The objectives of this study are to describe central nervous system modulation associated with voice improvement following Type I thyroplasty in a patient with glottic insufficiency secondary to unilateral vocal fold paralysis. Serial functional magnetic resonance imaging scans were performed before as well as one and six months after thyroplasty. Paradigms consisting of four voice production tasks and a motor control task were completed. Volumes of activation within regions activated during each task were measured. Acoustic and aerodynamic measures were also obtained. A widespread network of

PURPOSE: This study explored vowel production and adaptation to articulatory constraints in adults with acquired apraxia of speech (AOS) plus aphasia.
METHOD: Five adults with acquired AOS plus aphasia and 5 healthy control participants produced the vowels [i], [epsilon], and [ae] in four word-length conditions in unconstrained and bite block conditions. In addition to acoustic and perceptual measures of vowel productions, individually determined idealized vowels based on each participant's best performance were used to assess vowel accuracy and distinctiveness.
RESULTS: Findings showed (a)

BACKGROUND: This study analyzed the effects of orthodontic maxillary expansion on the nasal cavity dimensions measured by acoustic rhinometry.
METHODS: A prospective study was performed. Fifty patients (27 male and 23 female patients) who had maxillary hypoplasia in relation to the mandible were studied. Patients presented either deciduous or mixed dentition, with age ranging from 4 to 14 years old. Twenty patients (11 male and 9 female patients) between the ages of 4 and 11 years, who also had deciduous or mixed dentition but without maxillary hypoplasia, served as a control group. A modifie

Subglottal pressure (SGP) is a valuable parameter in the research and clinical assessment of laryngeal function. The lungs serve as a constant pressure source during sustained phonation, and that pressure, SGP, can be used to determine the efficiency with which the larynx converts aerodynamic power to acoustic power. As the larynx serves as an aerodynamic transducer, the vocal efficiency (Ve) coefficient, defined as acoustic power (dB) divided by aerodynamic power (SGP x glottal airflow) has been shown to reliably reflect vocal health. However, current SGP measurement techniques are hesitantly

Much evidence suggests that the mental lexicon is organized into auditory neighborhoods, with words that are phonologically similar belonging to the same neighborhood. In this investigation, we considered the existence of visual neighborhoods. When a receiver watches someone speak a word, a neighborhood of homophenes (ie, words that look alike on the face, such as pat and bat) is activated. The simultaneous activation of a word's auditory and visual neighborhoods may, in part, account for why individuals recognize speech better in an auditory-visual condition than what would be predicted by th

The aim of this study was to identify the origin of swallowing sound components by using modern techniques that can provide numeric, synchronized acoustic-radiologic data. We enrolled 15 volunteer subjects (10 men and 5 women, average age = 29.5 +/- 8 years) and used an X-ray camera connected to a video acquisition card to obtain synchronized acoustic-radiologic data (25 images/s). The subjects were asked to swallow 10 ml of a barium suspension. Each sound component was associated with a specific position of the bolus and the anatomic structure that was moving. The average duration of the phar

OBJECTIVES: We sought to develop a less-invasive alternative to conventional arytenoid adduction using a cricoid implant.
METHODS: We performed a preliminary study with excised human and canine larynges. A nail-shaped stainless steel rod and an insertion device were designed for an in vivo animal trial. After unilateral recurrent laryngeal denervation surgery in 5 adult mongrel dogs, the implants were inserted endoscopically through a small mucosal incision over the cricoarytenoid joint. Acoustic and aerodynamic data were obtained from each animal before serial euthanasia followed by examinat

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is an important etiology of deafness worldwide. Hearing conservation programs are in place and have reduced the prevalence of NIHL, but this disorder is still far too common. Occupational and recreational pursuits expose people to loud noise and ten million persons in the US have some degree of noise-induced hearing impairment. It is estimated that 50 million in the US and 600 million people worldwide are exposed to noise hazards occupationally. Noise deafness is still an important and frequent cause of battlefield injury in the US military. A mainstay of hear

High-resolution ultrasonography (US) has gained increasing popularity as a diagnostic tool for assessment of the soft tissues in shoulder impingement syndrome. US is a powerful and accurate method for diagnosis of rotator cuff tears and other rotator cuff abnormalities, provided the examiner has a detailed knowledge of shoulder anatomy, uses a standardized examination technique, and has a thorough understanding of the potential pitfalls, limitations, and artifacts. False-positive sonographic findings of rotator cuff tears can be caused by the technique (anisotropy, transducer positioning, acou

In this paper, it is shown that the main source of mechanical energy of cardiovascular (CV) system i.e., rhythmic heart contraction is transformed to the oscillations of the CV walls and blood flow, and finally CV acoustical waves. These waves propagate through both blood flow (hemodynamical pathways) and tissues (viscoelastical pathways) toward the skin. Nonetheless, the CV walls could be assumed as the source of acoustical waves, since they act as the interface between blood flows and other tissues including skin. After obtaining the approximate accelerations of CV walls from pressure-flow (

The primary goal of this study was to characterize a performer's singing and speaking voice. One woman was not admitted to a premier choral group, but her sister, who was comparable in physical characteristics and background, was admitted and provided a valuable control subject. The perceptual judgment of a vocal coach who conducted the group's auditions was decisive in discriminating these 2 singers. The singer not admitted to the group described a history of voice pathology, lacked a functional head register, and spoke with a voice characterized by hoarseness. Multiple listener judgments and

Classrooms are often filled with deterrents that hamper a child's ability to listen and learn. It is evident that the acoustical environment in classrooms can be one such deterrent. Excessive background noise and reverberation can affect the achievement and educational performance of children with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and children with normal hearing sensitivity who have other auditory learning difficulties, as well as elementary school children with no verbal or hearing disabilities. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the extent of the problem of noise and reverberation in

A 59-year-old man had suffered from consciousness disturbance and right hemiplegia in December, 1996. He was diagnosed as left putaminal hemorrhage and his symptoms improved by conservative treatment. After one week since the onset, when he became alert, he noticed deafness. He was admitted in our hospital because of deafness and dysarthria in March, 2001. T 1-weighted MR image of the brain revealed bilateral putaminal hemorrhage and a low signal area in the white matter of right temporal lobe. Single photon emission computed tomography image revealed hypoperfusion in the bilateral temporal lo

OBJECTIVES: Children with cerebral injury often exhibit brief muscle contraction to a variety of stimuli. However, it remains to be determined whether or not the pattern of the reaction is stereotypical irrespective of the site stimulated. To answer this question, we studied electromyographic (EMG) responses to three types of stimuli in children.
METHODS: The EMG responses of cranial and limb muscles were recorded after acoustic or somaesthetic stimulation in 6 patients and 23 control subjects.
RESULTS: Acoustic stimuli evoked patterned motor activity with a rostrocaudal progression. Nose-ta

Stereotyped behaviors (e.g., body rocking) occur at high rates in individuals with mental retardation (e.g., Down syndrome). To determine if spontaneous stereotypy occurs in a murine model of Down syndrome, the home cage behavior of Ts65Dn and control mice was monitored during the dark cycle. Motor activity was further assessed in novel automated test chambers, with acoustic startle and rotor rod paradigms providing additional environmental challenges. Spontaneous stereotypy (repetitive jumping and cage top twirling) was observed in the home cage in approximately half of the Ts65Dn mice, compa

Seventeen patients (4 to 24 years old; mean, 9.7 years) with mild velopharyngeal insufficiency were treated in our department during the period 1996 to 1999 with augmentation of the posterior pharyngeal wall with autologous fat. The main disorder was a congenital short palate without a cleft, in most cases revealed by adenoidectomy. Four patients had previously undergone pharyngoplasty, and 1 had already been injected in the posterior pharyngeal wall with Teflon paste. All patients had been exhaustively treated with speech therapy, and the result remained unsatisfactory. The functional outcome

APEX, an acronym for computer Application for Psycho-Electrical eXperiments, is a user friendly tool used to conduct psychophysical experiments and to investigate new speech coding algorithms with cochlear implant users. Most common psychophysical experiments can be easily programmed and all stimuli can be easily created without any knowledge of computer programing. The pulsatile stimuli are composed off-line using custom-made MATLAB (Registered trademark of The Mathworks, Inc., http://www.mathworks.com) functions and are stored on hard disk or CD ROM. These functions convert either a speech s
