Attention deficit disorders--drugs or nutrition?

3-9% of schoolchildren in the U.K. suffer Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Since the 1950s stimulants have been used. particularly methylphenidate and dextroamphetamine, with some 75% response rate. The first non-stimulant medication--atmoxetine hydrochloride, has also been used. However, side effects have included: growth retardation; appetite loss: headache: stomachache: heart problem: insomnia: seizure; change of character: addiction or even suicidal thoughts. Alternative treatments have been used including omega-3s, yet the way they benefit in ADHD is uncertain. They ma

The Impact of Atlas Parcellation on Functional Connectivity Analysis Across Six Psychiatric Disorders.

Neuropsychiatric disorders are associated with altered functional connectivity (FC); however, the reported regional patterns of functional alterations suffered from low replicability and high variability. This is partly because of differences in the atlas and delineation techniques used to measure FC-related deficits within/across disorders. We systematically investigated the impact of the brain parcellation approach on the FC-based brain network analysis. We focused on identifying the replicable FCs using three structural brain atlases, including Automated Anatomical Labeling (AAL), Brainneto

A Review of Machine Learning and Deep Learning Approaches on Mental Health Diagnosis.

Combating mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety has become a global concern. As a result of the necessity for finding effective ways to battle these problems, machine learning approaches have been included in healthcare systems for the diagnosis and probable prediction of the treatment outcomes of mental health conditions. With the growing interest in machine and deep learning methods, analysis of existing work to guide future research directions is necessary. In this study, 33 articles on the diagnosis of schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress di

Clinical trials of N-acetylcysteine in psychiatry and neurology: A systematic review.

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is recognized for its role in acetaminophen overdose and as a mucolytic. Over the past decade, there has been growing evidence for the use of NAC in treating psychiatric and neurological disorders, considering its role in attenuating pathophysiological processes associated with these disorders, including oxidative stress, apoptosis, mitochondrial dysfunction, neuroinflammation and glutamate and dopamine dysregulation. In this systematic review we find favorable evidence for the use of NAC in several psychiatric and neurological disorders, particularly autism, Alzheimer's

Juvenile and young adult mentally disordered offenders: the role of child neuropsychiatric disorders.

A retrospective study of the prevalence of child neuropsychiatric disorders was done involving pervasive developmental disorder (PDD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and Tourette syndrome in young offenders (15-22 years, n = 126) consecutively referred for presentencing forensic psychiatric investigation (FPI) in Stockholm, Sweden. Most offenders were referred for FPI because of serious offenses. Case report sheets were prepared, and retrospective neuropsychiatric DSM IV diagnoses were made by the first two authors. For best-estimated diagnoses, the case report sheets were th

Who are those "risk-taking adolescents"? Individual differences in developmental neuroimaging research.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has illuminated the development of human brain function. Some of this work in typically-developing youth has ostensibly captured neural underpinnings of adolescent behavior which is characterized by risk-seeking propensity, according to psychometric questionnaires and a wealth of anecdote. Notably, cross-sectional comparisons have revealed age-dependent differences between adolescents and other age groups in regional brain responsiveness to prospective or experienced rewards (usually greater in adolescents) or penalties (usually diminished in adoles

Relationships Between Cortically Mediated Attentional Dysfunction and Social Anxiety, Self-Focused Attention, and External Attention Bias.

Social anxiety disorder is characterized by a marked fear and avoidance of social situations or a fear of being evaluated by others. Although training for top-down attentional control has been an effective treatment for social anxiety disorder, few studies have demonstrated that individuals with social anxiety have top-down attentional dysfunction. This study used dichotic listening (DL) tasks to investigate the relationship between social anxiety and top-down attentional control over relevant brain activities. We also investigated relationships between both social situation-dependent self-foc

Polycystic ovary syndrome: Unveiling the multifaceted contributors, mechanisms, and psychological impacts.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), also known as Stein-Leventhal syndrome, is a prevalent endocrine disorder affecting 6-13 % of women of reproductive age, with a significant proportion remaining undiagnosed. Characterized by hyperandrogenism, menstrual irregularities, and ovarian dysfunction, PCOS has extensive dermatological and metabolic implications, often contributing to adverse mental health outcomes. While depression and anxiety are commonly reported, distinguishing their etiology from obesity's frequent comorbidity with PCOS remains challenging. Emerging evidence suggests that hyperandr

Tourette's syndrome.

Tourette's syndrome is a movement disorder most commonly seen in school-age children. The incidence peaks around preadolescence with one half of cases resolving in early adulthood. Tourette's syndrome is the most common cause of tics, which are involuntary or semivoluntary, sudden, brief, intermittent, repetitive movements (motor tics) or sounds (phonic tics). It is often associated with psychiatric comorbidities, mainly attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Given its diverse presentation, Tourette's syndrome can mimic many hyperkinetic disorders, making t

Autism and Migraine: An Unexplored Association?

Autism spectrum disorder is characterized by neurological, psychiatric and medical comorbidities-some conditions co-occur so frequently that comorbidity in autism is the rule rather than the exception. The most common autism co-occurring conditions are intellectual disability, language disorders, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, epilepsy, gastrointestinal problems, sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, psychotic disorders, oppositional defiant disorder, and eating disorders. They are well known and studied. Migraine is the most common brain disease in th

Neural circuitry engaged during unsuccessful motor inhibition in pediatric bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Deficits in motor inhibition may contribute to impulsivity and irritability in children with bipolar disorder. Studies of the neural circuitry engaged during failed motor inhibition in pediatric bipolar disorder may increase our understanding of the pathophysiology of the illness. The authors tested the hypothesis that children with bipolar disorder and comparison subjects would differ in ventral prefrontal cortex, striatal, and anterior cingulate activation during unsuccessful motor inhibition. They also compared activation in medicated versus unmedicated children with bipolar diso

Effect of combined neurofeedback and game-based cognitive training on the treatment of ADHD: A randomized controlled study.

Neurofeedback (NF) is referred to as a "possibly efficacious" treatment in the current evidence-based reviews; therefore, more research is needed to determine its effects especially in combination with other treatments. The present study examines the effect of NF and game-based cognitive training on children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Thirty-two male students with ADHD were assigned to NF (N = 16; Mage=10.20; SD = 1.03) and waiting list control (N = 16; Mage = 10.05; SD = 0.83) in a randomized double-blind trial. The children in the NF group based on quantitative ele

The Use of Clonidine in the Treatment of Debilitating Obsessive-Compulsive Behaviors Comorbid With Depression and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: A Case Report.

Clonidine is an alpha-2 agonist traditionally used as an antihypertensive, and more recently in the treatment of psychiatric disorders such as attention-deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD), tic disorders such as Tourette's syndrome, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, there are scarce data in the literature about the use of clonidine in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In this report, we present the case of a 16-year-old female suffering from OCD. The first-line treatment with sertraline was not very efficacious in improving her symptoms and even led to wor

Hyperglycemia and cognitive impairments anticipate the onset of an overt type 2 diabetes-like phenotype in TALLYHO/JngJ mice.

Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a metabolic disorder characterized by chronic hyperglycemia, resulting from deficits in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Whilst the role of insulin in the peripheral nervous system has been ascertained in countless studies, its role in the central nervous system (CNS) is emerging only recently. Brain insulin has been lately associated with brain disorders like Alzheimer's disease, obsessive compulsive disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Thus, understanding the role of insulin as a common risk factor for mental and somatic comorb

Development and validation of an interpretable machine learning model for predicting ADHD comorbidity in children with allergic rhinitis: a SHAP-based analysis.

BACKGROUND: The co-occurrence of allergic rhinitis (AR) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) presents significant clinical challenges in pediatrics, yet predictive tools capturing non-linear neuro-immune interactions are lacking. METHODS: We developed an interpretable Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) model utilizing a hybrid feature selection pipeline on a cohort of 518 pediatric AR patients (255 with comorbid ADHD). Model performance was evaluated via an independent test set. Global and local interpretability was decoded using SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP). RESULTS:
