Perinatal mortality audit.

Perinatal mortality rate is a sensitive indicator of quality of care provided to women in pregnancy, at and after child birth and to the newborns in the first week of life. Regular perinatal audit would help in identifying all the factors that play a role in causing perinatal deaths and thus help in appropriate interventions to reduce avoidable perinatal deaths. A retrospective study of perinatal indices was conducted among 816 births delivered during the period of 1 year from April 2007 to March 2008 in Nepal Medical College. There were 11 still births and 11 early neonatal deaths. Breech pre

Triplets and quadruplets in Switzerland: comparison with singletons, and evolution over the last decade.

AIMS: Main objectives were 1) to determine the incidence of higher multiple births from 1995 to 1998 in Switzerland, and 2) to evaluate neonatal mortality and morbidity. Secondary objectives were 3) to compare the results with those of matched singletons, and 4) to compare the present data to the first Swiss study (1985-1988). METHODS: Retrospective analysis of maternal and neonatal data obtained from all Swiss hospitals. RESULTS: The incidence of triplet births was 1/3247 and that of quadruplet births 1/81,186. The median gestational age was 32 5/7 weeks for triplets, and 28 6/7 weeks for q

The prevalence of neural tube defects in eastern Ethiopia: A population-based surveillance.

Neural tube defects (NTDs) are congenital anomalies associated with stillbirth, morbidity, disability, and premature death. The absence of population-level data in many settings hinders the planning of effective prevention and intervention strategies. This study aims to determine the prevalence of NTDs in eastern Ethiopia through a population-based surveillance conducted at Hararghe health and demographic surveillance system's (HDSS) sites, eastern Ethiopia, from June 1, 2023, to May 31, 2024. All spontaneous pregnancy losses, children, and adults were eligible for inclusion. A paediatrician c

A study on preterm births during 2013-2015, Shiraz, Iran.

Preterm birth is the leading cause of neonatal and infant mortality and a substantial portion of neonatal morbidities. The perinatal mortality and morbidity statistics in developing countries are inadequate. In this study, we assessed prevalence and health outcomes of preterm deliveries in tertiary care university hospitals. A retrospective study of hospital records of premature babies born in all the five governmental tertiary care settings during the time interval of 2013-2015 in Shiraz was conducted. Result of this study showed that there was an overall 127.6 premature births per 1000 live

Loop electrosurgical excision procedure and risk of preterm birth: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) increases the risk for preterm birth before 37 weeks of gestation and clarify whether the increased risk for preterm birth is attributable to the procedure itself or to risk factors associated with cervical dysplasia. DATA SOURCES: Two authors performed a search of the relevant data through February 2013 using PubMed, Embase, Scopus, CENTRAL, and ClinicalTrials.gov. METHODS OF STUDY SELECTION: We included observational studies that compared rates of preterm birth in women with prior LEEP with women with no history of

Impact of Thyroid Autoimmunity on In Vitro Fertilization/Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection Outcomes and Fetal Weight.

Several studies have reported the association between thyroid autoimmunity (TAI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF)/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) outcomes. However, the findings remain controversial. We performed a large-scale retrospective cohort study to verify the effect of the presence of thyroid antibodies on IVF/ICSI outcomes and fetal growth and to evaluate the association between the types and titers of thyroid antibodies and adverse IVF/ICSI outcomes. A total of 16481 patients with infertility were referred to the Reproductive Center of Peking University Third Hospital for the

A dedicated surveillance network for congenital toxoplasmosis in Greece, 2006-2009: assessment of the results.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasmosis is caused by infection with the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Acute infections in pregnant women may be transmitted to the fetus and cause severe illness. The purpose of this study was to establish a dedicated surveillance network (DSN) for congenital toxoplasmosis (CT) in Greece, in order to assess the birth prevalence of CT. METHODS: A DSN of thirty clinicians was established for reporting CT cases from hospitals throughout Greece. The clinicians were selected on the basis that there was a high possibility the suspected cases would be referred to them from

Slow advancement of enteral feed volumes to prevent necrotising enterocolitis in very low birth weight infants.

BACKGROUND: Early enteral feeding practices are potentially modifiable risk factors for necrotising enterocolitis in very preterm or very low birth weight (VLBW) infants. Observational studies suggest that conservative feeding regimens that include slowly advancing enteral feed volumes reduce the risk of necrotising enterocolitis. However, slow feed advancement may delay establishment of full enteral feeding and be associated with metabolic and infectious morbidities secondary to prolonged exposure to parenteral nutrition. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of slow rates of enteral feed adva

Fetal large tubular oesophageal duplication cyst: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Oesophageal duplication cyst (EDC) is a rare congenital anomaly representing, after neuronal tumours, the second most common cause of posterior mass in children, with a prevalence of approximately 1/22,500 live births. Cervical cysts are very rare, and their antenatal detection is fairly uncommon. METHODS: We report the case of an isolated large mediastinal and cervical tubular EDC diagnosed prenatally in the third trimester. RESULTS: After birth, the baby became symptomatic developing respiratory distress due to the enlargement of the cyst and she underwent excision of the mas

An expanded view of infertility: The challenge of the changing profiling of major birth defects in China.

Over the past two decades, China has experienced a significant decline in birth rates, accompanied by a decrease in fertility and changes in major congenital defects. The development of assisted reproductive technology (ART) has brought hope to individuals facing infertility. However, some issues related to reproductive health and congenital defects have arisen. The reasons for the changing profiling of birth defects and the relationship between the decline in fertility and ART need to be further investigated. Lifestyle factors such as nutritional supplementation need to be altered to protect …

Congenital cardiac disease in the newborn infant: past, present, and future.

Congenital heart defects are the most common of all congenital malformations, with a review of the literature reporting the incidence at 6 to 8 per 1000 live births. The Centers for Disease Control reports cyanotic heart defects occurred in 56.9 per 100,000 live births in the United States in 2005, with higher rates noted when maternal age exceeded 40 years. The incidence of congenital heart disease in premature infants is 12.5 per 1000 live births, excluding isolated patent ductus arteriosus and atrial septal defect. Despite advances in detection and treatment, congenital heart disease accoun
