BACKGROUND: Rectovaginal fistulae are a known complication of pelvic radiotherapy utilizing locally applied isotope implants. Most often, either permanent colostomy or reconstruction with a well-vascularized flap is necessary. Complex cytological and ultrasound study was conducted in 300 patients with thyroid pathology exposed to 5-250 cSv. Benign goiter changes and autoimmune thyroiditis were detected in 66.2% while malignant thyroidal nodules--in 3.7%. Benign and autoimmune changes alone were in 38%. Pathomorphological features of nodular changes and autoimmune thyroiditis patterns as well as their ultrasound representations were identified.

Local radiotherapy of a tumor is frequently applied in combination with chemotherapy or surgical measures. Possibly occurring toxicity must therefore be considered within the overall context. The radiosensitivity of the various organs is dependent on the sensitivity of the respective stem or mature end cells, and shows considerable differences within the individual cell systems. Apart from the application of prophylactic procedures, some radiation sequelae can be ameliorated by initiating specific measures (e.g. cosmetic products, drug treatment).

Surgical treatment with application of the modified technique of high colpocleisis according to Latsko was performed in 174 patients aged 26-72 with postradiation vesicovaginal fistulas. The latter developed 6 months to 26 years after radiotherapy. The operation resulted in restoration of the urinary bladder capacity and spontaneous urination.

A 62-year-old man with a large ciliochoroidal melanoma developed early-onset scleral necrosis with tumor extrusion within 1 month of epibulbar iodine I 125 plaque radiotherapy. The eye was enucleated. Pathologic study revealed nonmicrobial scleral necrosis with extrusion of histologically intact and necrotic uveal melanoma cells. The patient has been followed up for 15 months without clinical recurrence. We discuss possible mechanisms to explain the early development of scleral necrosis after plaque therapy in this patient.

PURPOSE: To report a patient who developed photic maculopathy after pterygium removal.
METHODS: A 27-year-old woman underwent pterygium removal with a conjunctival autograft after administration of retrobulbar anesthesia. A coaxial operating microscope was used, with an estimated retinal exposure of approximately 40 minutes.
RESULTS: On the first postoperative day, the patient noted a paracentral scotoma. A fluorescein angiogram on the fourth postoperative day documented a phototoxic lesion in the macula.

Radiation mucositis is characterized by erythema, pseudomembranes, and ulceration of mucosa in the irradiated field. We present two cases of oral mucosal changes in patients treated with radiotherapy in the head and neck region, which included mucosal erythema and ulceration outside of the radiated fields. One case was confirmed as herpes virus infection, and the other was diagnosed as Sweet's syndrome. When mucositis extends beyond the radiation fields, the clinician should consider other causes of mucosal inflammation and erythema in order to begin appropriate management.
