Characterization of cognitive deficits in mice with an alternating hemiplegia-linked mutation.

Cognitive impairment is a prominent feature in a range of different movement disorders. Children with Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood are prone to developmental delay, with deficits in cognitive functioning becoming progressively more evident as they grow older. Heterozygous mutations of the ATP1A3 gene, encoding the Na+,K+-ATPase α3 subunit, have been identified as the primary cause of Alternating Hemiplegia. Heterozygous Myshkin mice have an amino acid change (I810N) in Na+,K+-ATPase α3 that is also found in Alternating Hemiplegia. To investigate whether Myshkin mice exhibit learning and

The association of living conditions and lifestyle factors with burden of cysts among neurocysticercosis patients in Ecuador.

We used baseline data on 154 symptomatic neurocysticercosis (NCC) patients in Ecuador to identify predictors of the burden of cysts. We ran logistic regression models with the burden of cysts as the outcome, defined as the number of cysts in the brain (1 vs >1), and having cysts in all 3 phases of evolution (active, transitional and calcifications) vs <3. These two outcomes are thought to be indicators of exposure dose and/or repeated exposure over time. The predictors examined were: living in a rural area, living on a dirt road, living in an adobe or wood house (vs brick/cement), no running w

The availability of neighborhood early care and education resources and the maltreatment of young children.

Using Census and administrative data for 2052 Census tracts in a large urban county, this study explores the relationship between several indicators of social organization and neighborhood rates of child maltreatment for 0- to 5-year-olds. Spatial regression models demonstrate that neighborhoods with a higher percentage of 3- and 4-year-olds attending preschool or nursery school, both locally and in adjacent neighborhoods, had lower rates of early maltreatment referrals and substantiations. Neighborhoods with more licensed child care spaces relative to child care need, as defined by the number

A population-based study of factors associated with early versus late stage oral cavity cancer diagnoses.

Oral cavity cancers can be detected early yet many are diagnosed with advanced disease. We assessed risk factors for advanced stage disease in a population-based study. Study population was all Ontario patients with anterior tongue or floor of mouth cancers diagnosed between 1991 and 2000 (n=2033). Data are from a retrospective chart review. Risk factors included: demographic characteristics, co-morbidity, precancerous lesions, dental status, smoking, alcohol use, and social marginalization. Multivariate regression analyses assessed independent associations while controlling for disease grade

Behavioural effects of neonatal lesions of the medial prefrontal cortex and subchronic pubertal treatment with phencyclidine of adult rats.

According to the neurodevelopmental hypothesis of schizophrenia, early brain damage renders the brain vulnerable to adverse effects during puberty, which precipitate the disease in young adults. Animal models can be used to test this hypothesis. We investigated the potentially independent or interactive effects of neonatal (postnatal day 7) excitotoxic lesions of the rat medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and subchronic pubertal phencyclidine (PCP)-treatment on adult rat behaviour. Sham-lesioned (vehicle-injection) and naive (unoperated) rats served as controls. On postnatal days 42-48 rats were

The impact of encouraging utterances by a human partner and a conversational robot on older adults' subjective well-being: a 6-week sustained interaction.

INTRODUCTION: In human-human communication, encouragement has been closely associated with subjective well-being (SWB). However, the long-term effects of encouragement in human-robot interaction remain unclear, particularly in comparison with human-delivered encouragement and across different encouragement strategy types. SWB comprises both affective well-being (AWB) and cognitive well-being (CWB). This study investigated whether sustained verbal encouragement from a human partner and a conversational robot could enhance older adults' SWB. METHODS: A two-phase design was adopted. First, a pre

Awareness of benign prostatic hyperplasia among males in the Riyadh region, KSA.

BACKGROUND: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a prevalent urological condition characterized by nonneoplastic enlargement of the prostate gland, leading to lower urinary tract symptoms such as nocturia, urine retention, and secondary urinary infections. METHODOLOGY: This cross-sectional study evaluates BPH awareness, risk factors, and management among males ≥19 years in Riyadh, using a validated questionnaire (n = 398). Data were collected using a structured questionnaire distributed to 398 participants. RESULTS: The results reveal a significant lack of awareness, with 61.3% of participa

Xylitol ameliorates ASD-like behavior in Chd8+/- mice via modulations of the gut microbiome, neurotransmitters, and dendritic spine morphology.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition with complex etiology involving gut-brain axis interactions. It remains elusive how prebiotics modulate this axis to alleviate ASD symptoms. This study aimed to investigate whether xylitol, a potential prebiotic, improves behavioral and neural deficits in Chd8+/- mice, a genetic model of ASD, and to explore the associated roles of the gut microbiome, neurotransmitters and synaptic morphology in these effects. We found that Chd8+/- mice exhibited disrupted gut microbiota and imbalanced levels of key neuromodulators including indol

[Re-evaluating ALS Medical Care in Japan: An International Comparison of Japan, Europe, the United States, and Canada-Insights from Mechanical Ventilation, Support for Social Participation, End-of-Life Care Options, Approved Drugs, and Precision Medicine].

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) care in Japan should be re-evaluated not simply as a matter of clinical choice but as a function of the public support system structure. In Japan, care is distinguished by a publicly funded model that supports home-based living and social participation following tracheostomy invasive ventilation. In contrast, Europe reflects a model centered on non-invasive ventilation and palliative care, and the United States reflects a system in which precision therapies are approved earlier but access remains highly unequal. Further, Canada reflects a model integrating m

Beyond motor impairment: investigating cognitive aspects of hereditary spastic paraplegia in a Greek case series.

Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) is a heterogeneous group of inherited disorders primarily characterized by progressive spasticity and lower extremity weakness. Traditionally associated with corticospinal tract dysfunction, HSP was long presumed to leave cognitive function largely unaffected. However, growing evidence increasingly recognizes cognitive impairment as a relevant feature of the condition. The primary aim of this study is to broaden the understanding of the cognitive profile in HSP, by examining cognitive impairments in a Greek cohort. A detailed neuropsychological assessment wa

Inadequate sleep is a risk factor for pediatric hypertension: the pathophysiologic and socioeconomic correlates.

The increasing prevalence of pediatric hypertension is concerning to our population because cardiovascular diseases are a leading cause of death in adults. Studies have shown that sleep disturbances in children, such as sleep fragmentation, increase blood pressure and lead to adult hypertension. However, the mechanisms by which this occurs are not fully understood. Most studies regarding sleep disturbances and hypertension are within adults, leaving the adolescent population understudied. In this review, we will describe the physiology of sleep, compare blood pressure variations between adults

Deinstitutionalization second time around - What can we learn from the psychiatric experience?

This historical opinion article draws parallels between mid-20th-century psychiatric deinstitutionalization and today's rapid expansion of home-based medical care. While psychiatric conditions differ fundamentally from acute medical illnesses, lessons from deinstitutionalization can inform current and future telemedicine models. Deinstitutionalization resulted from social, legal, and pharmaceutical advances but also produced unforeseen consequences, including increased incarceration, homelessness, medication misuse, and significant family burden. Similarly, shifting acute care to the home may

[Significance of dystonic tremor as a possible predictor of depression in patients with cervical dystonia].

Cervical dystonia (CD) is an urgent problem in neurology and healthcare in general. One of the CD manifestations is head tremor, which affects up to 60% of patients. Dystonic tremor is a spontaneous, oscillatory, rhythmic, and unstable patterned movement resulting from contractions of dystonic muscles, often exacerbated by an attempt to maintain the primary (normal) posture. Head tremor is a separate issue for patients diagnosed with CD. Physical difficulties and emotional experiences are different in CD patients with and without tremor. Patients with CD often face limitations in their daily l

Nesidioblastosis with delayed diagnosis and post-operative complications in a patient with complex psychiatric history.

Nesidioblastosis is a rare condition of organic persistent hyperinsulinaemic hypoglycaemia, with fewer than 100 cases since it was first recorded. However, an increasing prevalence suggests previous underdiagnosis due to poor knowledge and awareness. This case describes the presentation, clinical decision-making and unique challenges in diagnosis and care of a 21-year-old female with nesidioblastosis and extensive psychiatric comorbidities. She was repeatedly misdiagnosed until 2021, despite having presented to emergency departments with hypoglycaemic symptoms for over 7 years. Her symptoms we

The cognitive neuropsychiatry of Tourette syndrome.

Introduction: Converging evidence from both clinical and experimental studies has shown that Tourette syndrome (TS) is not a unitary condition, but a cluster of multiple phenotypes, which encompass both tics and specific behavioural and cognitive symptoms (mainly attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder). Methods: We conducted a narrative review of the recent literature on the cognitive neuropsychiatry of TS. Results: Although clinical research has shown that TS is not associated with cognitive deficits per se, the findings of recent studies have suggested

A Social Virtual Reality-Based Application for the Physical and Cognitive Training of the Elderly at Home.

Frailty is a clinical condition affecting the elderly population which results in an increased risk of falls. Previous studies demonstrated that falls prevention programs are effective, but they suffer from low adherence, especially when subjects have to train unsupervised in their homes. To try to improve treatment adherence, virtual reality and social media have been proposed as promising strategies for the increase of users' motivation and thus their willingness to practice. In the context of smart homes, this work presents SocialBike, a virtual reality-based application aimed at improving
