Arthroscopic anterior labral reconstruction using a transglenoid suture technique. Results in active-duty military patients.

We report the clinical outcome of arthroscopic labral reconstruction using a transglenoid suture technique in a young, active-duty military population. Forty-eight patients (49 shoulders) with varying degrees of glenohumeral instability underwent arthroscopic labral reconstruction using a transglenoid suture technique. All patients had traumatic injuries to their shoulders and all patients had magnetic resonance imaging scans demonstrating anterior labral tears. Postoperatively, the patients' shoulders were immobilized for up to 6 weeks. At a mean followup of 30 months (range, 12 to 49), 17 of

Prospective Comparative Study of Functional Outcomes of Distal Extra-articular Tibia Fracture Fixed With Intramedullary Nailing Versus Locking Compression Plating.

Introduction Distal tibial fractures are prevalent long bone injuries that pose difficulties owing to insufficient soft tissue coverage and their closeness to the ankle joint. The selection of the fixing method continues to be contentious, especially for extra-articular fractures. This study sought to investigate extra-articular distal tibial fractures, compare intramedullary nailing (IMN) with minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO), evaluate their clinical, radiological, and functional outcomes, and identify the problems linked to each procedure. Methodology This prospective comparati

Comparison of a New Minimally Invasive Reduction Technique Using Open Wiring in the Treatment of Subtrochanteric Femur Fractures.

OBJECTIVE: Minimally invasive reduction and intramedullary nailing (IMN) are the most common strategies used to treat subtrochanteric femur fractures (SFF). We report a new minimally invasive surgical technique for the successful reduction of SFF and maintenance of fragmental position after longitudinal traction. This study compared the radiological and clinical effects of these two reduction techniques when using IMN to treat SFF. METHODS: All 43 patients who underwent SFF at our hospital were included in this retrospective study. Twenty-two patients were treated using the conservative metho

Proximal Humerus Fractures: A Review of Anatomy, Classification, Management Strategies, and Complications.

Proximal humerus fractures are prevalent in older adults, particularly women, primarily due to osteoporosis and increased fall risk. These fractures often result from low-energy falls in elderly patients, while in younger individuals, they are more likely to occur with high-energy trauma, which may involve additional injuries to soft tissue and neurovascular structures. Proper anatomical understanding, including key structures and blood supply, is crucial for effective management and to prevent complications. Several classification systems assist in guiding treatment for proximal humerus fract

Feasibility and safety of dose-dense docetaxel after conventional epirubicin and cyclophosphamide as adjuvant treatment for early breast cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Although dose-dense chemotherapy may reduce breast cancer recurrence and death, phase II studies show that dose-dense docetaxel is poorly tolerated following administration of dose-dense anthracycline-based chemotherapy mainly because of cutaneous toxicity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This pilot study was designed to explore feasibility and safety of dose-dense docetaxel after conventional anthracycline-based therapy. Treatment consisted of sequential administration of 4 cycles of 3-weekly epirubicin (90 mg/m(2)) plus cyclophosphamide (600 mg/m(2)), followed by 4 cycles of bi-weekly doc

Replacement arthroplasty versus internal fixation for extracapsular hip fractures in adults.

BACKGROUND: Internal fixation, commonly used for extracapsular hip fractures, may fail particularly in unstable fractures. Replacement of the hip using arthroplasty, often used for intracapsular fractures, has been used as an alternative. OBJECTIVES: To compare replacement arthroplasty with internal fixation for the treatment of extracapsular hip fractures in adults. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Bone, Joint and Muscle Trauma Group Specialised Register (December 2005), the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (The Cochrane Library Issue 4, 2005), MEDLINE, EMBASE, the UK

A Prospective Comparative Study of the Outcome of Diaphyseal Humeral Shaft Fractures with Anterior BridgePlating versus Open Reduction Internal Fixation by Dynamic Compression Plating.

INTRODUCTION: Plate osteosynthesis has traditionally been the preferred treatment for humeral shaft fractures requiring surgical intervention. However, plating involves an open approach, necessitating careful and meticulous handling of soft tissue. As a result, the anterior bridge plating (ABP) as minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) is emerging as a promising technique for managing humeral shaft fractures. We performed an analysis on both groups (40 patients each), and our primary objectives compared were radiological outcome, functional outcome using UCLA shoulder score Mayo elbow s

Management and Outcomes of Femur Fractures in Patients with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

UNLABELLED: Background: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe, progressive X-linked recessive neuromuscular disorder characterized by muscle weakness and atrophy. Additionally, patients with DMD have significant reductions in bone mineral density compared to age-matched controls, which is exacerbated by concomitant steroid use. These findings dramatically increase fracture risk, which may irreparably decrease functional status. The aim of this case series is to examine outcomes of operative versus nonoperative management of femur fractures in this patient population. Methods: An IRB-app

Three-dimensional CT Improves the Reproducibility of Stability Evaluation for Intertrochanteric Fractures.

OBJECTIVES: Femoral intertrochanteric fractures are among the most common fractures in the elderly. There are various classification systems in intertrochanteric fractures. The aim of these classification systems is to help surgeons choose an appropriate treatment. The treatment of femoral intertrochanteric fractures depends on the results of a stability evaluation using imaging studies. However, it is difficult to evaluate the true fracture line using plain X-ray films, especially on the sagittal plane and for intertrochanteric fractures with complex morphologies. The aim of the current study

Distal Femur Locking Plate: The Answer to All Distal Femoral Fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Good results have been published by researchers with distal femur nail, dynamic condylar screw and even addition of a medial plate to a distal femur locking plate for treating distal femur fractures. By this study, we explore the capability of a distal femur locking plate to counter distal femur fractures of extra- articular, partial or intra- articular nature. Positive results have been published by various groups from all over the world. AIM: To study the functional and radiological outcome of distal femoral fractures in skeletally mature patients treated by open reduction and

[Pseudarthrosis following surgically treated forearm fractures in children and adolescents].

AIM: Due to the changing attitude of treating paediatric forearm fractures increasingly towards the surgical stabilisation rather than conservatively by the method of elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN), we are confronted with complications which have not been described in childhood previously. Pseudarthrosis following surgically treated forearm fractures in children is only found in single reports with none in the German-speaking area. The goal of this study is to define predisposing factors which may lead to pseudarthrosis after surgery for forearm fractures. METHOD: From 1990 to 2

Sarcoidosis presenting as nail dystrophy.

A 45-year-old woman was referred to the dermatology clinic for assessment of "refractory onychogryphosis." She had a 3-year history of lesions involving distal phalanges of the first and third of her left foot. Initially she described periungual erythema and swelling. Three weeks later she noted a whitish growth and thickening of her third toenail. X-ray films of the digit were reported as normal. Several months later the same changes occurred in her great toe. These lesions were asymptomatic. There was no history of trauma. Numerous fungal cultures were negative. No light microscopic examinat
