Despite intensive use of antibiotics, Ludwig's angina remains a potentially lethal infection because of the risk of upper airway obstruction and spread into the mediastinum. We present two patients who survived mediastinitis complicating Ludwig's angina due to Streptococcus milleri. Computed tomography performed early in the course of the disease detected pus collections and directed appropriate drainage procedures.

In 18 patients with unclear pain in the wrist limiting hand movement, arthrography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were compared. The FISP gradient echo sequence turned out to be superior to the T1 weighted spin-echo sequence in the imaging of the triangular fibrocartilage complex. MRI is very sensitive in detecting triangular fibrocartilage lesions and therefore represents a suitable non-invasive screening method. It is, however, not possible to assess the degree of the lesion. Ruptures in carpal tendons could only be diagnosed by means of arthrography.

A 79 year old man with a twelve year progressive history of prosopagnosia and recent naming difficulty, in whom other intellectual skills were preserved, is described. Positron emission tomography (PET) revealed an area of right temporal lobe hypometabolism, with an additional area of less severe hypometabolism at the left temporal pole. This may represent an example of progressive focal cortical degeneration similar to that associated with primary progressive dysphasia, but affecting the right temporal lobe.

A 51-year-old female was diagnosed as diabetes mellitus and pointed out of the abnormal data on CA 19-9. Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated the absence of pancreatic body and tail, and showed gall stone and thickening of the gallbladder wall. So we diagnosed this case as aplasia of the pancreatic body and tail, without operation. This is 59th case in Japan.

The CT findings of 11 malignant primary supratentorial tumors in children are compared with those of 38 benign tumors. The malignant tumors were more often laterally placed and surrounded by edema. Four patients with adrenal metastases from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) diagnosed with computed tomography are described. We compared the results of CT and conventional tomography examinations of the thorax of 137 patients with each other and with the final results. In the diagnosis of bronchial carcinomas we found no significant differences between the two methods. In all other investigated items CT proved to be superior to conventional tomography, especially of the evaluation of mediastinum (90% vs. 35%). The paper is concerned with methods for the determination of the liver volume using polypositional scintigraphy (PS) and computed emission tomography (SPECT). The accuracy of both methods was assessed using a liver phantom. The methods were tested in clinical practice on patients with diffuse liver lesions. A liver volume value compared with values in normometric tables as well as differences between a geometrical volume calculated by PS and a volume calculated by SPECT were of diagnostic importance.

A 41-year-old woman presented with a history of sudden onset of a dementia with frontal signs and antero-retrograde amnesia. CT showed a bilateral paramedian thalamic infarct which was confirmed by MRI. The study of regional cerebral blood flow showed a decrease in both frontal regions. Results of imaging suggested lesions of the ventro-oral, latero-polar and intralaminar nuclei as well as of the mammillo-thalamic tract. The dorso-median nucleus appeared to be relatively spared.

184 patients with arterial hypertension (AH) were studied. 63 of them had essential hypertension, 49 had renovascular hypertension, 27 had Leriche's syndrome, 38 had aortal aneurysms and 7 had coarctation of aorta. From 95 subjects imaged with both speed of sound and attenuation ultrasonic computed tomography (UCT), quantitative analyses are presented on 40 cases where unequivocal correlating clinical diagnoses are available. Sixty patients with esophageal cancer infiltration of mediastinal structures and metastasis to lymph nodes were prospectively evaluated by computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging and then underwent surgical resection of the tumor (n = 57) or diagnostic thoracotomy (n = 3). Lymph nodes were excised from standardized locations and examined histologically. Sensitivity and specificity of both methods for all criteria were found so low that the value of these methods for planning surgery--or for stratification to different therapeutic arms in comparative studies--must be questioned.

Germ cell tumor exists as a primary entity in the anterior mediastinum. In a CT study of two males and one female with primary non-seminomatous germ cell tumors all masses were large and lobulated with a mixed density. The fat planes were for the most part obliterated.
