A Novel Metallo-β-Lactamase Involved in the Ampicillin Resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae ATCC 49136 Strain.

Streptococcus pneumoniae, a penicillin-sensitive bacterium, is recognized as a major cause of pneumonia and is treated clinically with penicillin-based antibiotics. The rapid increase in resistance to penicillin and other antibiotics affects 450 million people globally and results in 4 million deaths every year. To unveil the mechanism of resistance of S. pneumoniae is thus an important issue to treat streptococcal disease that might consequently save millions of lives around the world. In this work, we isolated a streptococci-conserved L-ascorbate 6-phosphate lactonase, from S. pneumoniae ATC

Antimicrobial Resistant Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. in Houseflies Infesting Fish in Food Markets in Zambia.

Diarrhea is one of the most common diseases and is a leading cause of death in developing countries. This is often caused by contaminated food. Poor food hygiene standards are exacerbated by the presence of flies which can transmit a variety of infectious microorganisms, particularly through animal source foods. This fact becomes especially important in developing countries like Zambia, where fish is a highly valued source of protein. Our interest in this study was to identify if the flies that beset food markets in Zambia carry important pathogenic bacteria on their bodies, and subsequently i

Co-prevalance of PMQR and 16S rRNA methylase genes in clinical Escherichia coli isolates with high diversity of CTX-M from diseased farmed pigeons.

In the present study, we determined the molecular epidemiology of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) in Escherichia coli isolated from diseased farmed pigeons in China. A total of 71 E. coli isolates were collected from three pigeon farms from 2011 to 2012 and screened for the presence of the ESBL genes. The ESBLs producers were further tested for the presence of PMQR-encoding genes as well as the 16S rRNA methylase gene using PCR and DNA sequence analysis. Co-transfer of plasmids encoding for ESBLs, PMQR determinants and/or 16S rRNA methylase gene was performed by conjugation into E. coli

Whole genome sequencing of extended-spectrum β-lactamase producing Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated from a patient in Lebanon.

OBJECTIVE: The emergence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacteria is now a critical concern. The ESBL-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae constitutes one of the most common multidrug-resistant (MDR) groups of gram-negative bacteria involved in nosocomial infections worldwide. In this study we report on the molecular characterization through whole genome sequencing of an ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae strain, LAU-KP1, isolated from a stool sample from a patient admitted for a gastrointestinal procedure/surgery at the Lebanese Amrican University Medical Center-Rizk Hospital (LAUMCRH)

Double- and multi-carbapenemase-producers: the excessively armored bacilli of the current decade.

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Gram-negative nosocomial pathogens commonly carry one carbapenemase gene conferring resistance to carbapenems and other beta-lactam antibiotics. However, increasing reports show that double-carbapenemase-producing (DCP) and even multi-carbapenemase-producing (MCP) bacteria are emerging in some parts of the world, diminishing further, in some cases, the already limited treatment options. In the present review, the up-to-date reports of DCP and MCP isolates are summarized and concerns regarding their emergence are discussed.

First report of an OXA-48-producing multidrug-resistant Proteus mirabilis strain from Gaza, Palestine.

We report the first multidrug-resistant Proteus mirabilis strain producing the carbapenemase OXA-48 (Pm-OXA-48) isolated at Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza, Palestine. Draft genome sequencing of Pm-OXA-48 identified 16 antimicrobial resistance genes, encoding resistance to β-lactams, aminoglycosides, fluoroquinolones, phenicols, streptothricin, tetracycline, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Complete sequencing of the bla(OXA-48)-harboring plasmid revealed that it is a 72 kb long IncL/M plasmid, harboring carbapenemase gene bla(OXA-48), extended spectrum β-lactamase gene bla(CTX-M-14), and aminogly

Capybara Bites: Report of Human Injury Caused by a Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris.

BACKGROUND: Health care demand due to animal bites is frequent, especially in the emergency department (ED). In addition to the physical trauma caused by bites, one should be concerned with infectious diseases that can be transmitted. The range of the lesions depends on the animal species. Bites of Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris (capybaras) in humans are relatively uncommon. Capybaras are docile animals; however, their large rodent incisive teeth could cause serious injury. Localized care, antibiotic therapy when necessary, careful examination of the structures, tetanus and rabies immunization as i

Comparative prevalence and characterization of ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae in dominant versus subdominant enteric flora in veal calves at slaughterhouse, France.

Food-producing animals have become a growing reservoir of Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacteria. In cattle, veal calves are exposed to high amounts of antibiotics but ESBL prevalence data are still limited compared to other food sectors such as poultry production. Based on the investigation of 491 veal calves from different slaughtering batches at 12 abattoirs, this study shows a prevalence of 29.4% of ESBL producers in the faecal flora of veal calves in France in 2012. A variety of blaCTX-M genes was found, reflecting possible diverse pathways of dissemination in cattle.

Structure, evolution and virtual screening of NDM-1 strain from Kolkata.

β-lactam antibiotics are utilised to treat bacterial infection. β-lactamase enzymes (EC 3.5.2.6) are produced by several bacteria and are responsible for their resistance to β-lactam antibiotics like penicillin, cephamycins and carbapenems. New Delhi Metallo-β-lactamase (NDM-1) is a gene that makes bacteria resistant to β-lactam antibiotics. Preparing a compound against NDM-1 will require additional investment and development by drug manufacturers as the current antibiotics will not treat patients with NDM-1 resistance. NDM-1 of Kolkata showed convergent-type evolution with other NDM-1 produci

Genetic basis of multidrug resistance in Acinetobacter clinical isolates in Taiwan.

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Acinetobacter spp. have emerged as a threat to public health. We investigated the various genes involved in resistance to fluoroquinolones, aminoglycosides, cephalosporins, and carbapenems in 75 clinical Acinetobacter isolates from a Taiwanese hospital. All isolates were tested for the gyrA mutations, the presence of integrons, bla(AmpC), and carbapenem resistance genes. The Ser83Leu mutation in GyrA accounted for fluoroquinolone resistance. The presence of integrons containing aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes was associated with resistance to gentamicin and tobramyci
