Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome is a neurological disorder caused by thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency. This encephalopathy is typically suspected in alcoholics adults, but it is important to remember that other less known and suspected causes can determine the development of the non-alcoholic Wernicke's encephalopathy. In non-alcoholic patients, the primary causes of Wernicke's encephalopathy include hyperemesis gravidarum, restrictive diets and malnutrition, cancer, post-operative complications following bariatric surgery. Few data are reported regarding non-alcoholic thiamine deficiency, especia…

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a serious condition linked to multiple health issues such as nervous system damage, heart disease, alcoholic liver disease, development of cancers, fetal alcohol syndrome, mental health disorders, and injuries to self and others. AUD presents a growing problem worldwide with significant economic and health care costs. Despite its growing prevalence, AUD remains underdiagnosed, partly due to the underreporting of alcohol intake and the stigma associated with the diagnosis. While traditionally diagnosed through clinical evaluation and patient history, diagnosis of A

Alcohol calculations are carried out in many forensic case types. On occasion, individuals under the age of 18 are involved, and alcohol calculations may be beneficial. To date, there are no studies that have determined the best way to estimate total body water (TBW) or alcohol elimination rates in juveniles for alcohol calculations. We utilized a data set of 207 females and 218 males, aged 3-18 years, from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, where TBW had been empirically measured, to evaluate the best anthropometric equation to use to estimate TBW in juveniles. For males aged 3-15 years and fem

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels find applications in various fields, including machinery and tissue engineering, owing to their exceptional mechanical properties. However, the mechanical properties of PVA hydrogels are subject to alteration due to environmental factors such as temperature, affecting their prolonged utilization. To enhance their lifespan, it is crucial to investigate their aging mechanisms. Using physically cross-linked PVA hydrogels, this study involved high-temperature accelerated aging tests at 60 °C for 80 d and their performance was analyzed through macroscopic mechanics

An atomic-level knowledge of the aggregation of archetypal molecular systems is essential to accurately model supramolecular structures and the transition from gas to liquid phase. The structures and forces involved in ethanol aggregation have been investigated using microwave spectroscopy and extensive quantum chemical calculations. Four isomers of the ethanol trimer have been observed and identified based on comparisons between experimental and predicted spectroscopic parameters, and considering collisional relaxation in the supersonic expansion. All observed isomers exhibit O-H ⋯ ${\cdots }

The development of efficient and robust catalytic systems based on earth-abundant transition metals for fundamentally new transformations is crucial for sustainable chemical synthesis. Herein, an effective and selective Ni-catalyzed dehydrogenative coupling of alcohols with hydrazines with the liberation of ammonia gas is reported. Although several methods were documented for the N-alkylation reaction, the present strategy is conceptually novel, and the reaction proceeds through a pathway involving N-N bond cleavage of phenylhydrazine followed by hydrogen autotransfer. This unprecedented metho

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a neurological condition linked to liver failure. Acute HE (Type A) occurs with acute liver failure, while chronic HE (Type C) is tied to cirrhosis and portal hypertension. HE treatments lag due to gaps in understanding its development by gender and age. We studied how sex and age impact HE and its severity with combined liver toxins. Our findings indicate that drug-induced (thioacetamide, TAA) brain edema was more severe in aged males than in young males or young/aged female rats. However, adding alcohol (ethanol, EtOH) worsens TAA's brain edema in both young an

Alcohol-associated hepatitis (AH) is an acute-on-chronic liver injury that occurs in patients with chronic alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). Patients with severe AH have high short-term mortality and lack effective pharmacologic therapies. Inflammation is believed to be one of the key factors promoting AH progression and has been actively investigated as therapeutic targets over the last several decades, but no effective inflammatory targets have been identified so far. In this review, we discuss how inflammatory cells and the inflammatory mediators produced by these cells contribute to

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use has an effect on nutritional status, with nutritional deficiencies being a major contributor to morbidity, for example Wernicke's encephalopathy. Currently, there is an absence of best-practice guidelines to support general practitioners (GPs) in the identification and management of malnutrition and nutritional risk factors in patients who drink at risky levels.
OBJECTIVE: This article reviews some of the nutritional considerations in patients who drink at risky levels or who have alcohol dependence, with the aim of enhancing GPs' awareness of the nutritional considera

Alcohol consumption induces hepatocyte damage through complex processes involving oxidative stress and disrupted metabolism. These factors alter proteomic and epigenetic marks, including alcohol-induced protein acetylation, which is a key post-translational modification (PTM) that regulates hepatic metabolism and is associated with the pathogenesis of alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). Recent evidence suggests lysine acetylation occurs when a proximal cysteine residue is within ∼15 Å of a lysine residue, referred to as a cysteine-lysine (Cys-Lys) pair. Here, acetylation can occur through

The neurohormone oxytocin (OT) has been proposed as a treatment for alcohol and nicotine use disorders. The aim of the present study was to examine whether intravenous (IV) OT decreases alcohol oral self-administration and consumption in nonhuman primates under a 6-h alcohol access procedure as well as alcohol and nicotine (IV) self-administration under 6-h concurrent access conditions. The subjects were five male baboons (Papio anubis) that self-administered oral alcohol (4% w/v) during 6-h sessions under a fixed ratio 3 (FR3) schedule per drink. Baseline levels of alcohol self-administration

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is present in the majority of patients with alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD), which leads to about 50% of cirrhosis-related hospitalizations and over 25% of deaths worldwide. Patients with ALD often present at an advanced stage, like cirrhosis with its complications and alcohol-associated hepatitis (AH), which has high short-term mortality. Current treatments are limited, with the limited benefit of glucocorticoids only in the short-term among patients with AH, highlighting an urgent need for novel therapies.

The prevalence of alcohol use disorder (AUD) has significantly increased over the last decade, leading to an increase in alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) rates worldwide. Despite this prominence, AUD in ALD remains undertreated and carries significant implications in the progression to end-stage ALD and increased mortality. In efforts to bridge this gap, interprofessional and integrated AUD treatment is necessary for patients with ALD to ensure early detection and an appropriately targeted level of care. Although pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, and psychosocial interventions independentl

Drinking to cope is associated with many negative alcohol-related outcomes among college students, such as increased alcohol use, drinking-related problems, and alcohol use disorders. Previous experimental studies have shown that students exposed to a stressor, compared to those not exposed to a stressor, drink more and have stronger urges to drink, presumably to cope with the stressor. However, no such study has tested this effect using a remote-based stressor, which may be more common for students because of the recent increase in online learning. As such, the present study aimed to (a) test

Alcohol-associated hepatitis is an extreme form of alcohol-related liver disease associated with high short-term mortality. Currently, there are no authorized therapies for the treatment of severe alcohol-associated hepatitis. Important diagnostic steps for alcohol-associated hepatitis include recognizing the presence of an alcohol use disorder, distinguishing alcohol-related liver disease from metabolic-dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, ruling out alternative causes of acute hepatitis, confirming the diagnosis with validated criteria or a liver biopsy, and using the model for en
