Factors Associated with Sleep Disruption and Fatigue in Thyroid Cancer Survivors.

Thyroid cancer survivors often experience worse quality of life than other cancer survivors, with fatigue and sleep disturbance being common contributors. In this prospective cohort from the ICaRe2 cancer registry, survivors completed the Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) at enrollment and follow-up, with univariate and multivariable analyses identifying factors associated with fatigue and sleep quality. Among 249 survivors (83% female, median age 42), 205 completed the BFI and 224 the PSQI. Most were low (57%) or intermediate (34%) risk or recurrence at d

Esketamine prevents postoperative sleep disturbance in patients with preoperative sleep disorders: a role for oral microbiota.

Patients with preexisting sleep disorders face a significantly increased risk of postoperative sleep disturbance (PSD) due to heightened sensitivity to surgical stress, anesthesia, and hospital-related environmental factors. There is a critical unmet need for effective prophylactic medications to prevent PSD, as current treatment options are limited and often inadequate. This study investigated the prophylactic effect of intraoperative esketamine (0.3 mg/kg/h) on PSD in 130 patients randomized into control and esketamine groups. Preoperative sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Slee

A comparison of the prevalence of dry mouth and other symptoms using two different versions of the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System on an inpatient palliative care unit.

BACKGROUND: Symptom assessment is key to effective symptom management and palliative care for patients with advanced cancer. Symptom prevalence and severity estimates vary widely, possibly dependent on the assessment tool used. Are symptoms specifically asked about or must the patients add them as additional symptoms? This study compared the prevalence and severity of patient-reported symptoms in two different versions of a multi-symptom assessment tool. In one version, three symptoms dry mouth, constipation, sleep problems were among those systematically assessed, while in the other, these sy

The sleep problems in individuals with Rett syndrome and their caregivers.

Sleep problems are common and impactful among individuals with Rett syndrome (RTT) and their caregivers. We examined the sleep patterns of 29 RTT patients and their primary caregivers using various assessment tools. The study found that a majority of the patients experienced sleep disturbances, with younger patients showing more sleep difficulties. Caregivers also reported poor sleep quality. The findings emphasize the need to address sleep problems in RTT management, as improving sleep quality can positively impact the well-being of individuals with RTT and their caregivers.

Nonrestorative Sleep and Type 2 Diabetes Incidence: The Aichi Workers' Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The term "nonrestorative sleep (NRS)" refers to an unrefreshed feeling at wake-up and is a domain of poor sleep quality. Previous research has demonstrated that NRS is linked to a number of diseases and adverse health outcomes, but less is known regarding the link between NRS and diabetes, particularly in Japanese. METHODS: We studied 3,665 middle-aged male participants of the Aichi Workers' Cohort Study who were followed-up from 2002 through 2019. Cox proportional hazards models estimated hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of incident type 2 diabetes mellitus

Alcohol use at midlife and in menopause: a narrative review.

Alcohol use disorder stands as a prevalent global issue, contributing to 140,000 annual deaths in the United States and causing numerous adverse health and socioeconomic outcomes. Despite being a natural physiological process, menopause often leads to troublesome symptoms that affect women's quality of life and exposes them to increased health risks. Our review delves into the intricate relationship between alcohol use disorder and the menopausal experience. We examine the impact of heightened alcohol consumption on the onset, severity, and burden of menopausal symptoms, particularly vasomotor

Sleep Disturbances During Childhood Can Predict Adult Alcohol Consumption: A Longitudinal Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances (SDs) in childhood can negatively impact behavioral and emotional control, which can lead to an increase in risky behaviors, such as substance use, including alcohol. METHODS: Data from 2,132 subjects who participated in the French TEMPO cohort from 1991 to 2018 were used. Sleep disturbances observed from ages 3 to 16 years defined our exposure. Alcohol use in adulthood was measured by alcohol consumption trajectories ascertained by using Group-Based Trajectory Modeling (GBTM) and constitutes our outcomes. The association between sleep disturbances in childhood

Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid in Rice Bran Extract Exerts Antistress Effects in Mouse Models with Depressive-Like Behaviors.

Various neurotransmitters are involved in regulating stress systems. In this study, we investigated the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid-rich rice bran extract (GRBe) in mice stressed by forced swimming and tail suspension tests. Four weeks of oral administration of GRBe (500-2000 mg/kg) reduced the levels of dopamine and corticosterone in the blood and brain while increasing serotonin levels. GRBe was involved not only in stress but also in regulating sleep and obesity-related genes. Modern society experiences diverse and tense lives because of urbanization and informatization, which cause

Dissecting the genetic and causal relationship between sleep-related traits and common brain disorders.

BACKGROUND: There is a profound connection between abnormal sleep patterns and brain disorders, suggesting a shared influential association. However, the shared genetic basis and potential causal relationships between sleep-related traits and brain disorders are yet to be fully elucidated. METHODS: Utilizing linkage disequilibrium score regression (LDSC) and bidirectional two-sample univariable Mendelian Randomization (UVMR) analyses with large-scale GWAS datasets, we investigated the genetic correlations and causal associations across six sleep traits and 24 prevalent brain disorders.
