Opioid Overdose Risk and Recovery Barriers: A Mixed Methods Study of Perspectives From a Community.

OBJECTIVES: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, opioid-related deaths in the United States have increased steadily during the past 20 years, contributing to a major public health emergency. In Nebraska's most populous county, Douglas County, the drug overdose mortality rate nearly doubled from 2015 to 2021. This study assessed the current needs, barriers, and priorities related to opioid use and overdose in Douglas County to inform local response strategies. METHODS: We used a mixed methods explanatory sequential design that included (1) surveys of people with lived a

Translating Evidence-Based Strategies for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention and Management in Community and Clinical Settings: The Best Practices Clearinghouse.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) contributes to substantial health and economic burdens. In the United States, nearly half of the adult population (127.9 million in 2020) has 1 or more CVD-related conditions. Effective evidence-based approaches to prevent and treat CVD exist, yet it can take several years to incorporate scientific findings into practice. As a result, many practitioners are unaware of these public health and clinical strategies. To address this gap and reduce the lag between science and practice, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention launched the Best Practices Clearinghou

Cognitive differences between two Zebra species (Equus burchelli chapmanni and E. grevyi)-The possible role of fission-fusion dynamics.

In animals, high fission-fusion dynamics (FFD) characterize groups in which individuals frequently split into subgroups of different size and composition. Through evolution, this might have led to an increase in specific cognitive skills that allowed individuals to better cope with the challenges they usually experience under such social conditions. This hypothesis has rarely been tested empirically, and therefore we compared 2 species of zebras to assess potential differences in their cognitive skills. The Chapman's zebras (Equus burchelli chapmanni) typically show lower levels of FFD associa

Evidence that anuran foot flagging displays function to exploit perceptual systems that mediate predator recognition.

Animal perceptual systems can shape the evolution of communication signals that help individuals negotiate social interactions. Here, we study this concept by exploring how conserved object recognition systems in anuran amphibians relate to evolutionary innovations in visual signaling behavior. We focus specifically on Bornean rock frogs (Staurois parvus), given that males of this species wave at each other with their hindlimbs (foot flag) to compete for access to mates. Past work shows that males who see this signal freeze as though they saw a predator; thus, we test whether perceptual system

Tattoo Ink as a Chronic Intradermal Chemical Exposure: A Policy and Research Agenda for US Regulation.

Tattooing injects pigments into the dermis, creating intradermal chemical exposure that can trigger delayed inflammatory reactions and, in some cases, systemic immune manifestations. About 32% of US adults report at least 1 tattoo, highlighting the need for prevention and accurate counseling. This topical review summarizes tattoo ink-associated harms and outlines US policy and research priorities. We synthesized regulatory documents and selected literature, including the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act (MoCRA), US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidance and safety communications

Capuchin monkeys (Sapajus [Cebus] apella) prefer larger sooner sequence payouts.

The peak-end effect, in which evaluations of experiences are disproportionately influenced by their most intense, most recent, or final moments, is seen consistently in humans but inconsistently in nonhuman primates. Understanding in what species and contexts these biases appear can help us better understand the evolution of these decision-making biases. Previous evidence in monkeys is contradictory, likely due to differences in experimental procedures. Thus, to assess whether capuchin monkeys (Sapajus [Cebus] apella) exhibit such biases, we tested 14 individuals in a manual two-item food sequ

Supervision, category structure, and selective attention in category learning: A comparative approach.

We investigated the interaction between supervision and category structure in visual categorization across two species that we assumed to have different abilities to selectively attend. Specifically, we compared humans and pigeons in a category learning task, in which the category structure (dense vs. sparse) and the level of supervision by corrective feedback (low vs. high) were manipulated. Results showed a benefit of supervision across species, which was particularly strong in learning the sparse categories. Moreover, both species benefited from category structures that had multiple categor

Beyond Free Screening: Structural Barriers to Follow-Up Cervical Cancer Care Among Uninsured Hispanic Women in Minnesota, 2020-2021.

OBJECTIVES: Uninsured or underinsured Hispanic women in Minnesota use the state's free cervical cancer screening program, Sage. Although the rate of screening program use is high, incidence of and mortality from cervical cancer persist in this group. We examined systemic barriers to follow-up cervical cancer care despite access to the free program. METHODS: From fall 2020 through spring 2021, we conducted virtual focus groups with 23 Hispanic women in Minnesota who previously received Sage services. We interviewed 7 key informants, including service providers, clinic administrators, and Sage

Exploratory Analysis of the Characteristics Associated With the Use of Fentanyl Test Strips Among People Who Use Drugs in Rhode Island, 2021-2023.

OBJECTIVES: Fentanyl overdose deaths are a critical public health issue in the United States. Rhode Island, an early epicenter of the fentanyl crisis, has seen fentanyl overdose deaths increase 30-fold since 2009. In response, harm reduction tools such as fentanyl test strips (FTSs) have been introduced to help people who use drugs (PWUD) detect fentanyl in their substances. We analyzed FTS use among PWUD in Rhode Island from 2021 through 2023 and identified characteristics associated with their use. METHODS: We conducted a pooled cross-sectional analysis using aggregate data from the Rhode I

Evaluating the Impact of the Federal Tobacco 21 Legislation on Adolescent E-Cigarette Use and Risk Perceptions.

OBJECTIVES: The rise in popularity of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) among adolescents in the United States during the past decade is concerning because of the device's novelty and potential long-term health effects. In response, a federal Tobacco 21 (T21) law was enacted in 2019 to raise the minimum age for purchasing tobacco products and e-cigarettes from 18 to 21 years. We examined changes in adolescent e-cigarette use after implementation of T21 during a period of broader federal tobacco control activity. METHODS: We analyzed data from the 2019 and 2020 National Youth Tobacco Survey

Time to Progress Through the Latent Tuberculosis Infection Care Cascade in Primary Care.

OBJECTIVES: Although treatment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is highly effective for preventing tuberculosis disease, diagnosis requires several steps. A care cascade is a helpful framework for identifying the clinical events necessary for successful LTBI treatment, yet the timing of progression through these events is poorly characterized. We calculated the timing of an LTBI care cascade and assessed whether timing was associated with increased cascade progression. METHODS: We conducted an observational study through the Tuberculosis Epidemiologic Studies Consortium using electroni

Evaluating Estimates of Recent Tuberculosis Transmission Using Epidemiologic and Whole-Genome Sequencing Data, Los Angeles County, California, 2014-2018.

OBJECTIVES: Estimating the percentage of tuberculosis cases in a population attributable to recent transmission, compared with reactivation of past infections, is crucial for public health decision-making. This study evaluated a previously published plausible-source case (PSC) method for estimating recent transmission in Los Angeles County (LA County) against a reference standard based on epidemiologic and whole-genome sequencing data. METHODS: We analyzed tuberculosis cases diagnosed in LA County from 2014 through 2018 using surveillance data. Cases were classified as consistent or inconsist

Lyme Carditis Identified by a Novel Syndromic Surveillance Definition, New York State, 2017-2021.

OBJECTIVES: Lyme carditis is a rare, potentially fatal manifestation of Lyme disease. Although Lyme disease is nationally notifiable, data on clinical manifestations are not collected systematically in the United States. We developed a syndromic surveillance definition to identify patients with Lyme carditis in New York State during 2017-2021. METHODS: We developed a definition of Lyme carditis by using diagnostic codes and keywords to identify emergency department visits related to Lyme carditis through the National Syndromic Surveillance Program's BioSense Platform. We systematically abstra

Ticks in the Tropics: Challenging the Myth of a Lyme-Less Florida.

OBJECTIVES: Few analyses have differentiated locally acquired Lyme disease infection from travel-associated infection, limiting the ability to interpret whether case counts reflect true in-state transmission or increased detection among mobile populations. We analyzed and compared trends in Lyme disease incidence at the national level and in the state of Florida. METHODS: We primarily used Lyme disease surveillance data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 2010 through 2023. The data included total case numbers, demographic characteristics, and county-level distribution ma
