Association between metabolic syndrome and the risk of colorectal cancer: a prospective study in China.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the correlation between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components on the incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) based on data from Jinchang Cohort. METHODS: This is a large prospective cohort study. Between 2011 and 2020, a total of 43 516 individuals from Jinchang Cohort were included for this study. Hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for CRC according to MetS were calculated with the Cox proportional hazard models. The restricted cubic spine models with four knots were conducted to fit the dose-response relationships. RESULTS: MetS was associate

[Application status and prospect of Mendelian randomization analysis in the study of prostate cancer pathogenesis].

Prostate cancer is the most common malignant tumor of male genitourinary system, its morbidity and mortality increase year by year, and has become a public health problem affecting male health. Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis has been widely used in epidemiological etiology inference in recent years. Compared with general observational studies, it avoids the interference of confounding factors and has clear causal sequence. The judgment of disease risk factors is more helpful for early intervention and clinical prevention and treatment of diseases. This paper reviewed the application sta

Evaluating Patient Tolerability for Urological Procedures Under Conscious Sedation: A Prospective Study.

OBJECTIVE: To prospectively evaluate patient-reported tolerability and surgical outcomes of urologic procedures with conscious sedation with or without local anesthesia. Administration of general or spinal anesthesia is associated with anesthetic-related complications, long wait times, and high costs. Using intravenous conscious sedation and/or local anesthesia is an emerging alternative for a myriad of urologic procedures. METHODS: Patients were enrolled from June-August 2021 at a tertiary care hospital. All procedures were completed using fentanyl, midazolam, or both with patient and proced

Effectiveness of Lactational Amenorrhea Method in Ethiopia: A Multi-Center Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Although the lactational amenorrhea method (LAM) is one of the most commonly used contraception methods during the first six months of a woman's postpartum period, there has been little research on its effectiveness in general and particularly in Ethiopia. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of LAM and the experiences of Ethiopian women who used it. METHODS: This was a multi-center prospective cohort study of postpartum women from five Ethiopian regions and one city administration. All pregnant women who gave birth in these randomly selected hospitals and f

A prospective longitudinal study of multidomain resilience among youths with and without maltreatment histories.

The majority of children with maltreatment histories do not go on to develop depression in their adolescent and adult years. These individuals are often identified as being "resilient", but this characterization may conceal difficulties that individuals with maltreatment histories might face in their interpersonal relationships, substance use, physical health, and/or socioeconomic outcomes in their later lives. This study examined how adolescents with maltreatment histories who exhibit low levels of depression function in other domains during their adult years. Longitudinal trajectories of dep

Safety and efficacy of mycophenolate in COVID-19: a nonrandomised prospective study in western India.

BACKGROUND: Antivirals and immunosuppressive agents are used with variable success in the treatment of COVID-19. Mycophenolate, an inhibitor of enzyme inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase, is an immunosuppressant used to prevent allograft rejection and other autoimmune diseases. Few laboratory studies have also reported antiviral properties of mycophenolate. The current study tried to assess the safety and efficacy of mycophenolate in patients hospitalised with COVID-19. METHODS: This was a prospective non-randomised open label study with the objective to assess the effect of addition of mycop

Predictors of shoulder dystocia at the time of operative vaginal delivery: a prospective cohort study.

Our aim was to identify factors associated with shoulder dystocia following an attempted operative vaginal delivery (aOVD) in a prospective cohort study and to evaluate whether these factors can be used to accurately predict shoulder dystocia by building a score of shoulder dystocia risk. This was a planned secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study of deliveries with aOVD at term from 2008-2013. Cases were defined as women with shoulder dystocia following an aOVD defined as a delivery that requires additional obstetric maneuvers following failure of gentle downward traction on the fetal

Association of laparoscopically-confirmed endometriosis with long COVID-19: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Women are at greater risk than men of developing chronic inflammatory conditions and "long COVID." However, few gynecologic health risk factors for long COVID-19 have been identified. Endometriosis is a common gynecologic disorder associated with chronic inflammation, immune dysregulation, and comorbid presentation with autoimmune and clotting disorders, all of which are pathophysiological mechanisms proposed for long COVID-19. Therefore, we hypothesized that women with a history of endometriosis may be at greater risk of developing long COVID-19. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to in

Association between Serum Testosterone and Aortic Valve Stenosis: A Prospective Cohort Study.

Serum testosterone is associated with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, which shares risk factors with aortic stenosis (AS). The association between serum testosterone and AS has not been previously investigated. We aimed to assess the prospective association between serum testosterone and risk of AS. Serum testosterone was determined at baseline using a radioimmunoassay kit in 2577 men aged 42-61 years recruited into the Kuopio Ischemic Heart Disease prospective cohort study. Hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (Cis) were estimated for AS. After a median follow-up of 27.2

Early Versus Late Initiation of Hydrocortisone in Patients With Septic Shock: A Prospective Study.

Introduction The optimal timing of corticosteroid initiation in septic shock patients is debatable. The Surviving Sepsis Campaign Guidelines recommended adding hydrocortisone to septic shock patients who require a vasopressor with a dose of norepinephrine ≥ 0.25 mcg/kg/min for at least four hours. Nevertheless, the best time to initiate hydrocortisone remains uncertain. Objective Assessing the impact of early (≤3 hours) versus late (>3 hours) initiation of hydrocortisone in septic patients. Methodology We compared the outcomes of septic shock patients who received hydrocortisone within three h

Paravertebral block vs. epidural block for percutaneous nephrolithotomy: A prospective, randomized study.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous nephrolithotripsy (PCNL) is the main method for urinary calculi. An anesthesia method with little effect on the blood circulation and which does not affect the postoperative activity of a patient is lacking. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of paravertebral nerve block (PNB) and epidural block (EPB) on quadriceps femoris muscle (QFM) strength in patients after PCNL. METHODS: 163 patients were separated into two groups: EPB (81) and PNB (82). Primary outcome parameters were QFM strength and range of motion (RoM) of the knee 1 h, 2 h, 3 h, and 24 h after anesthesia in

Outpatient orthognathic surgery: a prospective study of predictive factors for the length of hospital stays.

OBJECTIVES: Transitioning from non-outpatient orthognathic surgery to outpatient surgery is a new challenge, and it is essential to target the eligible population as precisely as possible. Several authors describe series of outpatient orthognathic surgery but do not include the reasons for their success or failure. The main aim of this study was to identify the factors significantly associated with "successful" outpatient orthognathic treatment. The secondary objective was to determine the factors significantly associated with prolonged hospital stays (≥ 2 nights). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A pr
