Two patients with nontoxic autonomously functioning thyroid nodules had transient hyperthyroidism after acute hemorrhagic infarction. Previously solid "hot" nodules were converted to cystic "cold" nodules. Aspiration confirmed the hemorrhagic nature of the process. There was marked regression in nodule size, marked reduction of nodular autonomous secretory activity (indicated by a change from a blunted to a normal response to thyrotropin-releasing hormone), and spontaneous recovery of function in the previously suppressed extranodular thyroid tissue. Migratory osteolysis is a recently recognized syndrome characterized by a migratory articular pain pattern of the lower extremities and associated radiographically with localized and reversible juxta-articular osteoporosis. Serial bone scans, both dynamic and static, appear to offer a new and more sensitive means for diagnosing and monitoring of this condition. The dynamic studies suggest that augmented osseous blood flow is responsible, at least in part, for increased radioactivity in clinically involved areas and presumably is mediating the osteoporotic process.

A single family is presented in which 2 of the 3 sibs and 3 of 9 first degree relatives had Crohn's disease. Two subjects with Crohn's disease had classical ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and HLA typing revealed HLA B27 in all 5 members of the immediate family. The value of quantitative sacroiliac scintigraphy (QSS) in clinical practice is demonstrated. Both patients with AS had evidence of currently active sacroiliac disease in association with radiological change. One symptomatic sib had QSS evidence of sacroiliitis without radiological abnormality.

The results of a 99mTc-DTPA study of vesicoureteral reflux in 51 children with recurrent urinary tract infections were compared with those of radiographic micturition cystourethrography. Reflux, shown by either of the two methods, was regarded as an indication of the disorder. Neither method was regarded as a standard reference method. Agreement between the two methods was obtained in 90 of 102 renal units, i.e., ureter and/or renal pelvis (88%). Statistical analysis performed on the remaining 12 cases showed that the two procedures usually gave similar results.

59 relatives with a family history of hereditary chemodectoma have been successfully screened by means of radionuclide scintiangiography. The findings showed a close correlation with selective roentgenangiography. 3 asymptomatic patients with chemodectoma were revealed by these methods without causing discomfort to the group involved.

A case of total superior vena cava obstruction and "hot spot" in the liver demonstrated by a radiocolloid liver scan in a case of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the anterior mediastinum, is presented. The study showed total obstruction of the superior vena cava and the presence of collateral circulation. The patient received radiation therapy, and a subsequent radiocolloid study showed relief of the obstruction and disappearance of the "hot spot."

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the diagnostic value (validity) of technetium-99m-pyridoxylideneglutamate cholescintigraphy (99mTc-PGC) in patients with and without cholecystitis and to compare its validity to those of oral cholecystography (OC) and ultrasonography (US). 99mTc-PGC was applied to 50 patients with acute, subacute, and/or chronic cholecystitis with cystic duct obstruction proven histologically and operatively, and also to 27 non-diseased volunteers and 43 patients with right upper quadrant abdominal pain who subsequently were proven free of gallbladder disease.

Six maintenance hemodialysis patients with dialysis dementia (severe mental deterioration, speech disturbances, apraxia, facial grimacing, and myoclonus) were studied.
