Single-unit activity of the anterior Globus pallidus internus in Tourette patients and posterior Globus pallidus internus in dystonic patients.

OBJECTIVES: Our goal was to provide a detailed analysis of neurons' electrophysiological activity recorded in sub-territories of Globus pallidus internus (GPi) used as Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) targets for these clinical conditions to potentially assist electrode targeting. METHODS: We used intra-operative microelectrode recording during stereotactic neurosurgery to guide implantation of DBS lead. RESULTS: Units in the medial anterior part of GPi of 7 Tourette's syndrome patients under general anesthesia were firing at mean and median rate of 32.1 and 21 Hz respectively (n = 101), with 45

The safety and efficacy of propofol as a replacement for amobarbital in intracarotid Wada testing of presurgical patients with epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: The intracarotid sodium amytal procedure (the "Wada test") has for many years been the gold standard for language and memory lateralization and remains an important part of presurgical analysis for patients with medically intractable seizures. Due to shortages in the key sedative (amobarbital), neuropsychologists have turned to alternatives such as propofol. Our aim was to investigate the safety and efficacy of propofol relative to amobarbital in the Wada test. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of the 97 Wada procedures performed at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clini

Somatosensory evoked potentials in carotid artery stenting: Effectiveness in ascertaining cerebral ischemic events.

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) have been used in various endovascular procedures and carotid endarterectomy, but to our knowledge no literature deals exclusively with the utility of SSEP in carotid artery stenting (CAS). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of SSEP in detecting cerebral ischemic events during CAS. We conducted a prospective study in 35 CAS procedures in 31 patients during an 18month period. Thirty-three patients without near occlusion underwent stenting using dual protection (simultaneous flow reversal and distal filter) combined with blood aspiration

Longitudinal Changes in Cerebellar and Thalamic Spontaneous Neuronal Activity After Wide-Awake Surgery of Brain Tumors: a Resting-State fMRI Study.

Hypometabolism has been observed in the contralesional cerebellar hemisphere after various supratentorial cortical lesions. It is unknown whether the consequences of the dee- and deafferentation subsequent to wide-awake surgery for brain diffuse low-grade glioma can be assessed within remote and unresected subcortical structures such as the cerebellum or thalamus. To answer this question, we have conducted several regional analyses. More specifically, we have performed amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (neuronal activity magnitude) and regional homogeneity (local temporal correlations) a

A novel multimodal computational system using near-infrared spectroscopy to monitor cerebral oxygenation during assisted ventilation in CDH patients.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to create a computational simulator to serve as an early alert system for cerebral hypoxemia prior to the onset of clinical symptoms. METHODS: Neonates with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (Jan 2010-Dec 2014) were recruited to collect continuous measurements of cerebral tissue oxygen saturation (cStO2) using a near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) device (FORE-SIGHT®, CASMED). Clinicians were blinded to NIRS data and treated infants based on pre-established clinical protocols. Charts were reviewed retrospectively to identify clinical events of hypoxem

Clinical Usefulness of Somatosensory Evoked Potentials for Detection of Peripheral Nerve and Brachial Plexus Injury Secondary to Malpositioning in Microvascular Decompression.

PURPOSE: Neurologic injury secondary to positioning is a significant perioperative problem and a common cause of patient injury in the practice of surgery. Somatosensory evoked potentials' (SSEPs) monitoring has also been noted useful in evaluating upper extremity conduction changes related to positioning. The purpose of this article was to evaluate the effectiveness of intermittent monitoring of SSEPs, which detects peripheral nerve and brachial plexus injury caused by malpositioning during microvascular decompression (MVD). This article will also discuss the etiology and pathogenesis of nerv

A novel technique for quantitative bedside monitoring of neurovascular coupling.

BACKGROUND: There is no current method for continuous quantification of neurovascular coupling (NVC) in spontaneous brain activity. To fill this void, we propose a novel method to quantify NVC using electroencephalogram (EEG) and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) data. NEW METHOD: Since EEG and NIRS measure physiologic changes occurring at different time scales, we bring them into a common dynamical time frame (DTF). To achieve this, we partition both signals into one-second epochs and calculate the standard deviation of the EEG and the average value of the NIRS for each epoch. We then quanti

Visual change detection recruits auditory cortices in early deafness.

Although cross-modal recruitment of early sensory areas in deafness and blindness is well established, the constraints and limits of these plastic changes remain to be understood. In the case of human deafness, for instance, it is known that visual, tactile or visuo-tactile stimuli can elicit a response within the auditory cortices. Nonetheless, both the timing of these evoked responses and the functional contribution of cross-modally recruited areas remain to be ascertained. In the present study, we examined to what extent auditory cortices of deaf humans participate in high-order visual proc

Von Frey's hairs--a review of their technology and use--a novel automated von Frey device for improved testing for hyperalgesia.

We describe a device which allows the mechanical sensitivity of trigeminovascular sensory neurons to be monitored over extended time periods. The device can be used to stimulate either the skin or dura mater and consists of a solenoid-driven plunger to which are fixed interchangeable von Frey hairs. The solenoid can be attached to a stereotaxic carrier and mounted on a stereotaxic frame to allow precise positioning over the receptive field. The device is driven from the synchronization signals of a standard stimulator via TTL circuitry and a relay driver, to allow stimulation by a single or mu

Discharge characteristics of laryngeal single motor units during phonation in young and older adults and in persons with parkinson disease.

Discharge characteristics of laryngeal single motor units during phonation in young and older adults, and in persons with Parkinson disease. The rate and variability of the firing of single motor units in the laryngeal muscles of young and older nondisordered humans and people with idiopathic Parkinson disease (IPD) were determined during steady phonation and other laryngeal behaviors. Typical firing rates during phonation were approximately 24 s/s. The highest rate observed, during a cough, was 50 s/s. Decreases in the rate and increases in the variability of motor unit firing were observed i

Pre and post-glycerol special audiometric tests battery results in endolymphatic hydrops.

The glycerol test for endolymphatic hydrops was administered to 17 patients exhibiting classical symptoms of Meniere's disease. A complete battery of audiometric tests including the SISI, TTD (Rosenberg variation). ABLB, Sweep Frequency Bekesy, two tests of speech discrimination (Rush Hughes and Northwestern), and air and bone conduction thresholds were administered pre and post-glycerol ingestion in order to determine the effect of osmotic diuresis. Improvement in pure-tone sensitivity and speech discrimination scores were most often observed. Among the special audiometric tests only the SISI

Investigating molecular and hemodynamic effects of LSD in the human brain.

Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) is a potent psychedelic with increasing therapeutic interest, yet qualification of target engagement using in vivo neuroimaging has not yet been performed. Using simultaneous positron emission tomography-magnetic resonance imaging technology, we describe multiple brain actions of LSD in seven healthy volunteers blinded to LSD dose received. Here we show that LSD occupies 5-HT2AR with a high affinity and increases both global cerebral blood flow (CBF) and internal carotid artery flow. LSD also decreases global connectivity, which was negatively associated with c

Euphemisms modulate the neural processing of norm violations.

Euphemisms are commonly used in media to soften or obscure the severity of unethical or controversial actions. The present study explored the neural correlates underlying the processing of euphemized vignettes portraying norm violations. We recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) and collected behavioral severity ratings while participants (n = 38) read vignettes describing the same norm-violating events framed with euphemized, non-euphemized or control critical words. Behaviorally, participants rated norm violations as significantly less severe when described with euphemisms. At the neurophy

Synthesis, Radiochemistry, and Preclinical Assessment of the First GPR39 PET Imaging Agent.

GPR39 is a zinc-sensing G protein-coupled receptor with critical roles in neurophysiological and metabolic processes across brain, pancreas, gut, liver, and fat tissues. Activated by extracellular zinc ions, GPR39 is involved in neurodegenerative diseases including altered levels in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Quantifying GPR39 levels in vivo could significantly advance understanding of its role in various metabolic and disease processes, enabling drug development and treatment monitoring. Our study reports the synthesis, radiolabeling, and comprehensive preclinical evaluation of the first radio

Stable neuronal representations underlie cognitive resilience to Alzheimer's disease pathology.

INTRODUCTION: While Alzheimer's disease (AD) typically elicits progressive cognitive decline, some individuals with significant AD pathology maintain cognition. Understanding the neuronal underpinnings of such cognitive resilience would propel the development of interventions for delaying dementia. METHODS: We used Barnes Maze testing to identify cognitively resilient 13-month-old TgF344-AD rats (established AD) and their non-transgenic littermates, followed by Neuropixels recording from 8500 neurons during repeated somatosensory stimulation, and culminating in post mortem tau and amyloid loa

Anesthetic Challenges in Debulking Surgery of Massive Plexiform Neurofibroma With Neurofibromatosis Type 1: A Case Report of Intraoperative Generalized Involuntary Movements and Severe Blood Loss.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 is a multisystem genetic disorder commonly associated with plexiform neurofibromas, benign but highly vascular tumors that present significant perioperative challenges. Surgical debulking of plexiform neurofibromas is often associated with difficult anesthetic management due to tumor vascularity, hemorrhage risk, airway considerations, and the need for intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring. We report the case of a 48-year-old man with neurofibromatosis type 1 who underwent debulking of a large right thigh plexiform neurofibroma under general anesthesia without n

The Neuroscience of Marketing: Noninvasive Neuromarketing Methods for Understanding Consumer Choice and Priorities.

Neuromarketing and consumer neuroscience aim to enhance self-report and behavioral techniques by assessing neurophysiological and psychophysiological reactions that are frequently challenging to quantify. This study consolidates non-invasive tools frequently employed to examine consumer reactions to marketing stimuli, emphasizing the metrics each method assesses, the marketing inquiries it may reliably address, and the potential dangers of inference involved. We systematically compile evidence pertaining to constructs fundamental to consumer choice, including attention, affective arousal, memo
