Vocal imitations and production learning by Australian musk ducks (Biziura lobata).

Acquiring vocalizations by learning them from other individuals is only known from a limited number of animal groups. For birds, oscine and some suboscine songbirds, parrots and hummingbirds demonstrate this ability. Here, we provide evidence for vocal learning in a member of a basal clade of the avian phylogeny: the Australian musk duck (Biziura lobata). A hand-reared individual imitated a slamming door and a human voice, and a female-reared individual imitated Pacific black duck quacks. These sounds have been described before, but were never analysed in any detail and went so far unnoticed b

A model-based quantification of startle reflex habituation in larval zebrafish.

Zebrafish is an established animal model for the reproduction and study of neurobiological pathogenesis of human neurological conditions. The 'startle reflex' in zebrafish larvae is an evolutionarily preserved defence response, manifesting as a quick body-bend in reaction to sudden sensory stimuli. Changes in startle reflex habituation characterise several neuropsychiatric disorders and hence represent an informative index of neurophysiological health. This study aimed at establishing a simple and reliable experimental protocol for the quantification of startle reflex response and habituation.

Patterns of adverse childhood experiences and mental health outcomes among American Indians with type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Extensive research demonstrates that Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are highly interconnected and have numerous health consequences well into adulthood. Yet, there is a dearth of focused research that examines ACEs and health inequities for American Indians (AIs). OBJECTIVE: To assesses the prevalence of ten types of childhood adversities, explore constellations of exposures, and examine whether there are differential risks of mental health outcomes according to sub-group classification. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Adult AIs with type 2 diabetes from five reservation-based tr

Reproducibility of Symptom Sequences Across Episodes of Recurrent Anaphylaxis.

BACKGROUND: Anaphylactic reactions may present with varying levels of severity, ranging from mild multisystem involvement to severe, and sometimes fatal, anaphylaxis. The severity of anaphylaxis is variable from one reaction to the next within the same individuals. OBJECTIVE: To compare the temporal sequence of symptoms within individuals and between individuals across multiple anaphylactic reactions. METHODS: Patients were evaluated for recurrent anaphylaxis in a tertiary care allergy clinic between 2012 and 2018. At each visit, patients were asked to record the temporal sequence in which s

Association between Viral Infections and Risk of Autistic Disorder: An Overview.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition of the central nervous system (CNS) that presents with severe communication problems, impairment of social interactions, and stereotypic behaviours. Emerging studies indicate possible associations between viral infections and neurodegenerative and neurobehavioural conditions including autism. Viral infection during critical periods of early in utero neurodevelopment may lead to increased risk of autism in the offspring. This review is aimed at highlighting the association between viral infections, including viruses similar to COV

The laminar profile of sleep spindles in humans.

Sleep spindles are functionally important NREM sleep EEG oscillations which are generated in thalamocortical, corticothalamic and possibly cortico-cortical circuits. Previous hypotheses suggested that slow and fast spindles or spindles with various spatial extent may be generated in different circuits with various cortical laminar innervation patterns. We used NREM sleep EEG data recorded from four human epileptic patients undergoing presurgical electrophysiological monitoring with subdural electrocorticographic grids (ECoG) and implanted laminar microelectrodes penetrating the cortex (IME). Cerebellar Watershed Injury in Children.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Focal signal abnormalities at the depth of the cerebellar fissures in children have recently been reported to represent a novel pattern of bottom-of-fissure dysplasia. We describe a series of patients with a similar distribution and appearance of cerebellar signal abnormality attributable to watershed injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-three children with MR imaging findings of focal T2 prolongation in the cerebellar gray matter and immediate subjacent white matter at the depth of the fissures were included. MR imaging examinations were qualitatively analyzed for th

Reproductive Health in Women with Physical Disability: A Conceptual Framework for the Development of New Patient-Reported Outcome Measures.

Background: Barriers in the built environment, enduring stereotypes and biases, and limited disability competency of health care providers compromise access to and quality of reproductive health care for women with physical disabilities. One way to improve our understanding of critical factors that drive reproductive health inequity and its impact on access to care is to use patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) that capture relevant and meaningful information about experience. In this study, we developed a conceptual framework as the foundation for relevant and clinically meaningful patie

Common neuronal mechanisms underlying tics and hyperactivity.

Tourette syndrome (TS) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are two neurodevelopmental hyper-behavioral disorders that are highly comorbid. The source of this comorbidity and the neuronal mechanisms underlying these disorders are still unclear. We examined the neuronal activity of freely behaving rats before and after striatal disinhibition, to reveal the similar and distinct neuronal components underlying the mechanisms of TS-like and ADHD-like symptom expression. Focal disinhibition induced motor tics, locomotor hyperactivity or a comorbid effect depending on the location of t

Regulatory effects of Ningdong granule on microglia-mediated neuroinflammation in a rat model of Tourette's syndrome.

Tourette's syndrome (TS) is an inherited neurologic disorder characterized by involuntary stereotyped motor and vocal tics. Its pathogenesis is still unclear and its treatment remains limited. Recent research has suggested the involvement of immune mechanisms in the pathophysiology of TS. Microglia are the brain's resident innate immune cells. They can mediate neuroinflammation and regulate brain development and homeostasis. A traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Ningdong granule (NDG), has been found to be efficacious in the treatment of TS while causing few adverse reactions. In the current s

A team science approach to discover novel targets for infantile spasms (IS).

Infantile spasms (IS) is a devastating epilepsy syndrome that typically begins in the first year of life. Symptoms consist of stereotypical spasms, developmental delay, and electroencephalogram (EEG) that may demonstrate Hypsarhythmia. Current therapeutic approaches are not always effective, and there is no reliable way to predict which patient will respond to therapy. Given this disorder's complexity and the potential impact of a disease-modifying approach, Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy (CURE) employed a "team science" approach to advance the understanding of IS pathology and explo

Dynamic Representation of Taste-Related Decisions in the Gustatory Insular Cortex of Mice.

Research over the past decade has established the gustatory insular cortex (GC) as a model for studying how primary sensory cortices integrate sensory, affective, and cognitive signals. This integration occurs through time-varying patterns of neural activity. Selective silencing of GC activity during specific temporal windows provided evidence for GC's role in mediating taste palatability and expectation. Recent results also suggest that this area may play a role in decision making. However, existing data are limited to GC involvement in controlling the timing of stereotyped, orofacial reactio

Towards More Sustainable Diets-Attitudes, Opportunities and Barriers to Fostering Pulse Consumption in Polish Cities.

Despite the evidence-based health benefits of pulses and their significant role in sustainable diets, consumption remains at a very low level in highly developed countries. In an attempt to fill in the knowledge gaps on factors influencing this phenomenon, a study aimed at identifying attitudes, incentives and barriers to pulse consumption was carried out in a sample of 1027 Polish urban employees aged 25-40 years. The sample (quota type) was representative in terms of age and gender. Exploratory classifications using Kohonen neural networks were performed to define profiles of participants fo

Dissecting the Tectal Output Channels for Orienting and Defense Responses.

Electrical stimulation and lesion experiments in 1980's suggested that the crossed descending pathway from the deeper layers of superior colliculus (SCd) controls orienting responses, while the uncrossed pathway mediates defense-like behavior. To overcome the limitation of these classical studies and explicitly dissect the structure and function of these two pathways, we performed selective optogenetic activation of each pathway in male mice with channelrhodopsin 2 (ChR2) expression by Cre driver using double viral vector techniques. Brief photostimulation of the crossed pathway evoked short l

The Chronic Treatment With 5-HT2A Receptor Agonists Affects the Behavior and the BDNF System in Mice.

Serotonin 5-HT2A receptors and the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) are involved in the pathophysiology and treatment of many psychiatric diseases. However, the interaction between 5-HT2A and BDNF is still poorly understood. In the present paper, the effects of chronic treatment with mixed 5-HT2A/2C receptor agonist DOI, highly selective 5-HT2A agonists TCB-2 and 25CN-NBOH on behavior and the BDNF system have been investigated. Chronic treatment of males of C57Bl/6 mice with DOI, TCB-2 and 25CN-NBOH (1 mg/kg, i.p., 14 days) resulted in desensitization of 5-HT2A receptors. Treatment wit

Eye-head coordination and dynamic visual scanning as indicators of visuo-cognitive demands in driving simulator.

Driving is an everyday task involving a complex interaction between visual and cognitive processes. As such, an increase in the cognitive and/or visual demands can lead to a mental overload which can be detrimental for driving safety. Compiling evidence suggest that eye and head movements are relevant indicators of visuo-cognitive demands and attention allocation. This study aims to investigate the effects of visual degradation on eye-head coordination as well as visual scanning behavior during a highly demanding task in a driving simulator. A total of 21 emmetropic participants (21 to 34 year

Stigma Experienced by Transgender Women of Color in Their Dating and Romantic Relationships: Implications for Gender-based Violence Prevention Programs.

Although transgender women of color, specifically Black and Latina experience gender-based violence in a variety of contexts, one of the most consistently reported is from a dating or romantic partner. This qualitative study sought to understand the manifestations and consequences of stigma experienced by transgender women of color in their dating or romantic relationships. Between January and February 2019, we purposively recruited 33 transgender women of color to participate in five focus group discussions and complete a brief survey. We employed both inductive and deductive approaches to co

Enhancing Psychological Sexual Health of People With Spinal Cord Injury and Their Partners in an Italian Unipolar Spinal Unit: A Pilot Data Study.

Like the slogan of the American Consortium for Spinal Cord Medicine says, "No injury, no matter how serious, can take away your ability to have a relationship, experience love, and experience the attraction between two people." However, people with spinal cord injury (SCI) have to fight with their own and societal attitudes and stereotypes that limit sexuality to the physiological functions of genitalia, phallocentric primacy of sexual pleasure, and sexual attractiveness of perfect bodies. The scope of the present study is to evaluate the impacts of a psychoeducational intervention in a person
