BACKGROUND: Not much is known about the risk factors of major depressive disorder (MDD) in HIV/AIDS in the African socio-cultural context. Therefore a study was undertaken to examine the prevalence and risk factors of MDD in HIV/AIDS in semi-urban Uganda.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was undertaken among 618 respondents attending two HIV clinics in Uganda.
RESULTS: Prevalence of MDD was 8.1%. Factors associated with MDD at univariate analysis only were female gender, family history of mental illness, negative coping style, alcohol dependency disorder, food insecurity and stress; not asso

PURPOSE: Mental health is a significant problem following exposure to a traumatic event. This study aimed to examine quarantine-related experiences, traumatic stress, and coping strategies among adults quarantined in Saudi Arabia due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) exposure or travel history.
METHODS: Individuals aged ≥ 18 years who were quarantined in Saudi Arabia due to COVID-19 exposure or travel history were included. We used a sequential mixed methods design, using an online survey followed by in-depth individual telephonic interviews. The Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) was

Childhood abuse (CA) is a prevalent global health concern, increasing the risk of negative mental health outcomes later in life. In the literature, CA is commonly defined as physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, as well as neglect. Several mental disorders have been associated with CA, including depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and post-traumatic stress disorder, along with an increased risk of suicide. It is thought that traumatic life events occurring during childhood and adolescence may have a significant impact on essential brain functions, which may persist throughout adultho

Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) compromise maternal and child well-being and may be influenced by traumatic experiences across the life course. A potent and common form of trauma is childhood maltreatment, but its specific impact on PMADs is not well understood. A systematic review was undertaken to synthesize empirical literature on the relationship between maternal histories of childhood maltreatment and PMADs. Of the 876 citations retrieved, 35 reports from a total of 26,239 participants met inclusion criteria, documenting substantial rates of childhood maltreatment and PMADs.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severe anxiety disorder that affects women more than men. About 30% of patients suffering from PTSD develop the disorder by witnessing a traumatic event happen to someone else. However, as the focus has remained on those directly experiencing the traumatic event, whether indirectly acquired fear memories that underlie PTSD have the same molecular signature as those that are directly acquired remains unknown. Here, using a rodent indirect fear learning paradigm where one rat (observer) watches another rat (demonstrator) associate an auditory cue with f

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) during pregnancy and postpartum (i.e., perinatal PTSD) negatively affects maternal and neonatal health. Gold-standard PTSD interventions often overlook the unique features of complex trauma exposure during the perinatal period. Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET), a manualized, evidence-based treatment for trauma disorders, shows promise in addressing PTSD among perinatal populations but warrants further real-world, clinical investigation. This case study demonstrates how NET can be used to address multiple traumatic events that may occur during pregnancy and

We provide a systematic, evidence-based medicine (EBM) review of the field of electrophysiology in the anxiety disorders. Presently, electrophysiological studies of anxiety focus primarily on etiological aspects of brain dysfunction. The review highlights many functional similarities across studies, but also identifies patterns that clearly differentiate disorder classifications. Such measures offer clinical utility as reliable and objective indicators of brain dysfunction in individuals and indicate potential as biomarkers for the improvement of diagnostic specificity and for informing treatm

It has been suggested that neurotic patients engage in 'emotional reasoning', i.e. draw invalid conclusions about a situation on the basis of their subjective emotional response. The present experiment investigated whether anxiety patients infer danger on the basis of their anxious response, whereas normals infer danger only on the basis of objective information. Four groups of anxiety patients (52 spider phobics, 41 panic patients, 38 social phobics, and 31 other anxiety patients) and 24 normal controls made ratings of the danger they perceived in scripts in which information about objective

Advanced age is not, per se, an indication for a different treatment approach, although certain modifications in the treatment plan are required. Recognition and management of anxiety disorders in the elderly must be prompt to interrupt the vicious cycle of anxiety-depression, physical illness, and other stresses.

Intestinal infectious diseases (IIDs) are among the most common diseases and are prevalent worldwide. IIDs are also one of the major disease groups with the highest incidence worldwide, especially among children and older adults. We observed a higher probability of IIDs in patients from the psychiatric department of Tri-Service General Hospital. Therefore, our objective was to investigate if there is an association between IIDs and the risk of developing psychiatric disorders. This nationwide population-based study used the database of the National Health Insurance (NHI) program in Taiwan. The

The literature has identified that a sense of coherence plays a protective role in the relationship between adverse events and mental health. The current study examines the role of a sense of coherence (SOC) in the relationship between fear of COVID-19, perceived stress, and dimensions of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Participants (n = 322) were students at a metropolitan university in South Africa who completed the Fear of COVID-19 Scale, the Perceived Stress Scale, the 13-item Sense of Coherence Scale, and the PTSD Checklist. Path analysis was used to conduct a serial mediation anal

Major depressive disorder (MDD) frequently co-occurs with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), yet little is known about the sequence of symptom changes in trauma-focused treatment for individuals with this comorbidity. This study used disaggregated cross-lagged multilevel models to examine the temporal relationships between PTSD and depression symptom change in a randomized clinical trial comparing cognitive processing therapy (CPT) and CPT enhanced with behavioral activation (BA+CPT). The sample included 78 U.S. active duty service members with comorbid PTSD and MDD. Symptoms were assessed

BACKGROUND: Postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms are a significant mental health concern. Although obstetric complications are often considered central, growing evidence suggests that women's emotional and subjective responses to childbirth may play a more decisive role in the development of trauma-related symptoms.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of postpartum PTSD symptoms one month after childbirth and to identify the most relevant obstetric, psychological, and psychosocial risk factors, with a particular focus on emotional and dissociative responses.
METHODS: A

IMPORTANCE: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are robust estimators of poor health across the lifespan, yet most research relies on retrospective reports from adult samples and conventional ACE measures that exclude community-level adversity. Focusing on emerging adulthood-a developmental period when adversity may exert increased lifetime associations-provides a clearer view of near-term impacts and a critical window for intervention.
OBJECTIVES: To examine associations between conventional and community-level ACEs and mental health, substance use, interpersonal violence, and educational o

OBJECTIVE: This single-arm effectiveness study explored changes in trauma-related symptoms-including dissociation, depression, anxiety, sexual issues and sleep disturbances-throughout a multimodal, phased trauma intervention, to explore treatment response in real-world settings with varied populations and complex clinical presentations, as well as varied degrees of clinician experience.
METHOD: Symptom change was assessed among participants undergoing a triphasic trauma therapy called trauma practice. Data were collected at five time points: pretreatment (n = 41), Phase 1 (n = 37), Phase 2 (n

This perspective presents a discussion on digital interventions and strategies to support the mental health of first responders working in regional, rural and remote areas. First responders are often required to respond to traumatic, violent and challenging situations. Accumulative exposure to these situations can impact first responders' mental health, and symptoms of depression, anxiety, psychological distress, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common. Rural first responders have similar prevalence rates of trauma to their metropolitan counterparts. However, rural first responder

ABSTRACTBackground: Prior exposure to traumatic events significantly increases the risk of developing substance use disorders (SUD), while having SUD, in turn, elevates the likelihood of encountering additional traumatic events. Despite this relationship, the consequences of trauma frequently go undetected and untreated in this population. The trauma-focused intervention eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR), a first-line treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), has shown promising therapeutic potential in SUD patients. However, its underlying neurobiological mechani
