A randomized controlled trial of attention modification for social anxiety disorder.

Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) models implicate social threat cue vigilance (i.e., attentional biases) in symptom development and maintenance. A modified dot-probe protocol has been shown to reduce SAD symptoms, in some but not all studies, presumably by modifying an attentional bias. The current randomized controlled trial was designed to replicate and extend such research. Participants included treatment-seeking adults (n = 108; 58% women) who met diagnostic criteria for SAD. Participants were randomly assigned to a standard (i.e., control) or modified (i.e., active) dot-probe protocol condit

Intersection of Race/Ethnicity and Socioeconomic Status in Mortality After Breast Cancer.

We investigated social disparities in breast cancer (BC) mortality, leveraging data from the California Breast Cancer Survivorship Consortium. The associations of race/ethnicity, education, and neighborhood SES (nSES) with all-cause and BC-specific mortality were assessed among 9372 women with BC (diagnosed 1993-2007 in California with follow-up through 2010) from four racial/ethnic groups [African American, Asian American, Latina, and non-Latina (NL) White] using Cox proportional hazards models. Compared to NL White women with high-education/high-nSES, higher all-cause mortality was observed

Maternal and peer contact during the postnatal period participate in the normal development of maternal aggression, maternal behavior, and the behavioral response to novelty.

In the rat, social isolation during the early postnatal period disrupts the adult function of certain neuroendocrine and neurobehavioral sys … imuli impact on the development of neurobehavioral systems underlying aggressive and non-aggressive social interactions, whereas the normal development of maternal behavior and response to novelty requires maternally derived stimuli.

Your hand or mine? The extrastriate body area.

Visual images of our own and others' body parts can be highly similar, but the types of information we wish to extract from them are highly distinct. From our own body we wish to combine visual information with, at least, somatosensory, proprioceptive and motor information in order to guide our interpretation of sensory events and our actions upon the world. For others' bodies we only have visual information available, but from that we can derive much useful social information including their age, health, gender, emotional state and intentions. Consequently, a challenge for the brain is to sor

Behavioral alterations in rats prenatally exposed to valproic acid: animal model of autism.

Autism is a severe behavioral disorder characterized by pervasive impairments in social interactions, deficits in verbal and nonverbal communication, and stereotyped, repetitive patterns of behaviors and interests. Recently, a new rodent model of autism was created by exposure of rat fetuses to valproic acid (VPA) on the 12.5th day of gestation (VPA rats). The model has striking anatomical, pathological, and etiological similarities to human data; however, it has not been characterized behaviorally. In order to determine if VPA rats present behavioral aberrations observed in autism, their beha…

Study on the spatiotemporal distribution of Neolithic settlement clusters based on complex social evolution: Evidence from the Dongting Lake Basin.

Settlement aggregation has been a fundamental feature of human sedentary societies and provides important evidence for understanding changes in prehistoric social organization. However, previous studies of prehistoric settlement clusters have focused predominantly on spatial division and morphological structure, while comparatively little attention has been paid to their long-term spatiotemporal evolution at the watershed scale. This study investigates the spatiotemporal evolution of Neolithic settlement clusters in the Dongting Lake Basin and its implications for the development of social com

Development and Validation of the Digital Mentalizing Questionnaire: A Multidimensional Self-Report for Online Social Networks.

Digital interactions are increasingly central to human social life, yet existing measures of mentalizing-defined as the capacity to interpret one's own and others' mental states-are primarily designed for face-to-face contexts and fail to capture the unique cognitive-affective demands of online social networks. This research introduces the Digital Mentalizing Questionnaire (DMQ), the first multidimensional, theory-driven instrument specifically developed to assess mentalizing processes in digital environments. Across three studies (N1 = 278, N2 = 375, N3 = 341; participants in Studies 1, 2, an

What race means for health among Black Americans: How microaggressions shape self-efficacy and readiness for behavior change.

OBJECTIVES: Racial microaggressions in health care are an underexamined mechanism through which structural racism shapes health behavior change among Black Americans. Drawing on microaggression and ecological systems theory, this research examines how essentialist health messages and clinical microaggressions relate to self-efficacy and readiness for cardiovascular health behaviors. METHOD: Across two experimental mixed methods studies, a nationally representative sample of Black American adults viewed health messages varying in racial essentialism, from absent to ambiguous to explicit microa

Long-term care residents and staff perspectives on PARO using video-reflexive ethnography (VRE).

BACKGROUND: Residents with dementia in long-term care (LTC) often experience social isolation, loneliness, and distress. Socially assistive robots such as PARO, have been introduced to support psychosocial well-being, yet prior studies have typically examined resident or staff perspectives separately, limiting understanding of how such technologies function within everyday care practice. AIM: This study examined the relational, practical, and organizational feasibility of using the social robot PARO in a special care unit by exploring both residents' experiences and staff reflections. METHOD

Placental toxic metal concentrations and preterm birth: Modification by social stressors.

The placenta facilitates vital nutrient and gas exchange between mother and fetus. Metals such as cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and arsenic (As) have been associated with decreased placental vascularization, suboptimal invasion, and poorer birth outcomes. Although exposure to these chemical stressors often co-occurs with social stressors, few studies have evaluated the effects of these chemical stressors in the context of social stressors. Herein, we evaluate relationships between chemical stressors and birthweight, gestational age at delivery, and placental weight in the context of social stress. W

Behavioral Determinants of Lifestyle Modifications Following Metabolic Bariatric Surgery in a Culturally Specific Population: A Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Sustained healthy behaviors are critical for long-term success after metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS); however, patients from culturally distinct communities may face unique sociocultural and structural barriers to postoperative behavior change. We explored behavioral determinants of lifestyle modifications among women from the Arab society in Israel post-MBS. METHODS: Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 women who underwent MBS at a public university-affiliated medical center. Interviews explored participants' experiences of postoperative lifestyle adjus

Assessment of social cognition in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: protocol for a cross-sectional comparative study at Angers University Hospita.

INTRODUCTION: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder primarily affecting motor neurons. In addition to motor impairments, ALS frequently involves cognitive and behavioural disturbances, including deficits in social cognition, which can impact interpersonal interactions and decision-making. Despite increasing recognition of these impairments, existing assessment tools often rely on static stimuli, limiting their ecological validity. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This cross-sectional, single-centre study aims to assess social cognition abilities in patients with

Associations Between Intersecting Sociodemographic Characteristics and Device-Measured Physical Activity Among Children and Adolescents Living in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Despite robust evidence demonstrating sociodemographic characteristics may underly some of the disparities in physical activity observed among children and adolescents, the often-overlooked nexus of potential interactions between these characteristics warrants further exploration. This study explored the intersectionality of gender, race/ethnicity, parental education, and household income in relation to device-measured physical activity volume and intensity in a nationally representative sample of US children and adolescents. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from 3 cycles of the US N
