The Swedish Cancer Registry, in a linkage with the Swedish Registry of Statistics, was used to trace all patients operated on in Southern Sweden for histopathologically verified malignant primary central nervous system tumors during the years 1958 to 1975. Patients surviving 10 years after the operation were identified, and their original surgical specimens were reexamined. Six (0.5%) of 1147 patients were shown to have survived for between 12 and 28 years after surgery for supratentorial astrocytomas grade III and IV. All six patients are in good condition, without signs of tumor recurrence.

A child had a pulmonary plasma cell granuloma/fibrous histiocytoma that recurred after lobectomy in 1952 and required pneumonectomy in 1953, at which time it extended into the mediastinum at the pulmonary hilus. A metastatic nodule was removed from within the diaphragmatic musculature. The long-term favorable outcome suggests a good prognosis after adequate surgical therapy. The possible relationship of fibrous histiocytoma/plasma cell granuloma to modified measles is discussed.

The value of computerized tomography (CT) was compared with that of conventional exploratory methods (standard radiology, bronchial tomography and endoscopy) in 60 patients with non-anaplastic bronchial cancer evaluated preoperatively. Computed tomography was performed in four patients with solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Two tumors originated in the nasal cavity, one in the maxillary sinus, and one in the frontal sinus. Soft tissue mass(es) was seen in all patients. Bone destruction was apparent in only two patients. It seems possible to rule out carcinomas in such patients with no or subtle bony destruction. Computed tomography was also helpful for planning radiation therapy.

Sixty-one patients with carcinoma of the remnant stomach after distal gastrectomy were admitted by the end of 1982. The histopathologic and clinical findings in 682 patients with carcinoma of the rectum have been analyzed. Invasion of veins and nerves by primary growth was found in 38.9 and 34.9 per cent, respectively. The five-year survival rate for patients with resectable tumors was 49 per cent. During the years 1952--1977, 646 patients with abnormal cervical cytology underwent one biopsy (595) or ring biopsy of the cervix. The histological diagnoses were invasive carcinoma 20 (3%) microinvasive carcinoma 16 (2%), carcinoma in situ and severe dysplasia 418 (65%), other dysplasias 149 (23%). Extended resection of the trachea with construction of a mediastinal tracheostomy was performed upon 21 patients with primary or recurrent carcinoma involving the cervical part of the trachea. In 12 patients, major complications developed, and eight died of these complications. A retrospective analysis of 27 cases of primary carcinoma of the ureter is presented. The ages of the patients ranged from forty-two to eighty-three years, with the highest incidence between the fifth and seventh decades.
