The objective of this study was to analyze the influence of insertion torque, bone type, and peri-implant bone loss on implant stability quotient (ISQ) of cylindrical external hexagon (EH) and Morse Taper (MT) implants. Forty-four single implants were placed in the edentulous areas of 20 patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Immediately after implant placement (t1) and after osseointegration (four and six months for mandible and maxilla, respectively) (t2), insertion torque, resonance frequency, and peri-implant bone loss were measured using probing depths and digital periapic

Oral health inequalities associated with socioeconomic status are widely observed but may depend on the way that both oral health and socioeconomic status are measured. Our aim was to investigate inequalities using diverse indicators of oral health and 4 socioeconomic determinants, in the context of age and cohort. Multiple linear or logistic regressions were estimated for 7 oral health measures representing very different outcomes (2 caries prevalence measures, decayed/missing/filled teeth, 6-mm pockets, number of teeth, anterior spaces, and excellent oral health) against 4 socioeconomic meas

The mainstream use of dental implants has allowed millions of patients to benefit from the predictability of dental implant therapy and, in many instances, dental implants have become the standard of care. Even though success rates in implant dentistry are well above 90 percent, complications do occur. Most complications are preventable with proper planning and execution. Others are inherent to the risks of surgery and may require intervention. The purpose of this paper is to classify the possible complications that may occur and to discuss their prevention and management.

AIMS: To report dental caries status, related health behaviours and social determinants among a representative sample of adults residing in Jerusalem.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted using a stratified sample of 254 Jewish and married adults aged 35-44 years in Jerusalem. Dental caries status was examined according to DMFT, percentage of caries-free persons and of people maintaining all their natural teeth (no teeth missing due to caries). The results were analysed by the independent variables and interpreted by weighted caries scores for the total Jerusalem population.

AIM: The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate a new surgical approach for the immediate rehabilitation of fully edentulous maxilla without any type of bone grafting.
METHODS: The technique named ''V-II-V'' consists of an immediately loaded full-arch bridge supported by six implants. Two distal implants engage the posterior wall of the maxillary sinus, being tilted 30-45 degrees relative to the occlusal plane. Two other tilted implants engage the anterior wall of the sinus, and finally two axial implants are inserted in the anterior maxilla. An acrylic provisional restoration is deliv

BACKGROUND: The inflammatory response that is directed in large part by proinflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-1 is genetically determined, with some people having a more vigorous response than others to the same stimulus. The reason for this is speculated that the dysregulated production of IL-1 in some individuals overrides the feedback mechanisms that normally master the dose of inflammation to a level sufficient to fight microbial invasion without long-lasting damage to the tissues involved. The aims of the present study were to determine the distribution of IL-1 gene polymorphism (IL-1

OBJECTIVES: The beneficial effects of the one-stage, full-mouth disinfection remain controversial in the scientific literature. This might be due to the fact that an entire mouth disinfection with the use of antiseptics has been confused with a full-mouth scaling and root planing. This parallel, single blind RCT study aimed to compare several full-mouth treatment strategies with each other.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy-one patients with moderate periodontitis were randomly allocated to one of the following treatment strategies: scaling and root planing, quadrant by quadrant, at two-week inte

BACKGROUND, AIMS: Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans (Aa) has been implicated as the putative micro-organism for localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP). The most distinct clinical features of LJP include severe angular bony defects of the mesial sides of permanent first molars and the onset of disease during puberty. Currently, no large-scale studies have been performed which address the change in detection rates of Aa on the mesial sides of permanent 1st molars following eruption and up to puberty.
METHOD: In this study, subgingival plaque samples were taken from the mesial pockets of 2 ra

BACKGROUND: Barrier membranes have been used to promote bone ingrowth on implants with dehiscences and fenestrations. Membranes also have been used to protect defects adjacent to implants placed at the time of extraction. The concept of guided bone regeneration relates to preferentially allowing cells from bone to migrate into various defects while excluding fibrous tissue and epithelium. The purpose of these procedures is to enhance bone-to-implant contact at the treated sites and to prevent mucosal complications.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to report clinical outcomes for implan

Root surface resorption, ankylosis (replacement resorption) and alveolar bone resorption are not uncommon sequelae to periodontal healing in both animal and human trials whether the treatment objective is regenerative, preventive, or conservative. The present report describes a case with progressive cervical root resorption in a patient who received periodontal regenerative treatment with guided tissue regeneration (GTR). A 46-year-old woman was referred for treatment of severe periodontitis. Remaining radiographic attachment was less than 50%. Following a period of 18 months, during which non

OBJECTIVES: Millions of restorative procedures are performed annually in the United States, yet very little is known about their distribution in the general population. With increasing concern about potential adverse health effects of some restorative materials, a better understanding of the extent of exposure to these materials in the population is important. The purpose of this study is to report the prevalence, patterns, and distribution of dental restorative materials in a population of male veterans.
METHODS: This collaborative study with the US Air Force examined 1,166 male veterans to

AIMS: Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis is a rare hematologic disorder usually affecting children and most commonly involving the head and neck region. Primary oro-facial manifestations are rare, and their diagnosis is often challenging as they are numerous and often resemble common pathologies, refractory to conventional medical and/or instrumental treatments. For such reasons, the diagnosis is frequently delayed, as is the following staging and therapy onset. We retrospectively studied 45 pediatric patients affected by Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis with onset in the head and neck, to examine the

Inherited peripheral neuropathies are among the most common hereditary diseases of the nervous system. Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease, also known from previous classifications as hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN), is certainly the most common inherited neuropathy. In the past several years, various treatments for CMT have been proposed, although specific therapies are not yet available. In clinical practice, rehabilitative strategies remain the most helpful therapeutic approach to these patients. There is still a lack of consensus on the best way to rehabilitate patients affect

Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome (WHS) is a well-known multiple congenital anomalies/mental retardation syndrome, firstly described in 1961 by Cooper and Hirschhorn. Its frequency is estimated as 1/50,000-1/20,000 births, with a female predilection of 2:1. The disorder is caused by partial loss of material from the distal portion of the short arm of chromosome 4 (4p16.3), and is considered a contiguous gene syndrome. No single gene deletions or intragenic mutations have been shown to confer the full WHS phenotype. Since the disorder was brought to the attention of geneticists, many additional cases ha

The aims of this investigation were to histologically evaluate in monkeys the effect of a repetitive mechanical trauma alone on the peri-implant tissues, and the effect of a repetitive mechanical trauma in combination with ligature-induced peri-implantitis on the peri-implant tissues. The study used 5 male cynomolgus monkeys. Prior to the start of the study, all premolars and the first and second molars in the mandible were extracted. After a healing period of 12 weeks, following tooth extraction, split/full thickness flaps were elevated on both sides of the mandible in order to expose the bon

AIM: Primary aim of this study was to evaluate if patient morbidity was improved by diminishing graft thickness and height; secondary objective was to evaluate if such graft modifications influence root coverage and aesthetic outcomes.
METHODS: 60 Miller class I and II gingival recessions (GR) (≥ 3 mm in depth) were treated with the coronally advanced flap plus extraoral de-epithelialized free gingival graft (FGG). In 30 randomly selected control GRs ("big graft group"), the FGG thickness was ≥ 2 mm and the height was equal to bone dehiscence (BD); in the other 30 test defects ("small graft g
