UNLABELLED: Background Following an upward trajectory in Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) diagnoses in the UK from 2004 to 2016, with annual diagnoses increasing from 28 to 904, diagnoses fell to 641 in 2017; this was inconsistent with the upward trend in other bacterial sexually transmissible infections (STIs) between 2016 and 2017. An analysis of surveillance data from multiple sources to investigate the possible factors contributing to this decline in LGV was performed.
METHODS: LGV tests and diagnoses in the UK from 2004 to 2018 were captured through laboratory data from the LGV Reference L

Objective: To understand the status of maternal testing, detection and trends of HIV infection among pregnant women in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture (Liangshan) of Sichuan province during 2008-2016. Methods: Data were collected from the monthly work report on maternal HIV testings and the case-reporting records of HIV-positive pregnant women, from the National Management Information System of China's Prevention of Mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis, and HBV Program. Descriptive method was applied to show both the maternal HIV and predelivery HIV testing rates and maternal HIV p

OBJECTIVES: Uptake of cervical screening among women aged 50-64 years is declining. Not feeling at risk because of current sexual behaviour is a reason some older women give for not being screened. We hypothesised that explaining the long interval between acquiring human papillomavirus (HPV) and developing cervical cancer would increase the relevance of screening in older women.
METHODS: Women aged 50-64 years (n=597) who did not intend to go for screening were recruited through an online panel and randomised to one of three information conditions: cause only (basic information about HPV and

BACKGROUND: Patients with acute stroke are particularly vulnerable to delirium episodes. Although delirium detection is important, no evidence-based recommendations have been established to date on how these patients should be routinely screened for delirium or which tool should be used for this purpose in this population. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify delirium screening tools for patients with acute stroke and to summarise their accuracy.
METHODS: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, a systematic search of Medline, CI

BACKGROUND: The challenge of managing age-related diseases is increasing; routine checks by the general practitioner do not reduce cardiovascular mortality. The aim here was to reduce cardiovascular mortality by advanced population-based cardiovascular screening. The present article reports the organization of the study, the acceptability of the screening offer, and the relevance of multifaceted screening for prevention and management of cardiovascular disease.
METHODS: Danish men aged 65-74 years were invited randomly (1 : 2) to a cardiovascular screening examination using low-dose non-contr

Heavy drinking and alcohol use disorder are major public health problems. Practitioners not specialising in alcohol treatment are often unaware of the guidelines for preventing, identifying, and treating heavy drinking and alcohol use disorder. However, a consensus exists that clinically useful and valuable tools are available to address these issues. Here, we review existing information and developments from the past 5 years in these areas. We also include information on heavy drinking and alcohol use disorder among individuals with co-occurring psychiatric disorders, including drug use disor

BACKGROUND: Lysosomal acid lipase deficiency (LAL-D) is an autosomal recessive disorder that can present as a severe, infantile form also known as Wolman disease. We sought to determine the outcomes and clinical needs of infants diagnosed with LAL-D, treated with enzyme replacement therapy (ERT).
METHODS: A chart review was conducted on two infantile-onset LAL-D patients to determine clinical outcomes based on laboratory results, abdominal imaging, growth and dietary records, cardiology, endocrinology, ophthalmology, hematology, and neurocognitive evaluations.
RESULTS: Two patients, both dia

In 1994, combined active and passive screening reported 1469 cases from the historic Gambian Human African Trypanosomiasis (gHAT) foci of West Nile, Uganda. Since 2011 systematic active screening has stopped and there has been reliance on passive screening. During 2014, passive screening alone detected just nine cases. In the same year a tsetse control intervention was expanded to cover the main gHAT foci in West Nile to curtail transmission of gHAT contributing to the elimination of gHAT as a public health problem in the area. It is known that sole reliance on passive screening is slow to det

BACKGROUND: Positive family history is a risk factor for development of colorectal cancer. Despite numerous studies on the topic, the absolute risk in patients with a positive family history remains unclear and therefore studies are lacking to validate non-invasive screening methods in individuals with positive family history.
AIM: To quantify the risk of colorectal cancer in individuals with a positive family history.
METHODS: A comprehensive electronic literature search was performed using PubMed from January 1955 until November 2017, EMBASE from 1947 until 2018, and Cochrane Library witho

BACKGROUND & AIMS: People with a first-degree relative with colorectal cancer (CRC) are recommended to start CRC screening at age 40. However, there is limited information on how many people in different age groups have a known family history of CRC and how many of them have had a colonoscopy.
METHODS: We set up a multicenter, cross-sectional, population-based study in Germany to determine what proportions of persons in age groups from 40 to 54 years old have a known family history of CRC. We invited 160,000 persons to participate in an online survey from 2015 through 2016. We investigated wh

INTRODUCTION: Social, structural and systems barriers inhibit uptake of HIV testing. HIV self-testing (HIVST) has shown promising uptake by otherwise underserved priority groups including men, young people and first-time testers. Here, we use characteristics of HIVST kit recipients to investigate delivery to these priority groups during HIVST scale-up in three African countries.
METHODS: Kit distributors collected individual-level age, sex and testing history from all clients. These data were aggregated and analysed by country (Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe) for five distribution models: local

Sexual and reproductive health are an integral part of all youths' health and wellbeing, including youth who are transgender and gender-expansive. This article will discuss general approaches to the sexual and reproductive health care of transgender and gender-expansive youth, and review the topics of contraception and menstrual suppression, fertility preservation and family building, and the prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted infections and HIV in this population. Although transgender youth on testosterone therapy often become amenorrheic, ovulation and pregnancy can still occur

BACKGROUND: Thermal coagulation is gaining popularity for treating cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) in screening programs in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) due to unavailability of cryotherapy.
OBJECTIVES: Assess the effectiveness of thermal coagulation for treatment of CIN lesions compared with cryotherapy, with a focus on LMICs.
SEARCH STRATEGY: Papers were identified from previous reviews and electronic literature search in February 2018 with publication date after 2010.
SELECTION CRITERIA: Publications with original data evaluating cryotherapy or thermal coagulation wi

OBJECTIVE: Orthostatic hypotension is a common condition associated with adverse cardiovascular and cognitive prognosis. Screening for orthostatic hypotension consists of blood pressure measurements in supine (or sitting) and standing position during clinical consultations. As orthostatic hypotension is a poorly reproducible clinical condition, it is likely that the simple measurement carried out during consultations underestimates the true prevalence of the condition. The objective of this study is, therefore, to determine whether screening for orthostatic hypotension with home blood pressure

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Intracranial aneurysm rupture is the most devastating complication of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease. Whether selective or widespread intracranial aneurysm screening is indicated remains controversial.
DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS & MEASUREMENTS: Records of 3010 patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease evaluated at the Mayo Clinic between 1989 and 2017 were reviewed. Those who had presymptomatic magnetic resonance angiography screening were included.
RESULTS: Ninety-four intracranial aneurysms were diagnosed in 75 of 812 (9%) patien
