The purpose of this study was to evaluate the factor structure of the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale for Children and Adolescents (LSAS-CA). The LSAS-CA was administered to 225 children and adolescents as a component of various clinical studies. In addition, other measures of psychopathology and impairment were administered to a subgroup of the sample. STUDY OBJECTIVES: To examine the prevalence and distribution of the symptoms of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in a community-based sample of adolescents, and to assess association of SDB with body mass index, daytime sleepiness, school performance, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
DESIGN: Epidemiologic study of a community-based sample of adolescents and 1 parent with whom separate structured face to face diagnostic interviews were conducted.
SETTING: Metropolitan Detroit, Michigan, USA.

Expectations of future development were assessed in parents of non-disabled children (n = 240) using the Predictive Adaptive Ability Questionnaire (PAAQ). The reliability estimate for the overall PAAQ was 0.90, with a test-retest reliability of 0.99 and an interrater reliability of 0.83. Parental expectations did not significantly differ from normal adaptive ability developmental standards. Longitudinal examination of parental expectations and their influence on child development and the impact of chronic illness on such expectations is recommended.

Piagetian cognitive level, language abilities, adaptive behaviour and graphic skills were assessed in three groups of adolescents with severe learning difficulties: Down's syndrome (DS), congenital cerebral palsy (CP) and unknown origin (NSP). The children of mothers who said during the pregnancy that the child was not wanted were followed up to age of 16. The material is based on a 14 year follow-up of 96.5% of all the births in Northern Finland in 1966. A follow-up study was made on 200 children (115 boys, 85 girls) who had had infantile spasms, in order to compare their present condition over the age of six years with various prognostic factors. 48 of the children (30 males and 18 females) had died, and all the rest were aged six years or older at the time of final follow-up. 139 of the children had received ACTH therapy: at final follow-up, spasms had ceased in 43.5 per cent, and about the same proportion showed normal physical development; 23 per cent had normal mental development and 15.4 per cent were attending ordinary schools. This paper reviews the empirical evidence implicating conductive hearing impairment as a causal agent in learning disability, language dysfunction, and central auditory problems. From this review one can conclude that there are few, if any, valid data linking conductive hearing impairment to any of these problems. Suggestions for improving research in this area conclude the article.
