Multicentre prospective study on the diagnostic and prognostic validity of malnutrition assessment tools in surgery.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition is a risk factor for postoperative morbidity but the optimal tool for the assessment of malnutrition is unclear. METHODS: This is a prospective multicentre cohort study. Consecutive patients undergoing elective or emergency major abdominal surgery for benign or malignant disease in 12 Greek hospitals between January 2022 and December 2023 were included. Patients unable to provide nutrition history and/or informed consent were excluded. Subjective global assessment (SGA) was used as a reference standard for malnutrition diagnosis. The Role of Diet in Women of Childbearing Age: Current Evidence Supporting Nutritional Recommendations.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Nutrition during the reproductive years shapes women's immediate health, fertility, pregnancy outcomes, and long-term offspring well-being. This position paper narratively synthesizes and critically appraises evidence on how dietary patterns, macro-/micronutrients, and supplementation influence women's health, female fertility, and reproductive outcomes, to inform practical recommendations. METHODS: We narratively reviewed recent reviews, cohort studies, clinical trials, and public-health guidance on macronutrients, key micronutrients, dietary patterns (with emphasis on

Nutrition-Based Paternal Influence on Gynecological Diseases in Female Offspring via Epigenetic Mechanisms.

Studies have widely indicated that the composition of maternal nutrition and diets might affect offspring health later in life. Studies on paternal contribution to the offspring's disease are relatively scarce but are an important subject to the field. Recent research has suggested that paternal factors influenced by nutrition have been implicated in the transgenerational heritage of health and diseases through epigenetic mechanisms. This review aims to explore the current state of knowledge on nutrition-based paternal impacts on gynecological disease through epigenetics, focusing on the trans

Two-year survival in patients with oncological disease with low muscle reserve, risk of sarcopenia and probable sarcopenia: A post hoc analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Sarcopenia is a clinical syndrome characterized by the loss of muscle mass quantity and quality. Our objective was to establish the prevalence of low muscle reserve, risk of sarcopenia (RIS) and probable sarcopenia (PS) and their associations with survival at two years in hospitalized patients with cancer. METHODS: This was a post hoc analysis of the Nutri-Score and Malnutrition Screening Tool (MST) operational characteristics. Adjusted calf circumference (CC) was used as an indicator of muscle reserve. The RIS was determined using cut-off points of the CC. PS was defined as low

Retrospective Analysis of the Impact of a Dietitian and the Canadian Nutrition Screening Tool in a Geriatric Oncology Clinic.

INTRODUCTION: Canada's aging population is leading to an increased number of older adults being diagnosed with cancer. This population faces unique challenges, including frailty, comorbidities, polypharmacy, and malnutrition, which can negatively affect treatment outcomes. The role of registered dietitians (RDs) in managing nutrition-related issues in this population is well-documented, but there is limited research on their integration into geriatric oncology clinics. We evaluated the impact of integrating a registered dietitian (RD) into the Older Adult with Cancer Clinic (OACC) at the Princ

Baby Food Pouches, Baby-Led Weaning, and Iron Status in New Zealand Infants: An Observational Study.

Iron deficiency in infants can impact development, and there are concerns that the use of baby food pouches and baby-led weaning may impair iron status. First Foods New Zealand (FFNZ) was an observational study of 625 New Zealand infants aged 6.9 to 10.1 months. Feeding methods were defined based on parental reports of infant feeding at "around 6 months of age": "frequent" baby food pouch use (five+ times per week) and "full baby-led weaning" (the infant primarily self-feeds). Iron status was assessed using a venepuncture blood sample. The estimated prevalence of suboptimal iron status was 23%

Targeted metabolomic profiles of serum amino acids are independently correlated with malnutrition in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition is a common geriatric syndrome that is closely associated with adverse clinical outcomes and poses significant harm to older adults. Early assessment of nutritional status plays a crucial role in preventing and intervening in cases of malnutrition. However, there is currently a lack of measurable methods and biomarkers to evaluate malnutrition in older adults accurately. The aim of this study is to investigate the independent correlation between serum levels of amino acids and malnutrition in older adults, and to identify effective metabolomics biomarkers that can aid …

National Implementation of an Artificial Intelligence-Based Virtual Dietitian for Patients With Cancer.

PURPOSE: Nutritional status is an established driver of cancer outcomes, but there is an insufficient workforce of registered dietitians to meet patient needs for nutritional counseling. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) afford the opportunity to expand access to guideline-based nutritional support. METHODS: An AI-based nutrition assistant called Ina was developed on the basis of a learning data set of >100,000 expert-curated interventions, peer-reviewed literature, and clinical guidelines, and provides a conversational text message-based patient interface to guide dietar…

Animal-sourced foods improve child nutrition in Africa.

Child undernutrition remains a widespread public health problem in the Global South, especially in Africa. Childhood stunting-meaning linear growth retardation-is a comprehensive and commonly used indicator of chronic child undernutrition and is mostly the result of insufficient nutrient intake, among other factors. Previous research showed that the consumption of animal-sourced foods (ASF), including meat, dairy, eggs, and fish, is associated with lower rates of child stunting, but reliable evidence for Africa is scant. In Africa, average ASF consumption is low. We use representative panel da

Exploring the Association between Delirium and Malnutrition in COVID-19 Survivors: A Geriatric Perspective.

Older individuals face an elevated risk of developing geriatric syndromes when confronted with acute stressors like COVID-19. We assessed the connection between in-hospital delirium, malnutrition, and frailty in a cohort of COVID-19 survivors. Patients aged ≥65, hospitalized in a tertiary hospital in Milan for SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia, were enrolled and screened for in-hospital delirium with the 4 'A's Test (4AT) performed twice daily (morning and evening) during hospital stay. Malnutrition was assessed with the malnutrition universal screening tool (MUST) at hospital admission and with the mini-n

Sarcopenia is associated with the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index in elderly patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus.

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: Diabetes and sarcopenia have a two-way relationship with each other with advanced age. Additionally, malnutrition is correlated with a higher risk of sarcopenia in elderly patients. This study evaluated the association between sarcopenia and geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI) in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus aged ≥60 years were recruited from June 2018 to August 2020. This study analyzed 234 patients, who completed a physical performance test required for the diagnosis of sarcopenia. To inv

Low selenium intake is associated with postpartum weight retention in Chinese women and impaired physical development of their offspring.

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between daily Se intake and postpartum weight retention (PPWR) among Chinese lactating women, and the impact of their Se nutritional status on infants' physical development. Se contents in breast milk and plasma collected from 264 lactating Chinese women at the 42nd day postpartum were analysed with inductively coupled plasma MS. Daily Se intake was calculated based on plasma Se concentration. The dietary data of 24-h records on three consecutive days were collected. Infant growth status was evaluated with WHO standards by Z-scores. Line…

Scurvy may occur even in children with no underlying risk factors: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Since ancient times, scurvy has been considered one of the most fearsome nutritional deficiency diseases. In modern developed countries, this condition has become very rare and is only occasionally encountered, especially in the pediatric population. Underlying medical conditions, such as neuropsychiatric disorders, anorexia nervosa, celiac disease, Crohn disease, hemodialysis, and severe allergies to food products may enhance the risk of developing scurvy. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of an otherwise healthy 3-year-old white boy who developed scurvy due to a selective re

Rehabilitation nutrition in pressure ulcer management with type 2 diabetes: a case report.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Severe infection, inadequate food intake, and pressure ulcers in patients with type 2 diabetes can result in malnutrition. We describe a case in which rehabilitation nutrition was effective for treat-ing a pressure ulcer in a malnourished patient with type 2 diabetes. METHODS AND RESULTS: A 58-year-old man with type 2 diabetes was diagnosed with hidradenitis suppurativa on the left buttock and thigh and a severe pres-sure ulcer on his left kneecap. Malnutrition was related to hypermetabolism caused by chronic hidradenitis suppu-rativa and inadequate protein-energy i

Parenteral nutrition for preterm infants: Issues and strategy.

Due to transient gut immaturity, most very preterm infants receive parenteral nutrition (PN) in the first few weeks of life. Yet providing enough protein and energy to sustain optimal growth in such infants remains a challenge. Extrauterine growth restriction is frequently observed in very preterm infants at the time of discharge from hospital, and has been found to be associated with later impaired neurodevelopment. A few recent randomized trials suggest that intensified PN can improve early growth; whether or not such early PN improves long-term neurological outcome is still unclear. Several

Tailoring nutrition therapy to illness and recovery.

Without doubt, in medicine as in life, one size does not fit all. We do not administer the same drug or dose to every patient at all times, so why then would we live under the illusion that we should give the same nutrition at all times in the continuum of critical illness? We have long lived under the assumption that critical illness and trauma lead to a consistent early increase in metabolic/caloric need, the so-called "hypermetabolism" of critical illness. What if this is incorrect? Recent data indicate that early underfeeding of calories (trophic feeding) may have benefits and may require

Diet-borne systemic inflammation is associated with prevalent tooth loss.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The deleterious effect of cariogenic dietary patterns on tooth loss is well characterized, but the contribution of diet-borne systemic inflammation to loss of teeth remains uncharted. Recent efforts have unveiled a protective role of single nutrients to periodontal health. However, the assessment of overall diet as a modifiable risk factor for oral health remains elusive. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the association between diet-borne systemic inflammation and tooth loss in a representative sample of the US adult non-institutionalized population. METHODS: A cro

Full predicted energy from nutrition and the effect on mortality and infectious complications in critically ill adults: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis of parallel randomised controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Whilst nutrition is vital to survival in health, the precise role of nutrition during critical illness is controversial. More specifically, the exact amount of energy that is required during critical illness to optimally influence clinical outcomes remains unknown. The aim of this systematic literature review and meta-analysis is to evaluate the clinical effects of optimising nutrition to critically ill adult patients, such that the entire predicted amount of energy that the patient requires is delivered, on mortality and other important outcomes. METHODS: A systematic literature

Micronutrient intakes and potential inadequacies of community-dwelling older adults: a systematic review.

Micronutrient deficiencies and low dietary intakes among community-dwelling older adults are associated with functional decline, frailty and difficulties with independent living. As such, studies that seek to understand the types and magnitude of potential dietary inadequacies might be beneficial for guiding future interventions. We carried out a systematic review following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement. Observational cohort and longitudinal studies presenting the habitual dietary intakes of older adults (≥65 years) were included. Sex-specific
