Benign hepatocellular neoplasia occurring in 22 women receiving oral contraceptive steroids but no other known hepatotoxins is reported for the first time from a registry for liver tumors associated with oral contraceptives. A review of recent literature has yielded 45 cases including 3 previously reported by the authors. This striking increase in what were formerly rare primary liver tumors in young women strongly suggests a cause and effect of relationship. The object of the investigation was to study the capacity of the liver to metabolize drugs under diversified conditions (cirrhosis, hepatitis, cholestasis in alcoholics, in diabetics as well as in eplieptics treated with barbiturates) as well as the possibility of inducing this function. The study included 58 cases of liver abscess draining into the thorax, seen at the Hospital Infantil de Mexico from January, 1963 to December, 1973. These 58 complicated cases represent 16.2% from a total of 358 patients with liver abscess seen through the same period of time. The earliest and most reproduceable lesion associated with chronic alcohol abuse is fatty liver. In some alcoholics this may be superseded by alcoholic hepatitis, which may represent the link between the early lesion and cirrhosis. Thirty patients with alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver were studied for in vivo and in vitro correlates of cellular immunity. Seventy-seven percent failed to be sensitized to dinitrochlorobenzene, indicating impairment of the in vivo cellular immune response. A significant decrease in the number of T-rosette-forming cells was observed in this group of patients (.01 smaller than P smaller than .025). Cryoglobulins were detected in the sera of thirteen patients with acute viral hepatitis and of twelve with chronic hepatic diseases (active chronic hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis and cryptogenic cirrhosis). Their nature and antibody activity was studied.
