Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a heritable disease, which results from an abnormal amount or structure of Type I collagen. Bisphosphonates, a class of synthetic antiresorptive drugs, used in osteoporosis management, are also used to decrease fracture incidence and improve quality of life in children with OI. Patients with short, traumatic, below-the-knee amputations (BKAs) frequently function as if they have knee disarticulations. The goal of this study was to evaluate the results in patients who had lengthening of their BKA stumps to improved prosthesis fit and increase ambulation. Three patients with traumatic BKAs, who were left with insufficient stumps for proper prosthesis wear, have had their stumps lengthened by Ilizarov's technique of distraction osteogenesis. Seven patients are described, six with severe osteoporosis and the seventh with osteogenesis imperfecta with moderate osteoporosis. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of the ossification of the ligamenta flava (OLF) among skeletal remains from Poland.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 124 skeletons aged 25 years and older were analyzed. The presence and size of OLF were observed macroscopically. OLF was recorded at the cranial and caudal attachment sites of each vertebra. The following factors were analyzed: age at death, sex, and presence of other spondyloarthropathies.

The development of the vertebral column has been studied extensively in modern amniotes, yet many aspects of its evolutionary history remain enigmatic.
