Addressing non-communicable diseases and injuries through an equity lens: insights from the Cameroon non-communicable disease and injury (NCDI) Poverty Commission.

BACKGROUND: Non-communicable diseases and injuries (NCDIs) constitute a leading cause of premature mortality globally, disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). To curb the rising burden of NCDIs in Cameroon, the Ministry of Public Health established the National NCDI Poverty Commission to assess the burden of NCDIs, evaluate investments and expenditures related to NCDI services, and generate evidence to guide national policy formulation and resource prioritisation. METHODS: We synthesised data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 database and conducted a

Strategies to improve retention in care among people living with HIV at health facilities in Manaus, Brazil: insight from health care providers.

BACKGROUND: Retention in HIV care is a key component of the continuum of care and is essential for achieving the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets. In Manaus, Northern Brazil, despite advances in HIV treatment and prevention, loss to follow-up among PLHIV remains a significant barrier to viral suppression and epidemic control. The present research explored health care providers' perspectives on strategies to improve retention in care among people living with HIV (PLHIV) at referral health facilities in Manaus. METHODS: A qualitative cross-sectional study was conducted between November 2023 and October

Behavioral and clinical characteristics of persons receiving medical care for HIV infection - Medical Monitoring Project, United States, 2009.

PROBLEM: As of December 31, 2009, an estimated 864,748 persons were living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and six U.S.-dependent areas. Whereas HIV surveillance programs in the United States collect information about persons with a diagnosis of HIV infection, supplemental surveillance systems collect in-depth information about the behavioral and clinical characteristics of persons receiving outpatient medical care for HIV infection. These data are needed to reduce HIV-related morbidity and mortality and HIV transmission. REPO

Associated factors of modern contraceptive use among women infected with human immunodeficiency virus in Enemay District, Northwest Ethiopia: a facility-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The prevention of unplanned pregnancy among women infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is critical for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV. Of the prevention strategies, deployment of modern contraceptives is principal one. However, there were limited facts on utilization of modern contraceptives and associated factors among HIV infected women, in particular of resource-limited settings in Ethiopia. Hence, we aimed to quantify the proportion of modern contraceptive utilization and the possible related factors among women infected HIV. METHODS:

Understanding contraceptive use behaviours among women with disabilities in low-resource settings in Ghana: a qualitative study.

This qualitative study explores the contraceptive use behaviours among women with disabilities in low-resource settings in Ghana, a group whose reproductive health needs are often overlooked in mainstream family planning programmes. Sixteen women with visual, physical, and hearing impairments in Apam, Central Region, were purposively selected to participate in semi-structured in-depth interviews conducted in their preferred languages, including Ghanaian Sign Language. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to identify key patterns in the data, revealing four main themes: (1) pathways for acquiri

Perinatal HIV in Europe: Clinical Advances and Psychosocial Challenges-A Scoping Review.

Despite significant biomedical advances in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV, residual transmission and suboptimal maternal outcomes persist across Europe. The challenge is no longer primarily virological but structural: aggregated ART coverage indicators mask important discontinuities across the perinatal care pathway. This scoping review maps evidence on clinical and psychosocial dimensions of the perinatal HIV pathway among adult women living with HIV (WLHIV) in Europe, and identifies key gaps in their integration across the continuum of care. Following PRISMA-ScR

Utilization of non-pneumatic anti-shock garment for treating obstetric hemorrhage and associated factors among obstetric care providers in Ethiopia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The non-pneumatic anti-shock garment (NASG) is a life-saving device that can help to avoid delays and prevent further complications in the case of obstetric hemorrhage. Although there are many fragmented primary studies on the NASG utilization in Ethiopia, the pooled utilization rate is unknown. In addition, a disagreement was observed among those studies while reporting the associated factors. Therefore, this study was intended to determine the pooled level of NASG utilization and its associated factors among obstetric care providers in Ethiopia. METHODS: A total of 51 studies we

The impact of COVID-19 on the hot food takeaway planning regulatory environment: perspectives of local authority professionals in the North East of England.

AIMS: Planning regulations have been used to prevent the over-proliferation of hot food takeaways, minimising the impact of local obesogenic environments. To help mitigate the effects of lockdown, the UK government introduced temporary changes in March 2020 to Planning Regulations for England, allowing food retailers to open for takeaway services beyond 'ancillary' level without needing to apply for planning permission through permitted development rights (PDR). Businesses are required to notify their local authority (LA) when they implement PDRs. To better understand the impact of regulations

A Qualitative Study of Service Provision for Alcohol Related Health Issues in Mid to Later Life.

AIMS: Epidemiological surveys over the last 20 years show a steady increase in the amount of alcohol consumed by older age groups. Physiological changes and an increased likelihood of health problems and medication use make older people more likely than younger age groups to suffer negative consequences of alcohol consumption, often at lower levels. However, health services targeting excessive drinking tend to be aimed at younger age groups. The aim of this study was to gain an in-depth understanding of experiences of, and attitudes towards, support for alcohol related health issues in people

Emerging and reemerging infections. Progress and challenges in the subspecialty of infectious disease pathology.

Emerging and reemerging infections are attracting greater attention from the public health and medical communities. Pathologists and other physicians are increasingly aware of the importance of the subspecialty of infectious disease pathology as a tool for diagnosis, surveillance, and research of emerging infections. In this communication, we describe the role that infectious disease pathologists have played during the last 2 years in broadening our understanding of selected emerging infections, including such examples as new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and bovine spongiform encephalopat

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Barriers, Facilitators and Unmet Need Among Rural People Who Inject Drugs: A Qualitative Examination of Syringe Service Program Client Perspectives.

BACKGROUND: People who inject drugs (PWID) are at high risk for HIV infection, yet in rural areas PWID are understudied with respect to prevention strategies. Kentucky is notable for heavy rural HIV burden and increasing rates of new HIV diagnoses attributable to injection drug use. Despite high need and the strong evidence for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) as a gold-standard biomedical HIV prevention tool, scale up has been limited among PWID in Kentucky and elsewhere. This paper explores individual, environmental, and structural barriers and facilitators of PrEP care from the perspective o

Option B+ Program for the Prevention of Vertical Transmission of HIV: A Case Study in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Background: South Africa's National Department of Health adopted WHO's 2013 consolidated guidelines on ARVs for HIV treatment and prevention in 2015, including changes for Prevention from Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) through Option B+, aimed to reduce the HIV prevalence rate amongst women by placing them on lifelong treatment, irrespective of their CD4 count. As a result, these guidelines were implemented for the PMTCT program at Rahima Moosa Hospital. Little is known about the impact of these guidelines on the work of healthcare workers (HCWs) and no research had focused on how these

Sex-disaggregated data along the gendered health pathways: A review and analysis of global data on hypertension, diabetes, HIV, and AIDS.

BACKGROUND: Health data disaggregated by sex is vital for identifying the distribution of illness, and assessing risk exposures, service access, and utilization. Disaggregating data along a health pathway, i.e., the measurable continuum from risk factor exposure to final health outcome (death), and including disease prevalence and a three-step care cascade (diagnosis, treatment, and control), has the potential to provide a holistic and systematic source of information on sex- and gender-based health inequities and identify opportunities for more tailored interventions to reduce those inequitie
