Discovery of potentially novel species of the Onchocercidae (Nematoda: Filarioidea) in Burmese fighting chickens (Gallus gallus): Genetic insights into avian filariasis and co-infection with Plasmodium juxtanucleare.

Burmese fighting chickens (Gallus gallus) raised in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, eastern Thailand, were investigated for filarioids and co-infection with other haemoparasites. Microscopy and molecular diagnostic targeting the cox1 gene revealed that 2 out of 12 chickens tested positive for onchocercid filarioids. One chicken carried a single infection (Onchocercidae sp. CH09), characterized by unsheathed microfilariae with a cross-striated cuticle, a blunt anterior end, a short cephalic space, and a hook-like tail tip. Another chicken exhibited a mixed filarioid infection, necessitating the sub…

A microencapsulated feed additive containing organic acids and botanicals has a distinct effect on proliferative and metabolic related signaling in the jejunum and ileum of broiler chickens.

Well designed and formulated natural feed additives have the potential to provide many of the growth promoting and disease mitigating characteristics of in-feed antibiotics, particularly feed additives that elicit their effects on targeted areas of the gut. Here, we describe the mechanism of action of a microencapsulated feed additive containing organic acids and botanicals (AviPlus®P) on the jejunum and ileum of 15-day-old broiler-type chickens. Day-of-hatch chicks were provided ad libitum access to feed containing either 0 or 500 g/MT of the feed additive for the duration of the study. Fifte…

The influence of substituting dietary peptide-bound with free amino acids on nitrogen metabolism and acid-base balance of broiler chickens depends on asparagine and glutamine supply.

Reducing dietary crude protein (CP) concentration while maintaining adequate amino acid (AA) supply by free AA inclusion can contribute to attenuate the negative environmental effects of animal farming. This study investigated upper limits of dietary free AA inclusions without undesirable effects including the dependence on asparagine (Asn) and glutamine (Gln) supply. Ten broilers were allocated to sixty-three metabolism units each and offered nine experimental diets from day (d) 7-21 (n 7). One diet (167 g CP/kg) contained 80 g soya protein isolate (SPI)/kg. In the other diets, 25, 50, 75 and

Protection of laying chickens against the Canadian DMV/1639 infectious bronchitis virus infection through priming with heterologous live vaccine and boosting with heterologous or homologous inactivated vaccine.

The emergence of the Canadian Delmarva (DMV)/1639 infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) type strains was associated with egg production disorders in Eastern Canadian layer operations. While developing vaccines for novel IBV variants is not typically a reasonable approach, the consideration of an autogenous vaccine becomes more appealing, particularly when the new variant presents significant economic challenges. The current study aimed to compare the efficacies of two vaccination programs that included heterologous live priming by Massachusetts (Mass) and Connecticut (Conn) type vaccines followed
