Preliminary development of a measure of parental behavioral responses to everyday pains in young children: the PREP.

INTRODUCTION: Everyday pains are experienced frequently by young children. Parent responses shape how young children learn about and experience pain. However, research on everyday pains in toddlers and preschoolers is scarce, and no self-report measures of parent responses to their child's pain exist for this age group. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to develop a preliminary self-report measure of parent behavioral responses to everyday pains in the toddler and preschool years (the PREP) and examine its relationship with child age, sex, and parent and child distress. METHODS: It

Parent-Reported Academic Outcomes After a Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in the Pediatric Population.

BACKGROUND: Millions of children are diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury (TBI) each year, most being mild TBI (mTBI). The effect of mTBIs on academic performance is of significant importance. We investigate mTBI's impact on parent-reported academic outcomes in school-aged pediatric participants. METHODS: This cross-sectional survey study queried parents (N = 285) regarding letter grade performance and the presence or absence of academic accommodations before and after an mTBI, including complicated mTBI (c-mTBI, or mTBI with radiographic abnormality). RESULTS: We found a parent-reported

'Not a goal, but a given': Neonatal care participation through parents' perspective, a cross-sectional study.

AIM: To explore parents' perspectives regarding participation in neonatal care, with focus on the family integrated care (FICare) model utilised as a tool to enhance parent-infant closeness. Additionally, we describe experiences in different architectural settings. METHODS: An online survey, categorised by four FICare pillars, was distributed through social media to parents of newborns hospitalised to Dutch neonatal wards between 2015 and 2020. Quantitative findings were summarised using descriptive statistics, while open-ended responses were thematically analysed. RESULTS: Among the 344 res

Conceptualisation of violence and discipline among students, teachers, and parents in Nyarugusu Refugee Camp, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Little academic research has been conducted on how people conceptualise 'violence' and 'discipline', especially in humanitarian settings. This may limit the transferability of violence prevention interventions. This paper examines the understanding of violence and discipline concepts among students, teachers, and parents in the Nyarugusu Refugee Camp in Tanzania. METHODS: A qualitative study was undertaken as part of the larger trial testing the effectiveness of the EmpaTeach intervention to prevent physical violence from teachers to students implemented in 27 schools in Nyarugusu

APIS: an updated parentage assignment software managing triploids induced from diploid parents.

In aquaculture, sterile triploids are commonly used for production as sterility gives them potential gains in growth, yields, and quality. However, they cannot be reproduced, and DNA parentage assignment to their diploid or tetraploid parents is required to estimate breeding values for triploid phenotypes. No publicly available software has the ability to assign triploids to their parents. Here, we updated the R package APIS to support triploids induced from diploid parents. First, we created new exclusion and likelihood tables that account for the double allelic contribution of the dam and th

Parents of children with clubfoot are known to undergo a range of negative emotions. The objective of this study was to identify the prevalence of depression and the factors associated with depression in parents of children with idiopathic CTEV. Associations of Appetitive Traits and Parental Feeding Style With Diet Quality During Early Childhood.

BACKGROUND: Appetitive traits and parent feeding styles are associated with body mass index in children, yet their associations with child diet quality are unclear. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to examine relations of appetitive traits and parental feeding style with diet quality in 3.5-year-old children. DESIGN: The study was a secondary, cross-sectional analysis of data from Sprouts, a follow-up study of the Pregnancy Eating Attributes Study (PEAS). Birthing parents completed the Child Eating Behavior Questionnaire, Caregiver's Feeding Styles Questionnaire, and proxy 24-hour dietary recall

LBTQ parents' needs for support postpartum following a complicated birth: A matter of reproductive justice.

LBTQ people have increased risks of complications during birth, risks potentially driven by minority stress and increased levels of mental illness and fear of childbirth. With the aim of exploring reproductive injustices in postpartum care for LBTQ people, we analyzed qualitative interviews where 22 LBTQ birth and non-birth parents shared their experiences of support needs during the postpartum period after births where complications had arisen. Results point to the importance of providing an LBTQ safe space, which includes the need to feel safe regarding one's gender or sexual identity, by av

Incidence of Parental Requests to Discontinue Growth-Friendly Surgical Lengthening for Early Onset Scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: The STOP questionnaire was developed to document reasons for discontinuation of growth-friendly (GF) treatment in early onset scoliosis (EOS). This study investigated the incidence of parental request (PR) on the STOP questionnaire and compared clinical information and Early Onset Scoliosis 24-Item Questionnaire (EOSQ-24) scores of PR patients with those whose parents did not request discontinuation (non-parent request [NPR]). MATERIALS AND METHODS: An international pediatric spine registry was queried for EOS patients with STOP questionnaires completed by their surgeon. Age at di

Parent decisional regret regarding neonatal circumcision in an American outpatient pediatric urology clinic.

INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND: Requests for circumcision revision are common in our American pediatric urology clinic. As parents are the surrogate decision maker for their child, there are several influences that can impact a parent's decision for or against circumcision. OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess parents' regret regarding their child's circumcision status and to correlate regret to factors that might have affected the original decision. STUDY DESIGN: From March 2023 to January 2024, we surveyed parents who brought their male child to our office for any reason, independent of circumcision st

Clinical phenotype of FOXP1 syndrome: parent-reported medical signs and symptoms in 40 individuals.

BACKGROUND: The first studies on patients with forkhead-box protein P1 (FOXP1) syndrome reported associated global neurodevelopmental delay, autism symptomatology, dysmorphic features and cardiac and urogenital malformations. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of congenital abnormalities in an unbiased cohort of patients with FOXP1 syndrome and to document rare complications. METHODS: Patients with FOXP1 syndrome were included, mostly diagnosed via whole-exome sequencing for neurodevelopmental delay. A parent-report questionnaire was used to assess medical signs and symptoms,
