A 28-year-old woman with anorexia nervosa (AN) and Candida brain abscesses was transferred to our hospital for intensive treatment. On admission, she had a low-grade fever but no clinical neurological abnormalities were observed, even though she had a high-grade fever in the previous hospital. These clinical findings did not suggest a serious disorder in the brain. However, magnetic resonance imaging showed mass lesions in bilateral lentiform nuclei in addition to several abscesses in the whole body. The fungal cultures of specimens from abscesses on the anterior chest wall and iliopsoas muscl

Candida auris is an emerging human fungal pathogen that is being increasingly linked to outbreaks. It is concerning to health care workers because of its high mortality rate, due primarily to its antifungal resistance. Among the tools being developed to study this yeast are large cohorts of regional isolates, which can be useful for studying epidemiology, antifungal susceptibility patterns, and diagnostic methods. In this issue of the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, Y. Zhu, B. O'Brien, L. Leach, A. Clarke, et al. (J Clin Microbiol 58:e01503-19, 2020, https://doi.org/10.1128/JCM.01503-19) des

BACKGROUND: Candida auris is a novel Candida species, and has emerged globally as a multidrug-resistant health care-associated fungal pathogen. YouTube™ (http://www.youtube.com) as the largest free video-sharing website is increasingly used to search health information. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the content, reliability and quality of YouTube™ videos regarding Candida auris infection, and to identify whether it is a useful resource for people.
METHODS: The YouTube™ was used to search systematically for videos using the keywords: "Candida auris infection" and "Candida auris".

Candida auris presents a unique challenge to practitioners and infection control teams worldwide because of its virulence, alarming resistance profile, environmental fitness, and risk of nosocomial transmission. We describe 2 cases of Candida auris infection managed with the CDC recommendations with no evidence of in-hospital transmission.

Retrospective descriptive study carried out to determine the characteristics of fungemia in 285 cancer patients hospitalized from 2012 to 2016 at the Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplásicas (INEN). Demographic, clinical and microbiological information was evaluated. Fungemia by C. albicans predominated in patients with solid tumors and without neutropenia, while those caused by C. tropicalis predominated in patients with hematological neoplasia and neutropenia. C. tropicalis was the agent isolated in most cases (47.0%). Fungemia increased over time in patients without neutropenia. Funge

Successful human colonizers such as Candida pathogens have evolved distinct strategies to survive and proliferate within the human host. These include sophisticated mechanisms to evade immune surveillance and adapt to constantly changing host microenvironments where nutrient limitation, pH fluctuations, oxygen deprivation, changes in temperature, or exposure to oxidative, nitrosative, and cationic stresses may occur. Here, we review the current knowledge and recent findings highlighting the remarkable ability of medically important Candida species to overcome a broad range of host-imposed cons

Recently, the incidence of invasive fungal infections has significantly increased. Candida albicans (C. albicans) is the most common opportunistic fungal pathogen that infects humans. The limited number of available antifungal agents and the emergence of drug resistance pose difficulties to treatment, thus new antifungals are urgently needed. Through their functions in DNA replication, DNA repair and transcription, histone acetyltransferases (HATs) and histone deacetylases (HDACs) perform essential functions relating to growth, virulence, drug resistance and stress responses of C. albicans. The incidence of infections by uncommon Candida species has increased in recent years, however, in vitro susceptibility data are scarce. Here we assess the susceptibility of C. krusei, C. dubliniensis, C. lusitaniae, and C. guilliermondii complex isolates (n = 120) to antifungal agents by the EUCAST methodology. C. dubliniensis proved to be the most susceptible species, similar to that of C. albicans (P < .05), whereas C. guilliermondii was the least susceptible. Two C. krusei isolates were echinocandin-resistant and harbored a point mutation (L701M) in the FKS1. Some isolates were either fluc

OBJECTIVE: To dynamically monitor oral Candida infection, CD4+ T lymphocyte counts, CD8+ T lymphocyte counts and CD4/CD8 ratios in HIV/AIDS patients during their first year of HAART and to preliminarily explore the relationships between them.
DESIGN: Forty-six patients with HIV/AIDS receiving HAART at the Infection Department of Chongqing Red Cross Hospital were followed for one year. At baseline and 3, 6, and 12 months after HAART initiation, oral rinses were collected and cultured to identify Candida species. Further, blood samples were collected to detect CD4+ T lymphocyte counts, CD8+ T l

The emerging yeast Candida auris can be highly drug resistant, causing invasive infections, and large outbreaks. C. auris went from an unknown pathogen a decade ago to being reported in over thirty countries on six continents. C. auris consists of four discrete clades, based on where the first isolates of the clade were reported, South Asian (clade I), East Asian (clade II), African (clade III), and South American (clade IV). These clades have unique genetic and biochemical characteristics that are important to understand and inform the global response to C. auris Clade II has been underrepres

Candida albicans, a major human fungal pathogen, can cause a wide variety of both mucosal and systemic infections, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. Multiple lines of evidence suggest a strong association between virulence and the ability of C. albicans to undergo a reversible morphological transition from yeast to filamentous cells in response to host environmental cues. Most previous studies on mechanisms important for controlling the C. albicans morphological transition have focused on signaling pathways and sequence-specific transcription factors. However, in recent years a va

Candida albicans is an important opportunistic pathogenic fungus in the human body. It is a common microbe inhabiting on the mucosa surfaces of healthy individuals, but may cause infections when the host immune system is weak. Autophagy is a "self-eating" process in eukaryotes, which can recover and utilize damaged organelles and misfolded proteins. Here we investigated the role of the autophagy-related protein Atg11 in C. albicans. Deletion of ATG11 led to the defect in growth under the nitrogen starvation condition. Western blotting and GFP localization further revealed that the transport an

Candidalysin is a cytolytic peptide toxin secreted by the invasive form of the human pathogenic fungus, Candida albicans. Candidalysin is critical for mucosal and systemic infections and is a key driver of host cell activation, neutrophil recruitment and Type 17 immunity. Candidalysin is regarded as the first true classical virulence factor of C. albicans but also triggers protective immune responses. This review will discuss how candidalysin was discovered, the mechanisms by which this peptide toxin contributes to C. albicans infections, and how its discovery has advanced our understanding of

The presence of fungal infections continue to grow worldwide, mostly in immunosuppressed patients, and in individuals with continued antimicrobial treatments. Candida spp. are the most common yeasts involved in these disorders, being associated with a high rate of antifungal resistance and an increased ability to form biofilms, which make the treatment of these infections difficult. This review aims to present and discuss the main biofilm-related infections cause by several Candida spp. and novel therapies that are currently available in the clinical, scientific and academic environment. In the present study evaluation of structural, thermal and antifungal properties of Amaranthus hypochondriacus laboratory protein isolate (ALMA) and commercially available Amaranthus protein dietary antidepressant (APGM) was done by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and fluorescence spectroscopy and antibiofilm activities against Candida albicans. The results exhibited thermal stability and antioxidant activity for the isolates. Fluorescence measurements showed that they bind to human serum albumin through a static quenching mechanism, decreasing its fl
