Conjoint analysis of clinical, imaging, and pathological features of schistosomiasis and colorectal cancer.

This study aims to examine and compare clinical, radiological, and pathological data between colorectal cancer (CRC) patients with and without schistosomiasis and uncover distinctive CRC characteristics when accompanied by schistosomiasis. This retrospective study is based on data collected from 341 patients diagnosed with CRC post-surgery and pathology. Of these patients, 101 (Group A) were diagnosed with colorectal cancer co-occurring with schistosomiasis (CRC-S), while 240 patients (Group B) were diagnosed with colorectal cancer without concurrent schistosomiasis (CRC-NS). Both groups were

[A Case of Pancreatic Invasive Micropapillary Carcinoma That Survived Seven Years after Resection and Chemotherapy].

We present the case of a 47-year-old man who underwent a subtotal stomach-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy for pancreatic head cancer. Histopathological diagnosis revealed that the majority of the cancer was an invasive micropapillary carcinoma(IMPC). Postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy using S-1 was continued for 4 years, at the end of which, multiple lymph node metastases were identified. Therefore, gemcitabine plus S-1 therapy was initiated. The treatment reduced the lymph node in size and resulted in the maintenance of a partial response for a year and a half. However, increased lymph no

Survival outcomes after synchronous para-aortic lymph node metastasis in colorectal cancer: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Synchronous para-aortic lymph node metastasis (PALNM) in colorectal cancer (CRC) is a relatively rare clinical entity. There is a lack of consensus on management of these patients, and the role of para-aortic lymph node dissection (PALND) remains controversial. This systematic review aims to describe the survival outcomes in colorectal cancer with synchronous PALNM when lymph node dissection is performed. METHODS: A systematic review of Pubmed, Embase and Web of Science databases for PALND in CRC was performed. Studies including patients with synchronous PALNM undergoing resection

Oncologic outcomes of surgical para-aortic lymph node staging in patients with advanced cervical carcinoma undergoing chemoradiation.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate the utilization and impact of surgical para-aortic lymph node staging on the survival of patients with locally advanced stage cervical carcinoma receiving definitive chemoradiation. METHODS: We identified patients in the National Cancer Database diagnosed between January 2010 and December 2015 with locally advanced (FIGO 2009 stage IB2-IVA) cervical carcinoma who did not undergo hysterectomy, received primary chemoradiation and had at least 1 month of follow-up. Two groups of patients were formed based on the assessment method of para-aortic lymph node status

Lymphadenectomy in Primary Fallopian Tube Cancer is Associated with Improved Survival.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Primary fallopian tube cancer (PFTC) shares the same diagnostic and management guidelines with epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). The LION trail raised concerns regarding the role of systematic pelvic and para-aortic lymphadenectomy during debulking surgery. We aimed to evaluate the significance of lymphadenectomy in PFTC survival. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed the clinical features and survival of patients with PFTC who underwent primary surgery in our center between January 2013 and October 2020. RESULTS: Sixty-one patients diagnosed with PFTC were inc

Pathologic node-negative lung cancer: Adequacy of lymph node yield and a tool to assess the risk of occult nodal disease.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate lymph node (LN) staging is crucial for prognostication in NSCLC. Diagnosis of pN0 disease is based on the absence of positive LNs, irrespective of the number of LNs excised, and is thus susceptible to sampling error. Tumors that are assumed to be pN0 may in fact be understaged. We developed a tool to quantify the risk of occult nodal disease (OND) among patients with pN0 NSCLC in terms of the number of LNs examined. METHODS: Patients treated surgically for stage I-III primary NSCLC between 2004 and 2014 (n = 49,356) were extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, an

Prediction of Pulmonary Artery-Adherent Lymph Nodes for Minimally Invasive Lung Resection.

BACKGROUND: During minimally invasive surgery (MIS), pulmonary artery (PA)-adherent lymph nodes (LNs) may increase the risk of conversion to thoracotomy and/or PA injury. The aims of this study were to investigate (1) preoperative workups as predictors of PA-adherent LNs and (2) predictors of conversion/PA injury during MIS. METHODS: We investigated 1210 patients who underwent anatomical lung resection (MIS: 772, thoracotomy: 438) and determined the PA-adherent LN status by reviewing the operation video/record. The size and calcification of the hilar LNs on computed tomography, bilateral high

Recent Advances in the Treatment of Colorectal Cancer: A Review.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer worldwide, and surgical treatment remains the first-line treatment to provide a cure. In addition to the aging population, obesity, low physical activity, and smoking habits increase CRC risk. Despite advances in surgical techniques, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, colorectal cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. For early-stage CRC, endoscopic treatment, including endoscopic mucosal resection and endoscopic submucosal dissection, has been performed. However, lymph node dissection is an integral part

Predicting Pathologic Lymph Node Positivity in cN0 Pharynx and Larynx Cancers.

BACKGROUND: Elective neck dissection is a standard of care for pharynx and most larynx cancer patients undergoing surgery, based largely on historical series. It is unclear if this is necessary for all patients in the modern era. METHODS: Patients with cN0 oropharynx, larynx, and hypopharynx cancers diagnosed from 2010-2015 undergoing primary surgery were identified in the National Cancer Data Base. RESULTS: Inclusion criteria were met by 4117 cN0 patients. The presence of lymphovascular invasion (LVI) was the strongest independent predictor of pN+ (odds ratio [OR] = 4.19, 95% confidence int

Salivary Duct Carcinoma: An Aggressive Salivary Gland Carcinoma with Morphologic Variants, Newly Identified Molecular Characteristics, and Emerging Treatment Modalities.

Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is a rare, aggressive salivary gland malignancy with significant mortality. Morphologically, most tumors are characterized by apocrine differentiation with a typical immunophenotype of androgen receptor positive/gross cystic disease fluid protein positive/estrogen receptor negative/progesterone receptor negative. Several morphologic variants of SDC exist, representing diagnostic pitfalls. Several differential diagnoses should be considered because prognosis, treatment, and management may be different from SDC. For SDC, current treatment strategies are aggressive a

Manipulating Extracellular Matrix Organizations and Parameters to Control Local Cancer Invasion.

Metastasis contributes to over 90 percent of cancer mortalities and may be influenced by the extracellular matrix (ECM). ECM microenvironments differ in matrix organization, cell-matrix adhesions, and fiber rigidity, which may affect cancer migration and, thus, should be investigated. To understand the interactions between cancer cells and the ECM, we simulate local invasion through ECM organizations of varying determinants. Randomly curved organizations of normal ovarian stroma exhibit minimal local invasion. In contrast, wave-like and parallel linear structures in reorganized ECM organizatio

Risk factors for nodal involvement in early-stage rectal cancer: a new scoring system based on the analysis of 326 cases.

BACKGROUND: the purpose of this study was to identify which clinicopathological features of early-stage rectal cancer (ESRC) are significantly correlated with the risk of local-regional lymph node metastases (LNM) and to quantify the strength of this association through a novel scoring system. According to several case studies, about 20% of operated ESRC are found with occult lymph nodal metastases at the histological examination. The low frequency of local recurrence in these tumors treated with total mesorectal excision (TME) compared to transanal approaches highlights the role of mesorectal

Onset of ulcerative colitis and complete response during the treatment of a metastatic colon cancer: case report and literature review.

Colorectal cancer is a common cancer worldwide. Several risk factors have been described, such as age, lifestyle and family history. Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are a well-recognized risk factor for the development of colorectal cancer. However, the onset of an IBD de novo in the context of the treatment of a colorectal neoplasia has not been reported before, except in the context of the treatment with immunocheckpoint inhibitors. Fifty-nine-years old man diagnosed with a metastatic colorectal cancer who received conventional treatment with chemotherapy and an antiangiogenic inhibitor. T
