Psychiatric symptoms of adolescents reared in an orphanage in Ankara.

This study compared male adolescents in an orphanage with adolescents raised by their families in terms of psychiatric symptoms, using the Brief Symptom Inventory. Anxiety, depression, negative self, hostility, and Global Severity Index points were significantly higher in adolescents in the orphanage, although they did not reach pathological levels except with respect to hostility. Adolescents reared in orphanages scored high points for hostility, reaching pathological levels.

The impact of acne vulgaris on the quality of life and psychologic status in patients from upper Egypt.

BACKGROUND: Acne vulgaris is a common skin disease. Although neither life threatening nor physically debilitating, acne can severely affect social and psychologic functioning. Aim To study the overall impact of acne vulgaris on the quality of life and psychologic functioning of patients in Egypt. METHODS: One hundred and fifty patients with acne vulgaris and 50 healthy controls were evaluated. Acne patients were evaluated using the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), Culture Free Self-Esteem Inventory - Adult Version (CFSEI-AD), and Symptom Check List-90 - Revised (SCL-90-R). The controls

Factor structure of the developmental behavior checklist using confirmatory factor analysis of polytomous items.

The Developmental Behavior Checklist (DBC; Einfeld and Tonge, 1995) is a 95 item clinical screening checklist designed to assess the extent of behavioral and emotional disturbance in populations with intellectual deficit (ID). The DBC provides five principal-component derived subscales covering clinically relevant dimensions of psychopathology (i.e., Disruptive, Self-Absorbed, Communication Disturbance, Anxiety, and Social Relating). Validating these subscales for individual differences research requires examinations of the stability of this structure. This study begins a program of psychometr

Balancing and pointing tasks in dyslexic and control adults.

Developmental dyslexia may affect as much as 15% of the population, but the aetiology of the disorder is still being debated. The cerebellar theory of dyslexia proposes that cerebellar dysfunction could lead to the myriad of symptoms seen in dyslexic individuals, both in literacy and non-literacy domains. The cerebellum is crucial to the fluent performance of motor skills. Previous studies have found that dyslexic children are worse than control children on certain motor and balancing tasks. Here the performance of 28 dyslexic compared to 26 control adults on rapid pointing and balancing measu

Difference in the characteristics of subjective and objective sleepiness between narcolepsy and essential hypersomnia.

The present study was conducted to investigate the difference in the characteristics of daytime sleepiness between narcolepsy and essential hypersomnia and to identify the relationship between the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) in patients with these two disorders. Subjects consisted of 34 patients with essential hypersomnia (32.4 +/- 11.0 years old), 52 patients with narcolepsy (29.0 +/- 13.8 years old), and 45 control subjects (33.3 +/- 6.6 years old). The subjects completed the ESS and underwent MSLT following a regular sleep-wake schedule for over

Quantifying construct validity: two simple measures.

Construct validity is one of the most central concepts in psychology. Researchers generally establish the construct validity of a measure by correlating it with a number of other measures and arguing from the pattern of correlations that the measure is associated with these variables in theoretically predictable ways. This article presents 2 simple metrics for quantifying construct validity that provide effect size estimates indicating the extent to which the observed pattem of correlations in a convergent-discriminant validity matrix matches the theoretically predicted pattern of correlations

More power to them--statistically, that is: a commentary on Studdert-Kennedy, Mody, and Brady's criticism of a critique.

The power analysis discussed above establishes that it was most unlikely that Mody et al. (1997) could make a meaningful test of the Tallal hypothesis because of inadequate n and failure to specify the effect size. Note that this is a best-case scenario, because the power analysis assumes that the analysis of variance assumptions were within reasonable boundaries (e.g., as specified by Norton's study). This was clearly not the case. In summary, the Mody et al. study fails to meet minimal scientific criteria and makes no meaningful contribution to the literature.

How important is transient error in estimating reliability? Going beyond simulation studies.

This article introduces a procedure for estimating reliability in which equivalent halves of a given test are systematically created and then administered a few days apart so that transient error can be included in the error calculus. The procedure not only estimates complete reliability (taking into account both specific-factor error and transient error) but also can estimate partial reliability (taking into account only specific-factor error). Scores from 6 different measuring instruments were analyzed with the procedure. The results indicate that the magnitude of transient error in real dat

Do elderly people score better on cognitive tests at home?

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores of elderly family medicine patients are different when the test is administered at home rather than at the clinic. DESIGN: Cross-sectional comparison study. SETTING: University family practice unit in an urban area. PARTICIPANTS: A convenience sample of family practice clinic patients 70 years or older were referred to the study in the sequence seen at the clinic. Of 171 patients approached in person or by telephone, 77 agreed to participate. METHOD: The MMSE was administered at home and at the clinic on the same d

Somatic complaints in the German population.

The Freiburg Complaint List (Freiburger Beschwerdenliste FBL-R) is a self-report questionnaire which consists of 80 somatic complaints. A survey was conducted in 1993 and a sample of N = 2070, representative for the German adult population of 16 years and above, was obtained. Factor analysis, cluster analysis and item analysis were employed to develop nine scales: General Condition, Tiredness, Cardiovascular, Gastrointestinal, Head-Throat, Tenseness, Emotional Reactivity, Pain, Sensory and Total Score. Regression analyses revealed substantial effects of gender, age group, and, to a lesser exte

Depressive disorders: distinctions in children.

OBJECTIVE: The present study examined the distinctions between major depression without dysthymia, dysthymia without major depression, and double depression in child psychiatry inpatients. METHOD: Sixty-two child inpatients, with current diagnoses of major depression and/or dysthymia, and their mothers were interviewed with the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children-Epidemiologic Version and the Social Adjustment Inventory for Children and Adolescents. RESULTS: Results suggest that the relationship between the three disorders is complex and varies a

Temporal aspects of depth contrast.

Depth contrast is a contrasting change in the depth of a feature that results from changes in the disparities of other objects in the field of view, even though the disparity of the original feature remains unchanged. Depth contrast effects decrease during continuous viewing of the stimuli and may disappear altogether after several minutes unless the disparities of the inducing features change with time. This fading occurs whenever the inducing features have constant disparity, whether they are stationary or oscillating laterally. Depth contrast effects occur whenever the inducing features are

Dimensions of agoraphobia assessed by the Mobility Inventory.

Factor analyses of the When Accompanied and When Alone subscales of the Mobility Inventory (Chambless, Caputo, Jasin, Gracely & Williams, Behaviour Research and Therapy, 23, 35-44, 1985) were conducted using the responses of 177 panic disorder with agoraphobia patients. For both subscales a three-factor model was the most appropriate and accounted for approx. 60% of the variance in each case. The three factors were reliable and theoretically meaningful: fear of public places, enclosed spaces and open spaces. The fear of public places factor accounted for most of the explained variance and is d

Correlates of pathological gambling propensity in prison inmates.

The South Oaks Gambling Inventory was administered to 136 consecutively admitted inmates in a medium-security prison in Nevada. According to the criteria of the authors of this instrument, 22.79% of these inmates had some problem and 26% were probable pathological gamblers. Significant positive correlations with the F, depression, psychopathic deviate, psychasthenia, paranoia, schizophrenia, and Mac Andrew alcoholism scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) were found. Gambling score was negatively correlated with the Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices measure of int

The Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire in males at high and low risk for alcoholism.

Cloninger has proposed a tridimensional model as the basis for the classification of personality variants and has developed the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ) as an empirical test of this model. In this study, the TPQ was administered to two groups of young men. One group was comprised of nonalcoholic sons of male alcoholics; the other group consisted of nonalcoholic men with no family history of alcoholism. Since the sons of male alcoholics are considered to be at greater risk to develop alcoholism than the sons of nonalcoholics, it was hypothesized that the two groups would d

Divergent validity evidence for Eckblad and Chapman's Hypomanic Personality Scale.

Subsequent to final examinations, Eckblad and Chapman's Hypomanic Personality Scale was given to 115 students; the STAI and the Cognitive Interference Questionnaire also were administered. Analysis found that the Hypomanic Personality Scale shows divergence from the measures of anxiety and cognitive interference despite the fact that convergence has been found on other scales of hypomania. In addition, males scored significantly higher than females on the scale. There was no significant relation of the Hypomanic Scale with examination performance.

A review of screening instruments for assessing cognition and mental status in older adults.

Older adults in non-psychiatric acute and long-term care settings need to be screened routinely for cognitive function and mental status by clinicians and health care providers. Screening instruments increasingly are being used in order to evaluate programs, implement clinical decisions and conduct research. The purpose, scope and depth of needed assessment guides the selection of the screening instrument. This article critically reviews 11 screening instruments used to assess cognitive function and mental status in older adults: Dementia of the Alzheimer Type Inventory, Brief Cognitive Rating

Neuropsychological divergence of high-level autism and severe dyslexia.

The relationship between cognitive deficits in high-level autism and those in learning disabilities has received little attention. To determine whether high-functioning autistic patients and individuals with severe dyslexia display different cognitive characteristics, 10 nonretarded men (mean age 26 years) with infantile autism, residual state, were compared with 15 severely dyslexic men (mean age 22 years) and 25 matched controls on a neuropsychological test battery. The two clinical groups were dissociated by a reduced digit span seen in the dyslexics and by impaired problem-solving skills (
