceptually analyzed by two experience…

Correction of labial tubercle defect in repaired bilateral cleft lips using bilateral vermilion musculomucosal sliding flaps: Case series.

RATIONALE: Insignifificant, asymmetrical or lack of labial tubercle often occurs after cleft lip surgery due to improper treatment of vermilion tissue. Especially in the cases of bilateral cleft lip, because of short front lip and insuffificient vermilion tissue, the median vermilion depression often occurs after surgery, forming a "whistling" deformity. The object of this study is to verify the outcomes of patients with median labial tubercle detects after treatment with bilateral vermilion musculomucosal sliding flflaps (VMSF). PATIENT CONCERNS: Six patients with median labial tubercle defe…

First report of Toxoplasma gondii sporulated oocysts and Giardia duodenalis in commercial green-lipped mussels (Perna canaliculus) in New Zealand.

Pollution of marine ecosystems with the protozoan parasites Toxoplasma gondii, Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia duodenalis can be studied using bivalve shellfish as biosentinels. Although evidence suggests that these parasites are present in New Zealand coastal waters, the extent of protozoal pollution has not been investigated. This study used optimised molecular methods to detect the presence of Cryptosporidium spp., G. duodenalis and T. gondii in commercially sourced green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus), an endemic species found throughout coastal New Zealand. A nested polymerase chain r…

Investigation of dominant and recessive inheritance models in genome-wide association studies data of nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate.

Nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (nsCL/P) is one of the most common congenital malformation worldwide, and its etiology involves both genetic and environmental factors. Recent genome-wide and targeted genetic studies of nsCL/P have identified numerous genetic risk loci, under the hypothesis of a multiplicative mode of inheritance. The present study investigated whether novel nsCL/P risk loci could be identified by analyzing dominant/recessive genetic effects in single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data from genome-wide association studies. For this purpose, a genome-wide inv…

Association of single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the IRF6 gene with non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate in the Xinjiang Uyghur population.

Our main aim was to investigate the association between the interferon regulatory factor (IRF6) gene and non-syndromic cleft lip and palate (nsCLP) in the Xinjiang Uyghur population. Twelve single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) were screened in a group of 100 patients with nsCLP and in a control group of 60 unaffected subjects by next generation sequencing using a MiSeq Benchtop Sequencer (Illumina). Our case-control association analysis showed that the SNP marker rs7545538 differed significantly in genotype (codominant model; CC compared with CG compared with GG; p=0.038) and allele frequenci…

Non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate in Asian populations: Association analysis on three gene polymorphisms of the folate pathway.

OBJECTIVE: Orofacial clefts (OFCs) are one of the most common birth defects in humans. They are the subject of a number of investigations aimed at elucidating the bases of their complex mode of inheritance involving both genetic and environmental factors. Genes belonging to the folate pathway have been among the most studied. The aim of the investigation was to replicate previous studies reporting evidence of association between polymorphisms of folate related genes and the occurrence of non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P), using three independent samples of different…

Changes in nose symmetry in unilateral cleft lip and palate treated by differing pre-surgical assistance: An objective assessment of primary repair.

BACKGROUND: Residual deformity of the nose, not lip, continues to be the greater challenge in UCCLP rehabilitation. Platform distortions often re-emerge following primary reconstruction revealing the stereotypical cleft-nose. Nasal alveolar molding reduces nose asymmetry. However, this study applies directional mechanics to the underlying platform distortions and soft tissue nose, introducing a novel device addressing the distorted septo-premaxillary junction. METHODS: Retrospective assessment of 47 UCCLP patients by 2-dimensional photographic analysis with 24 subjects treated by dento-maxill…

Identification of functional variants for cleft lip with or without cleft palate in or near PAX7, FGFR2, and NOG by targeted sequencing of GWAS loci.

Although genome-wide association studies (GWASs) for nonsyndromic orofacial clefts have identified multiple strongly associated regions, the causal variants are unknown. To address this, we selected 13 regions from GWASs and other studies, performed targeted sequencing in 1,409 Asian and European trios, and carried out a series of statistical and functional analyses. Within a cluster of strongly associated common variants near NOG, we found that one, rs227727, disrupts enhancer activity. We furthermore identified significant clusters of non-coding rare variants near NTN1 and NOG and found seve
