Velo-cardio-facial phenotype and deletion of 22q11.2 in Hungarian children.

Velo-cardio-facial syndrome is a developmental disorder characterized by heart defects, specific facial features, cleft palate and learning disability. Most patients have a 3-Mb deletion in chromosomal region 22q11.2. This microdeletion has also been found in patients with isolated conotruncal malformations. Although no significant ethnic variability has been reported in the frequency 22q11.2 deletions, some recent studies question the high frequency of this as the underlying cause of velo-cardio-facial syndrome in Anglo-American populations. A screening program was initiated, including a deta

Off-road recreational motor vehicle accidents: hospitalization and deaths.

There is increasing concern over the unregulated use of recreational off-road motor vehicles. A review of 207 patients admitted to a tertiary care hospital over a 5-year period, as well as deaths due to use of recreational vehicles, elicited the following information. Recreational accidents predominantly involved men in their mid-twenties. Children younger than 16 years were more frequently involved in all-terrain vehicle (ATV) or dirt-bike accidents and constituted more than one-third of the total. There was a ninefold increase in ATV accidents over the study period, so that by 1985 ATVs were

Comparison of various WISC-R summary scores for a psychiatric sample.

Compared two sets of summary scores for the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R). The traditional scores used to summarize information about WISC-R performance (i.e., Verbal IQ (VIQ), Performance IQ (PIQ) and discrepancy between VIQ and PIQ) were compared to scores based on the three factors identified by Kaufman (1975) (i.e., Verbal Comprehension (VC), Perceptual Organization (PO) and Freedom from Distractibility (FD). Ss were 260 psychiatric outpatients who were administered the WISC-R during a 4-year period. The independent variables were sex and DSM II diagnosis. There

The burden and trends of road injuries in Afghanistan (1990-2021): A joinpoint analysis of data from the global burden of diseases, 2021 study.

OBJECTIVE: Road injuries pose a major public health challenge, particularly in low-income, conflict-affected regions like Afghanistan. Despite issues like poor infrastructure and weak traffic regulations, no national study has assessed the road injury burden. This study examines Afghanistan's road injury burden from 1990 to 2021. METHOD: This epidemiological study utilized the global burden of diseases (GBD) 2021 data. Key metrics included age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR), age-standardized disability-adjusted life-years rate (ASDR), years of life lost (YLL), and years lived with disabil

Experiences and perceived health benefits of individuals with a disability participating in sport: A systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Sports participation has many physical and mental health benefits for individuals with a disability, including improved functionality and reduced anxiety. Despite this, a large proportion of individuals with a disability are inactive. This review will be the first to synthesise the literature on the experiences and perceived health benefits of sport participation for children, adolescents, adults, elite athletes and veterans with a disability. Investigation of these phenomena will enable an understanding of the positive aspects and benefits of sport participation specific to each

Pediatric Headache and Sleep Disturbance: A Comparison of Diagnostic Groups.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether sleep disturbance differs by headache diagnosis in a pediatric sample, and whether this effect remains when other factors affecting sleep are included. BACKGROUND: Primary headache disorders can be severe and disabling, impacting a child's functioning and quality of life. Many children and adolescents with chronic headaches also experience sleep difficulties, and there is likely a bidirectional relationship between headaches and sleep difficulties. Sleep problems may intensify functional and developmental difficulties in youth with chronic headaches. Despite this

Neonatal hypoxia impairs serotonin release and cognitive functions in adult mice.

Children who experienced moderate perinatal asphyxia (MPA) are at risk of developing long lasting subtle cognitive and behavioral deficits, including learning disabilities and emotional problems. The prefrontal cortex (PFC) regulates cognitive flexibility and emotional behavior. Neurons that release serotonin (5-HT) project to the PFC, and compounds modulating 5-HT activity influence emotion and cognition. Whether 5-HT dysregulations contribute to MPA-induced cognitive problems is unknown. We established a MPA mouse model, which displays recognition and spatial memory impairments and dysfuncti

Histological and immunohistochemical study of brain damage in traumatic brain injuries in children, depending on the survival period.

Numerous studies showed that, at present, traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the main causes of death in young adults, but also a main cause of disabilities at all ages. For these reasons, TBI are continuously investigated. In our study, we evaluated the histopathological (HP) and immunohistochemical (IHC) changes that occurred in the brain in underage patients after a severe TBI depending on the survival period. We histopathologically and immunohistochemically analyzed a number of 22 cases of children, deceased in Dolj County, Romania, following some severe TBI, undergoing autopsy within

Citing conduct, individualizing symptoms: Accomplishing autism diagnosis in clinical case conferences.

In this paper, I examine how clinicians at a clinic for developmental disabilities in the United States determine whether children being evaluated for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) showed symptoms of that condition. Drawing on a convenience sample of 61 audio and video recorded case conferences from two time periods (1985 and 2011-15), and combining Conversation Analysis with insights from Actor Network Theory, I find that clinicians describe (via a representational practice called "citation") children's conduct in ways that advance diagnostic claims. More specifically, they portray key actan

Generalized joint hypermobility, joint hypermobility syndrome and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, hypermobility type.

This issue of the American Journal of Medical Genetics Seminar Series Part C is dedicated to generalized joint hypermobility (gJHM), joint hypermobility syndrome (JHS), and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, hypermobility type (EDS-HT). gJHM is the best known clinical manifestation of inherited defects of the connective tissue. On the other side, JHS and EDS-HT are actually considered one and the same from a clinical perspective by most practitioners and researchers (i.e., JHS/EDS-HT), and their molecular basis remains unknown. For decades, "non-syndromic" gJHM and JHS/EDS-HT have been thought to be simp

A narrative review of multidisciplinary rehabilitation in juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a chronic condition affecting children, marked by persistent joint inflammation driven by innate and adaptive immune responses involving macrophages and T and B lymphocytes. These responses promote tissue damage and inflammation via elevated pro-inflammatory cytokines, while anti-inflammatory cytokines are also present, but without a clear linear relationship. JIA can result in long-term physical disabilities, making a multidisciplinary rehabilitation approach essential to enhance patients' quality of life. This approach includes a collaborative team addr

"Calculating faces": can face perception paradigms enrich dyscalculia research?

Developmental dyscalculia (DD) is a subtype of learning disabilities, which is characterized by lower mathematical skills despite average intelligence and average or satisfactory performance in other academic areas. It is not fully understood how such deficits emerge in the course of brain development. When considering the mechanisms of dyscalculia, two domain-specific systems are distinguished. The Approximate Number System (ANS) is related to the approximate estimation of large sets, and the Object Tracking System (OTS) is responsible for subitizing, that is, the exact quantification of smal

Multifactorial pathways in burn injury-induced chronic pain: novel targets and their pharmacological modulation.

Burn injuries are among the highly prevalent medical conditions worldwide that occur mainly in children, military veterans and victims of fire accidents. It is one of the leading causes of temporary as well as permanent disabilities in patients. Burn injuries are accompanied by pain that persists even after recovery from tissue damage which puts immense pressure on the healthcare system. The pathophysiology of burn pain is poorly understood due to its complex nature and lack of considerable preclinical and clinical shreds of evidence, that creates a substantial barrier to the development of ne

[The neurobiological foundations of learning disabilities].

INTRODUCTION: Learning disabilities constitute a heterogeneous group of disorders that involve significant alterations in different cognitive domains (acquisition and use of language, reasoning, mathematical skills, visuospatial abilities, and so forth) that are not accounted for by a low level of intelligence, inadequate sociocultural development or lack of academic opportunities. They result from an alteration in basic psychological processes, developmentally linked to an alteration in the central nervous system. Current functional neuroimaging techniques have made it possible to develop a n

Diverging trends in neurodevelopmental disorder diagnoses among children aged below 16 years in Kazakhstan (2014-2024): a national registry study.

INTRODUCTION: Neurodevelopmental disorders are increasingly straining health systems. However, how these disorders are distributed across populations, or whether their occurrence is increasing, is still not fully understood. This study examined registry-based prevalence, temporal trends, geographic variation, and associated systemic factors in a Central Asian setting. METHODS: We analysed national electronic health-registry data from Kazakhstan for children aged ≤15 years from 2014 to 2024 using a repeated cross-sectional design. The register is a prevalent "on-the-register" stock registry, a

Posterior urethral valves and the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in two FINNISH cohorts.

BACKGROUND: The Posterior Urethral Valve (PUV) is a persistent membrane of the urethra, which causes obstruction in the urogenital tract in boys. To our knowledge, no comprehensive reports have been published on whether PUV is associated to neurodevelopmental disorders. Here, we analyzed a cohort of PUV patients for neurodevelopmental disorders and verified findings in an older cohort. METHODS: In a register based study, we reviewed the hospital registries for patients treated for PUV during 1992-2013 to identify those with neurodevelopmental disorders. Primary outcome measure was any neurode
