Primary pulmonary sporotrichosis, a rare fungal disease was found in chronic alcoholic farmer from the sub-Himalayan region, an endemic mycoses area. Primary pulmonary sporotrichosis is a hidden entity, at times mimicking tuberculosis, and often under or lately diagnosed due to lack of awareness. We should consider the possibility of pulmonary sporotrichosis in patients with chronic cough and cavitary parenchymal disease, particularly in chronic alcoholics, gardeners, and forest workers. Sputum culture for fungus as a part of diagnostic studies is needed especially in endemic mycoses areas for

The purpose of this report is to describe four cases of nocardiosis observed over an eight-year period in medical units of Principal Hospital in Dakar, Senegal. It is a rare infection occurring mainly in people with weakened immune systems. Pulmonary forms are predominate and clinical and laboratory presentation can mimic pulmonary tuberculosis. Diagnosis should be suspected in patients presenting pulmonary infections and negative sputum bacilloscopy. Nocardia bacteria should be identified before starting antibiotic treatment. Patients require long-term antibiotic treatment with third generati

The type of pulmonary histoplasmosis presents limited lesions to the lungs, with symptoms that are clinically and radiological similar to chronic pulmonary tuberculosis. This paper describes the clinical features of four cases of pulmonary histoplasmosis. Aspects of diagnostic and clinical, epidemiological, laboratory and imaging exams are discussed, in addition to the clinical status of the individuals five years after disease onset. The treatment of choice was oral medication, following which all the patients improved. It is important to understand the clinical status and the difficulties co

Osteoarticular tuberculosis (OATB) is a secondary chronic infection with paubacillary bacillus Koch (BK) that has bone and joint interest. Today in Romania, tuberculosis is a primary public health problem, according to World Health Organization (WHO) in 2015 alone, there have been 10.4 million new cases of tuberculosis (TB) in the world, of which 15.195 in Romania. Pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis, especially the osteoarticular form, with multiple outbreaks should of had a minimal impact, but because of the multiple characteristics such as: epidemiological, geographic, associated dise

The concomitant occurrence of tuberculosis infection within a Warthin tumor is extremely rare, as only 6 cases have been previously reported in the English-language literature. We report a new case in a 92-year-old man, who presented with a 20-year history of a painless swelling in the right infra-auricular area that had recently become painful and larger. The patient had no history of tuberculosis, weight loss, or chronic cough. The fluctuant mass was aspirated, but histopathology and routine culture were negative. Computed tomography identified a 5-cm, heterogeneous, enhancing mass with mult

Tuberculosis (TB) remains endemic in most of the developing countries. However, a resurgence of tuberculosis has also been reported in the past decades in developed countries, not only in the lungs, but also in extrapulmonary sites, e.g. the vertebral column. Vertebral TB is most often found in the lower thoracic and upper lumbar regions. Diagnosis is often difficult; clinical findings are usually non-specific and radiologic features may mimic those of other bacterial, fungal, inflammatory and neoplastic diseases. However, recognition and understanding of the radiological findings may help in

An increased incidence of tuberculosis has been observed in Israel in 1985, 1986 and since 1990--years of large waves of immigrations. A very similar trend of disease was observed in the Mycobacterium Reference Laboratory of Israel, and consequently a survey was undertaken among the 1,181 bacteriologically confirmed tuberculosis cases newly registered there in 1983-92. The overall percent distribution of drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis during this period was 12.6% (7.3% resistant to one drug and 5.3% (multiple drug resistance). The highest percent distribution of drug-resistant bacil

Tuberculosis (TB) remains the leading infectious cause of death worldwide, yet immunological protection against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) remain poorly understood. We performed integrated single-cell transcriptomics and functional T-cell cloning on paired bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and peripheral blood samples from those exposed to TB, using IGRA and PET-CT to study potentially protective responses across the spectrum of TB infection/disease. Recent Mtb exposure alone was sufficient to remodel the pulmonary T-cell compartment. Longitudinal follow-up demonstrated that all participants

Tuberculosis in solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients is a clinical challenge. This opportunistic infection has atypical presentations and raises concerns due to both the toxicity of antifimic drugs and their interaction with immunosuppressive therapy that may result in graft loss or death. This retrospective review of cases of active tuberculosis after SOT describes the management of this infection in a hospital in Argentina. Between January 2006 and June 2022, 27 transplanted patients had positive cultures for the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. Their median age was 56 years; 78% were

Tuberculous bronchopleural fistula (BPF) is a rare and potentially life-threatening complication of pulmonary tuberculosis, in which abnormal connections form between the bronchial tree and the pleural space. These abnormal connections allow air and secretions to pass from the lungs into the pleural space, causing a range of symptoms from benign cough to acute tension pneumothorax. The management of tuberculous BPF requires an individualized approach based on the patient's condition and response to treatment. Anti-tuberculosis therapy is essential for controlling the active tuberculosis infect

Peritoneal tuberculosis (PTB) is a rare subset of extrapulmonary tuberculosis which account for only 0.5-1% of all cases. PTB diagnosis can be challenging due to nonspecific clinical manifestations. We present a known case of pulmonary tuberculosis that admitted to the surgery ward due to the major complaint of abdominal pain since ten days before admission. In imaging studies, positive findings favoring mechanical obstruction were detected. There were also several hypodense lesions in the liver suggestive of visceral tuberculosis. An adhesion was noted during exploratory laparotomy prior to t

PURPOSE: To report a case of ocular co-infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Toxoplasma gondii in an immunocompetent woman.
METHOD: Retrospective observational case report.
RESULT: A 61-year-old woman presented with decreased vision and floaters in the right eye of 1-month duration. Ocular examination revealed panuveitis with a large yellowish-white retinochoroiditis lesion adjacent to a chorioretinal scar. Investigations showed positive Mantoux test, QuantiFERON TB test, and HRCT chest suggestive of active pulmonary tuberculosis. Serology revealed raised IgG anti T. gondii antibody.

Primary hepatic tuberculosis is a rare manifestation of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis even in highly endemic countries. The incidence of hepatic tuberculosis has increased in the recent years due to high prevalence of HIV/AIDS. Radiological imaging is an important tool for making the diagnosis, but often the imaging findings are non-specific and may mimic other benign or malignant hepatic diseases. We report a case of 54-year-old woman who was detected to have hepatic mass on radiological imaging which was misdiagnosed as hydatid cyst. Intraoperatively, the characteristic features of hydatid cy

A 26-year-old woman was diagnosed with and treated for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in 2002. She was admitted 11 years later with nephrotic-range proteinuria and lupus nephritis and received two doses of rituximab after failing on steroids and mycophenolate mofetil. Four months later, she presented with fever and joint pain/swelling. Gram stains, joint aspirates, and blood culture all yielded negative results for bacteria. She was discharged after treatment for a possible flare of lupus, but two weeks later, she presented again with a cough and shortness of breath in addition to the flar

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous regression of lesions occurs in non-infectious benign diseases, such as sarcoidosis, as well as in infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis. Lung cancer and malignant lymphoma, on the other hand, rarely follow a similar course. We report a rare case of lung tuberculosis that presented with multiple nodules with metachronous changes in size.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of a 50-year-old immunocompetent Japanese man with pulmonary tuberculosis in the form of multifocal nodules. He came to our hospital because of a chest X-ray abnormality. During the course of

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is one of the most prevalent human infections. Although the largest share of the burden of disease is in Africa and Asia, tuberculosis has a global footprint due to travel and migration. Resource constraints in many low- and middle-income countries are hampering efforts to control new infections and to prevent drug resistance. Infection of the central nervous system by Mycobacterium tuberculosis includes meningitis, tuberculoma, and abscess and carries a high morbidity and mortality. High clinical suspicion, combined with cerebrospinal fluid analysis and brain imagin

Detection of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is a cost-effective procedure in patients at high risk of developing tuberculosis later and who could benefit from preventive treatment. The commonest situation where screening is indicated is the search for infected contacts of an index case with pulmonary tuberculosis. As a screening procedure the current tendency is to replace the time-honoured tuberculin skin test by one of the new blood tests measuring the release of interferon gamma by sensitised T lymphocytes after stimulation by specific peptides from M. tuberculosis. The main advantage

A 36-year-old Philippine woman had had fever and general fatigue from September, 2006 (11th week of pregnancy). She was admitted with high fever, general fatigue and dyspnea on October 16, 2006 (13th week of pregnancy). A chest radiograph on admission showed bilateral miliary shadows and ground glass shadows. She already had severe hypoxia on admission. As acid-fast bacilli were positive in urine (Gaffky 8) and sputum (Gaffky 1), we diagnosed as miliary tuberculosis and pulmonary tuberculosis complicated with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). We treated her with antituberculosis chem

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis in immigrants is an emerging disease in industrialized countries.
METHOD: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of culture-positive tuberculosis cases in the immigrant and native populations.
RESULTS: One hundred and five cases of tuberculosis were observed; 22 cases (21%) were in immigrants. The 2002 incidence was 64.3 cases per 100,000 immigrants. Mean age of the affected immigrants was 28.5 years lower than that of the affected native population (p < 0.001). The rate of HIV coinfection was 9.1%. In 81.8% (18) of immigrants, p
