Associations between posttraumatic cognitions and cannabis cravings among trauma-exposed individuals using cannabis.

OBJECTIVE: Trauma-exposed individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms are at risk for problematic cannabis use. However, modifiable risk factors associated with cannabis use in this population are less clear. Posttraumatic cognitions (PTC; negative cognitions about the self, self-blame, and negative cognitions about the world) have recently been investigated as potential motivators for substance use, particularly to cope with distress, but extant research is limited. The current study tested whether PTC are associated with increased coping-oriented cannabis cravings using an

Measuring Exposure to Opioids Using Self-Reported Medication Use Data Versus General Practitioner Prescription Records in the UK Biobank Study.

PURPOSE: The ongoing global increase in opioid use necessitates studies examining long-term health impacts. Prospective cohorts frequently rely on self-reported medication use data which may be subject to several types of bias compared to more objective measurements. We evaluated the agreement between two opioid exposure measures in the UK Biobank (UKBB)-self-reported regular use and prescription-based indicators using linked general practitioner (GP) records. METHODS: Our analysis included 171 813 UKBB participants with linked prescription records. At baseline, participants reported medicati

Increased risky choice during forced abstinence from fentanyl on the cued rat gambling task.

RATIONALE: The use of illicit opioids has arguably never been more risky; street drug potency can be dangerously high, is often unknown to the consumer, and results in multiple daily fatalities worldwide. Furthermore, substance use disorder (SUD) is associated with increased maladaptive, risky decisions in laboratory-based gambling tasks. Animal studies can help determine whether this decision-making deficit is a cause or consequence of drug use. However, most experiments have only assessed psychostimulant drugs. OBJECTIVES: To assess differences in decision-making strategies both before, dur

Evaluation of self medication practices and prescription patterns in patients of chronic kidney disease: A cross-sectional, questionnaire based study.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacotherapy of chronic kidney disease (CKD) consists of prescribing myriad of drugs such as antihypertensives, antidiabetics, and phosphate binders to delay disease progression and control the comorbidities, resulting in inherent variability in prescriptions. In addition, tendency to self-medicate may further aggravate the condition. Hence, the present study was planned to assess self-medication practices and variability in prescription patterns in CKD patients. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study approved by the ethics committee was conducted in CKD pati

Interactions between impulsivity and MDPV self-administration in rats.

Synthetic cathinones, such as 3,4-methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV), are recreational drugs of abuse often identified in 'bath salts' preparations. Humans report compulsive patterns of bath salts use, and previous work suggests that a subset of rats develop unusually high levels of MDPV self-administration. This study aims to test the hypothesis that high levels of impulsivity (e.g., inability to withhold responding for a sucrose reward) will predispose rats to high levels of MDPV self-administration relative to rats with lower levels of impulsivity. The 1-choice serial reaction time task (1-C

Self-administered subcutaneous medroxyprogesterone acetate for improving contraceptive outcomes: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Subcutaneous depot medroxyprogesterone acetate is an easy-to-use injectable contraceptive. A trained person can administer it, including women through self-injection. The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess the effectiveness and safety of self-injection versus provider-administered subcutaneous depot medroxyprogesterone acetate for improving continuation of contraceptive use. METHODS: We searched for randomized controlled trials on November 1, 2020 in Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, Op

Lifestyle and socio-economic inequalities in diabetes prevalence in South Africa: A decomposition analysis.

BACKGROUND: Inequalities in diabetes are widespread and are exacerbated by differences in lifestyle. Many studies that have estimated inequalities in diabetes make use of self-reported diabetes which is often biased by differences in access to health care and diabetes awareness. This study adds to this literature by making use of a more objective standardised measure of diabetes in South Africa. The study estimates socio-economic inequalities in undiagnosed diabetes, diagnosed diabetes (self-reported), as well as total diabetes (undiagnosed diabetics + diagnosed diabetics). The study also exam

Importance of illness beliefs and self-efficacy for patients with coronary heart disease.

AIM: This paper is a report of a study to assess the association between coronary heart disease patients' illness beliefs and their self-efficacy 3 years after hospital discharge. BACKGROUND: Cardiac rehabilitation guidelines recommend that both the illness representation model and the concept of self-efficacy are relevant frameworks for developing effective psychological support, although little is known about what aspects of patients' illness beliefs influence their self-efficacy. METHOD: In a longitudinal prospective survey, consecutive patients with coronary heart disease were asked to c

Linker length-dependent morphologies in self-assembled structures of anthracene glucosides.

Anthracenemethyl glucosides, that possess ethylene glycol linkers connecting the glucoside with anthracene moiety, are studied herein. Koenigs-Knorr glycosylation of ethylene glycol-tethered anthracene with acetobromo glucose, followed by removal of the protecting groups, lead to the facile formation of the target glucosides. Aq. solutions of these anthracene glucosides readily undergo self-assembly, with critical aggregation concentration varying between 0.4 and 1 mM, depending on the linker, being ethylene-, di- and tetraethylene glycol, as assessed by photophysical evaluations. Circular dic

Needs of older people with intellectual disabilities: variables influencing inter-respondent (client vs staff) agreement.

Background: The importance of understanding the needs of older people with intellectual disabilities (IDs) is obvious, but the research available is limited. This study identifies the self-reported needs of older adults with IDs and compares them with staff reported needs regarding the same older adults with ID, therefore specifying and explaining agreements and disagreements. Method: The needs of 96 older adults with IDs were assessed through the Inventory of Identification of Needs (informant and self-report versions). Results: Both older people with IDs and staff reported quite diverse need

Prevalence, Pattern, and Factors Associated With Self-reported Disability Among the Bhutanese Population: A Secondary Data Analysis of Population and Housing Census.

We analyzed the Population and Health Census of Bhutan (PHCB) 2017 to assess the prevalence and pattern of self-reported disability among people aged ≥15 years and the associated factors. The PHCB 2017 used the Washington Group Short Set on Functioning questionnaire to assess the disability ("lot of difficulty" or "cannot do at all") in seeing, hearing, mobility, cognition, self-care, and communication. Of the 536 443 persons included in the analysis, 384 101(71.6%) were aged <45 years, 283 453(52.8%) were men, and 206 103(38.4%) were from the rural area. The prevalence of any self-reported di

Clinical, Sexual and Psychopathological Changes after Clitoral Reconstruction in a Type II Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting: A Case Report.

Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) is a health issue associated with serious negative psychological and health consequences. However, there is little literature on the impact of FGM/C on female sexuality, mental health and genital self- image after clitoral reconstructive surgery. Our aim was to assess sexual function, psychopathology and genital self-image in a type II FGM/C patient. The patient was assessed prior to FGM/C reconstructive surgery and at a 6-month follow-up. At follow- up, she reported an improvement in sexual function and a clear improvement of the psychopathological st

Metamemory in narcolepsy.

People with narcolepsy consistently report diminished memory function attributable to the disorder, however, objective evaluations of memory performance in this clinical group remain inconclusive. Previous evaluations of these subjective experiences have been primarily anecdotal with subjects required to provide global assessments of their memory function. The present study aimed to evaluate subjective assessments of memory dysfunction more extensively comparing responses by narcoleptics, subjects experiencing excessive daytime sleepiness, and controls, on the Metamemory in Adulthood (MIA) que

Morning yoga as an embodied regulatory practice: longitudinal changes in children's self-esteem and gratitude following participation in a school-based yoga program.

BACKGROUND: Self-esteem and gratitude are important psychological constructs associated with children's socio-emotional development and well-being. Previous studies have suggested that yoga may be associated with emotional regulation, attentional stability, and prosocial functioning. However, few studies have examined whether participation in school-based yoga programs is associated with changes in both self-esteem and gratitude among children. The present study aimed to examine longitudinal changes in self-esteem and gratitude following participation in a structured yoga program incorporating
