BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Myorhythmia is a hyperkinetic movement disorder that derives from a disruption of the Guillain-Mollaret triangle, due to an identifiable structural lesion. It is often disabling and with disappointing control under medical treatment.
METHODS: Herein, a case of myorhythmia secondary to a vascular insult in the brainstem is reported and an unsuccessful attempt to palliate it with functional neurosurgery.
RESULTS: A 67-year-old man displayed a repetitive, rhythmic, slow 2-3 Hz movement, 6 months after suffering a pontomesencephalic hypertensive haematoma. The kinetic phe

Involuntary choreiform movements are clinical hallmark of Huntington's disease, an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder caused by an increased number of CAG trinucleotide repeats in the huntingtin gene. Involuntary movements start with an impairment of facial muscles and then affect trunk and limbs muscles. Huntington's disease symptoms are caused by changes in cortex and striatum neurons induced by mutated huntingtin protein. However, little is known about the impact of this abnormal protein in spinal cord motoneurons that control movement. Therefore, in this study we evaluated abnor

BACKGROUND: Physical demands at work remain a leading cause of work-related injuries in industrialized countries.
AIMS: To use the 2003 Spanish National Survey of Work Conditions to examine prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and physical load at work.
METHODS: Using a representative sample of 5236 persons from the Spanish workforce, the prevalence of carrying or lifting heavy loads, use of significant force and repetitive movements was examined among those with and without MSDs.
RESULTS: Use of significant force and carrying heavy weights decreased inversely in rela

Chorea gravidarum is uncommon movement disorder of pregnancy, characterized by involuntary, abrupt, non-rhythmic movements. It can be idiopathic or secondary to the underlying pathology. A 28-year-old, primigravida woman who was 8 weeks and 6 days of gestation presented with a history of involuntary choreiform movements in the left side limbs and facial twitch for 2 weeks. The symptoms started just after onset of severe emesis gravidarum. There was no meaningful medical history or family history, and she was taking no regular medication. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed moyamoy

Children who are performing at a prelinguistic level of vocal communication present unique issues related to successful intervention relative to the general population of children with speech disorders. These children do not consistently use meaning-based vocalizations to communicate with those around them. General goals for this group of children include stimulating more mature vocalization types and connecting these vocalizations to meanings that can be used to communicate consistently with persons in their environment. We propose a means, motive, and opportunity conceptual framework for ass

PURPOSE: Dentists may be the first health care professionals to recognize unusual and abnormal oral movements collectively termed oral dyskinesias. The aims of this clinical overview are to raise the dental community's awareness about this important and complex topic and describe the clinical features and management of the main entities.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A MEDLINE search of the different entities reported in the English and French literature was conducted. The main findings of a field study on oral dyskinesia were also reviewed.
RESULTS: Involuntary movement disorders are often drug re…

Ideomotor apraxia is defined as a disturbance in timing, sequencing, and spatial organization of gestural movements. Left hemisphere motor dominance reflected by ideomotor apraxia mainly refers to spatially and temporally complex movements performed outside the natural context. While clinicoanatomical studies have failed to unveil a specific lesion correlating with apraxia, white matter damage-interrupting corticocortical and corticosubcortical connections-seems crucial for the deficit to be persistent and severe. Patients with basal ganglia lesions and disorders, such as Parkinson's disease a

INTRODUCTION: Periodic legs movements of sleep (PLMS) are rhythmic, standard and repetitive contractions of muscles of the extremities during the sleep. It is known that the patients with restless legs syndrome (RLS) have disorders during the sleep: increase in the latency of the sleep, increased number of arousal, etc.; most of them have also periodic movements of the legs during the sleep.
OBJECTIVE: The relationship of the periodic movements of the legs during the sleep with polyneuropathy is not clear. Some authors have found evidence of electrophysiological and pathological of signs of a

Neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease, stroke, and spinal cord injury can pose significant threats to human mortality, morbidit … ional principles, and prevalent paradigms. It then critically examines specific BCI applications in movement disorders, disorders of consciousness, cognitive and mental disorders, as well as sensory disorders, highlighting novel approaches and their potential impact on patient care. This review reveals emerging trends in BCI applications, such as the integration of …

Heralded by obsessive-compulsive disorder and anxiety, chorea-acanthocytosis may initially present in a psychiatric setting. As insidious onset of involuntary movements is commonly precipitated by dopamine blocking agents, this may not prompt further neurological investigation until symptoms progress after withdrawal of the suspected offending drug. Oromandibular dystonia and frontal disinhibition should call for early neurologic evaluation.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an inherited neurodegenerative disorder. Involuntary choreaform movements are the main symptom. The prevalence of HD in Arab countries is not fully understood, as there are only a few reports indicating disease incidence. Therefore, there is an urgent need for an investigation to determine the frequency of HD in the Middle East, especially within Arab countries, and at the same time enhance people's awareness of the disease.

Hemilingual spasm is a little-known movement disorder, presenting as intermittent paroxysmal involuntary contractions of half of the tongue muscles. The authors report a case of hemilingual spasm caused by an arachnoid cyst. After marsupialization of the cyst, the patient's symptoms immediately resolved. There has been no recurrence of hemilingual spasm during the follow-up period of more than 40 months.

Apraxia is an impairment of voluntary movements not caused by paresis, sensory deficits or aphasia. It appears mainly after left-hemispheric parietal or callosal lesions. Our patient had a temporary apraxia that could be correlated with the development of the perifocal area around a left parietooccipital cerebral bleeding. These neuropsychological disorders belonged to the development and the disappearance of the perifocal area as seen via several MRI.

We report the case of a female patient with a progressive therapy-resistant extrapyramidal movement disorder. Cranial computed tomography showed symetrical hyperdensities in the globus pallidus. The same areas are of decreased signal intensity in magnetic resonance imaging. These findings suggest an increased iron accumulation. The clinical symptoms and the radiological findings of the cerebrum are highly indicative for a Hallervorden-Spatz disease.

INTRODUCTION: Over the past five decades the bulk of research on exposure to maternal mental health disorders and infant neurodevelopment has been generated in high-income countries. The current study included infants, residing in low-income communities in South Africa, born to mothers with a history of psychiatric disorders.
AIM: To assess the motor behavior of 10- to 20-week-old infants exposed to maternal mental health disorders, and a subgroup of infants with prenatal psychotropic medication exposure.
METHODS: The present study is a cross-sectional descriptive study, with a longitudinal

AIM: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the reliability of a digital jaw registration system for measuring mandibular movement and condylar position.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data on mandibular movement and condylar position were collected from a consecutively recruited sample of 20 functionally healthy adults (age range: 19-77 years; 45% female) using an optoelectronic registration system (Tizian JMA optic; zebris Medical, Isny, Germany). Participants were randomly assigned to one of two calibrated examiners, who exclusively performed the measurements for the entire study period. Con
